Abstract

A manufacturing system for assembling a vehicle includes a structure having a plurality of levels and including a plurality of manufacturing cells distributed among the plurality of levels. The manufacturing system includes a plurality of manufacturing capsules disposable at the plurality of manufacturing cells and configured to support a vehicular manufacturing process to assemble the vehicle, where the vehicular manufacturing process includes a plurality of manufacturing operations. The manufacturing system includes a transport system configured to move the plurality of manufacturing capsules to the plurality of manufacturing cells, where the transport system includes a vertical transport system configured to longitudinally move the plurality of manufacturing capsules between the plurality of levels. The manufacturing system includes a control system configured to control movement of the manufacturing capsules with the transport system.

Claims (31)

1. A manufacturing system for assembling a vehicle, the system comprising:

a structure having a plurality of levels and including a plurality of manufacturing cells distributed among the plurality of levels;

a plurality of manufacturing capsules disposable at the plurality of manufacturing cells and configured to support a vehicular manufacturing process to assemble the vehicle, wherein the vehicular manufacturing process includes a plurality of manufacturing operations;

a transport system configured to move the plurality of manufacturing capsules to the plurality of manufacturing cells, wherein the transport system includes a vertical transport system configured to longitudinally move the plurality of manufacturing capsules between the plurality of levels; and

a control system configured to control movement of the manufacturing capsules with the transport system.

2. The manufacturing system of claim 1 , wherein the transport system includes a horizontal transport system for transversely moving the manufacturing capsules at a given level from among the plurality of levels.

3. The manufacturing system of claim 2 , wherein:

the transport system includes a plurality of transition nodes;

the vertical transport system and the horizontal transport system are connected at the plurality of transition nodes; and

the plurality of manufacturing capsules are configured to move between the vertical transport system and the horizontal transport system at the plurality of transition nodes.

4. The manufacturing system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of manufacturing capsules further comprise a plurality of workpiece capsules that include a workpiece and one or more automated tools for performing one or more manufacturing operations from among a plurality of manufacturing operations.

5. The manufacturing system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of manufacturing capsules further comprise a plurality of supply capsules configured to transport manufacturing materials to the plurality of manufacturing cells.

6. The manufacturing system of claim 5 , wherein the transport system further includes a supply vertical transport system operable to transport the plurality of supply capsules to the plurality of manufacturing cells.

7. The manufacturing system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of manufacturing capsules further comprise a plurality of inspection capsules that include an inspection system configured to perform an inspection operation.

8. The manufacturing system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to control the movement of the manufacturing capsules based on vehicle assembly sequence instructions.

9. The manufacturing system of claim 8 , wherein the vehicle assembly sequence instructions define the plurality of manufacturing operations of the vehicular manufacturing process and one or more levels from among the plurality of levels for performing the plurality of manufacturing operations.

10. The manufacturing system of claim 9 , wherein the vehicle assembly sequence instructions identify a first manufacturing cell from among the one or more levels for performing a first manufacturing operation of the plurality of manufacturing operations.

11. The manufacturing system of claim 10 , wherein the vehicle assembly sequence instructions define a path between the first manufacturing cell and one or more additional manufacturing cells for performing additional manufacturing operations of the plurality of manufacturing operations.

12. The manufacturing system of claim 11 , wherein the path is based on a comparison between a cycle time of a given manufacturing operation from among the plurality of manufacturing operations to a threshold cycle time of the given manufacturing operation.

13. The manufacturing system of claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to control the movement of the manufacturing capsules based on a collision avoidance routine.

14. A manufacturing system for assembling a vehicle, the system comprising:

a structure having a plurality of levels and including a plurality of manufacturing cells distributed among the plurality of levels;

a plurality of manufacturing capsules disposable at the plurality of manufacturing cells and configured to support a vehicular manufacturing process to assemble the vehicle, wherein the vehicular manufacturing process includes a plurality of manufacturing operations, and wherein the plurality of manufacturing capsules comprise a workpiece capsule, a supply capsule, an inspection capsule, or a combination thereof;

a transport system configured to move the plurality of manufacturing capsules to the plurality of manufacturing cells, wherein the transport system includes a vertical transport system configured to longitudinally move the plurality of manufacturing capsules between the plurality of levels, and wherein the transport system includes a horizontal transport system for transversely moving the manufacturing capsules at a given level from among the plurality of levels; and

a control system configured to control movement of the manufacturing capsules with the transport system.

15. The manufacturing system of claim 14 , wherein the workpiece capsule includes a workpiece and one or more automated tools for performing one or more manufacturing operations from among a plurality of manufacturing operations.

16. The manufacturing system of claim 14 , wherein the supply capsule is configured to transport manufacturing materials to the plurality of manufacturing cells.

17. The manufacturing system of claim 16 , wherein the transport system further includes a supply vertical transport system operable to transport the supply capsule to the plurality of manufacturing cells.

18. The manufacturing system of claim 14 , wherein the inspection capsule includes an inspection system configured to perform an inspection operation.

19. The manufacturing system of claim 14 , wherein the control system is configured to control the movement of the manufacturing capsules based on vehicle assembly sequence instructions.

20. The manufacturing system of claim 14 , wherein the control system is configured to control the movement of the manufacturing capsules based on a collision avoidance routine.
