Abstract

A firearm or a firearm retrofit assembly to provide the firearm with gas compensation to reduce recoil, wherein a barrel of the firearm or firearm retrofit assembly includes a length having an egress for gas propelled from a chamber inside the barrel, the firearm or a firearm retrofit assembly includes a compensation device to mount in front or behind a front wall of a slide associated with the barrel, the compensation device including: a first side having an opening arranged to fit around a length of the barrel; and a second different side having an opening to expose the egress of the length of the bore.

Claims (30)

1. An apparatus, comprising

a slide operable with a barrel that includes 1) a muzzle and 2) at least one egress in a length of the barrel, the slide to fit around part of the length of the barrel and receive gas expelled from the at least one egress in the length of the barrel;

wherein the slide includes:

one or more cavities to receive and redirect the gas; and

a wall having a front defining part of a rear of a cavity, of the one or more cavities, that is closest to a barrel end opposite the muzzle when the slide is fit around the barrel, wherein the wall extends from an underside of the slide, the wall having a thickness that is less than a depth of the cavity, wherein the thickness is measured along a longitudinal axis that is parallel with a bore axis of the barrel.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the front of the wall is coplanar with a rear of the at least one egress in the length of the barrel.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein part of the at least one egress in the length of the barrel is located below a centerline of the barrel.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the front of the wall includes a face, and wherein the face has a slope that is steeper than slopes of sides of the cavity.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the front of the wall has a face and the rear of the cavity has a face, and wherein the faces comprise parallel faces.

6. An apparatus, comprising

a slide operable with a barrel that includes 1) a muzzle and 2) at least one egress in a length of the barrel, the slide to fit around part of the length of the barrel and receive gas expelled from the at least one egress in the length of the barrel;

wherein the slide includes:

one or more cavities to receive and redirect the gas; and

a wall having a front face and a back face, wherein the front face of the wall defines part of a rear of a cavity, of the one or more cavities, that is closest to a barrel end opposite the muzzle when the slide is fit around the barrel, wherein the wall extends from an underside of the slide, the wall having a thickness from the front face toward the barrel end opposite the muzzle to the back face of the wall that is less than a depth of the cavity from an external surface of the slide to an internal surface of the slide.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the front face of the wall is coplanar with a rear of the at least one egress in the length of the barrel.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein part of the at least one egress in the length of the barrel is located below a centerline of the barrel.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the faces comprise parallel faces.

10. An apparatus, comprising

a barrel that includes 1) a muzzle and 2) an egress in a length of the barrel;

a compensation system operable with the barrel, the compensation system to fit around the barrel and receive gas expelled from the egress;

wherein the compensation system is arranged to move slidingly with respect to the barrel, when fit around the barrel, and wherein the compensation system includes:

a cavity to receive and redirect the gas expelled from the egress; and

a wall having a front and a back, wherein the back of the wall is not part of any gas port surfaces of the compensation system and the front of the wall is a part of a gas port surface of the gas port surfaces;

the wall having a thickness from at least part of the back of the wall to a corresponding part of said front of the wall, wherein the thickness is less than a length associated with the cavity and the egress;

the length being a straight line along a plane that is perpendicular to a bore axis of the barrel, the straight line starting at any edge of the cavity at an exterior of the compensation system and ending at an edge of the egress at an interior of the barrel on a same side of the bore axis.

11. A firearm comprising the compensation system of claim 10 .

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the front of the wall is coplanar with part of a rear of the egress in the length of the barrel.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein part of the egress in the length of the barrel is located below a centerline of the barrel.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the front of the wall includes a face, and wherein the face has a slope that is steeper than slopes of sides of the cavity.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the front of the wall has a face and the rear of the cavity has a face, and wherein the faces comprises parallel faces.
