Abstract

A method for managing a storage includes applying, by a host, a first type of snapshot service to the LU of the storage, wherein the LU is identified by a logical unit number (LUN), in response to applying the first snapshot service, making a first determination that the LU is not visible to the host, wherein the host is operationally coupled to the storage and the first snapshot service continues to be applied to the LU, in response to the first determination, discontinuing applying the first type of snapshot service to the LU, and when the first snapshot service is no longer applied to the LU, applying, by the host, a second type of snapshot service to the LU.

Claims (56)

1. A method of managing a storage, the method comprising:

applying, by a host, a first type of snapshot service to the LU of the storage, wherein the LU is identified by a logical unit number (LUN);

in response to applying the first snapshot service, making a first determination that the LU is not visible to the host, wherein the host is operationally coupled to the storage and the first snapshot service continues to be applied to the LU;

in response to the first determination, discontinuing applying the first type of snapshot service to the LU; and

when the first snapshot service is no longer applied to the LU, applying, by the host, a second type of snapshot service to the LU.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to applying the second type of snapshot service to the LUN:

making a second determination that the LU is not visible to the host; and

in response to the second determination, initiating a repeated application of the second type of snapshot service to the LU.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

after initiating the repeated application of the second type of snapshot service to the LU:

making a third determination about whether the LU is visible to the host.

4. The method of claim 3 , halting the second type of snapshot service when the third determination is that the LU is visible to the host.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to the first determination, waiting a predetermined period of time prior to discontinuing applying the first type of snapshot service to the LU.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first type of snapshot service is a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS); and

the second type of snapshot service is a Virtual Disk Service (VDS).

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein discontinuing applying the first type of snapshot service to the LU because the LU number (LUN) of the LU, identifying a location of the LU in the storage, is not exposed on the host.

8. A system, comprising:

a processor; and

memory comprising instructions which, when executed by the processor, perform a method, the method comprising:

applying, by a host, a first type of snapshot service to the LU of the storage, wherein the LU is identified by a logical unit number (LUN);

in response to applying the first snapshot service, making a first determination that the LU is not visible to the host, wherein the host is operationally coupled to the storage and the first snapshot service continues to be applied to the LU;

in response to the first determination, discontinuing applying the first type of snapshot service to the LU; and

when the first snapshot service is no longer applied to the LU, applying, by the host, a second type of snapshot service to the LU.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

in response to applying the second type of snapshot service to the LUN:

making a second determination that the LU is not visible to the host; and

in response to the second determination, initiating a repeated application of the second type of snapshot service to the LU.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

after initiating the repeated application of the second type of snapshot service to the LU:

making a third determination about whether the LU is visible to the host.

11. The system of claim 10 , halting the second type of snapshot service when the third determination is that the LU is visible to the host.

12. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

in response to the first determination, waiting a predetermined period of time prior to discontinuing applying the first type of snapshot service to the LU.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first type of snapshot service is a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein second type of snapshot service is a Virtual Disk Service (VDS).

15. The system of claim 8 , wherein discontinuing applying the first type of snapshot service to the LU because the LU number (LUN) of the LU, identifying a location of the LU in the storage, is not exposed on the host.

16. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising computer readable program code, which when executed by a computer processor enables the computer processor to perform a method for managing a storage, the method comprising:

performing, by the session initiator and in parallel with an iterative process, a non-iterative process, comprising:

applying, by a host, a first type of snapshot service to the LU of the storage, wherein the LU is identified by a logical unit number (LUN);

in response to applying the first snapshot service, making a first determination that the LU is not visible to the host, wherein the host is operationally coupled to the storage and the first snapshot service continues to be applied to the LU;

in response to the first determination, discontinuing applying the first type of snapshot service to the LU; and

when the first snapshot service is no longer applied to the LU, applying, by the host, a second type of snapshot service to the LU.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , the method further comprising:

in response to applying the second type of snapshot service to the LUN:

making a second determination that the LU is not visible to the host; and

in response to the second determination, initiating a repeated application of the second type of snapshot service to the LU.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , the method further comprising:

after initiating the repeated application of the second type of snapshot service to the LU:

making a third determination about whether the LU is visible to the host.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18 , the method further comprising:

halting the second type of snapshot service when the third determination is that the LU is visible to the host.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , the method further comprising:

in response to the first determination, waiting a predetermined period of time prior to discontinuing applying the first type of snapshot service to the LU.
