Abstract

Disclosed herein are a system, method and/or computer readable storage embodiments for processing packets based on forwarding rules in a packet router of a network visibility system. In an embodiment, the packet router contains components for processing sets of packets via tags based on whitelist and forwarding rules in the packet router. The packet router may also distinguish between a general packet radio service (GPRS) tunneling protocol (GTP) packet and a non-GTP packet and may process GTP and non-GTP packets based on the whitelist and forwarding rules.

Claims (73)

1. A packet router, comprising:

an ingress card, comprising a first input port and a second input port, wherein the ingress card is configured to:

receive a first set of packets and a second set of packets from first and second networks, respectively, wherein the first set of packets is received via the first input port and the second set of packets is received via the second input port, wherein the first set of packets and the second set of packets comprise at least one of a general packet radio service (GPRS) tunneling protocol (GTP) packet and a non-GTP packet, wherein the first network implements a first communication standard and the second network implements a second communication standard, and wherein the first communication standard is different from the second communication standard; and

tag a packet in the first set of packets or the second set of packets to form a tagged GTP packet responsive to a determination that the packet is the GTP packet;

a whitelist card configured to:

receive the tagged GTP packet from the ingress card; and

forward the tagged GTP packet based on a whitelist rule;

a service card configured to:

receive the tagged GTP packet from the whitelist card; and

forward the tagged GTP packet based on a forwarding rule; and

an egress card configured to receive at least one of the non-GTP packet from the ingress card and the tagged GTP packet from the service card,

wherein the packet router is further configured to:

transmit, to a router controller, a status update of a component of the packet router, wherein the component comprises one of the ingress card, the whitelist card, the service card, and the egress card; and

receive, from the router controller, a reassignment of a second forwarding rule from the component of the packet router to another component of the packet router.

2. The packet router of claim 1 , wherein responsive to determining that the packet is the non-GTP packet, the ingress card is further configured to determine whether a match exists between the packet and an entry in a forwarding table for non-GTP traffic, wherein:

responsive to determining the match exists, the ingress card is configured to forward the non-GTP packet to an output port of the egress card; and

responsive to determining the match does not exist, the ingress card is configured to drop the packet or forward the packet to a learning port of the packet router.

3. The packet router of claim 2 , further comprising:

a plurality of ports including a control port, a service port, the learning port, and a mirror port, wherein at least one port of the plurality of ports is configured to communicate with the router controller.

4. The packet router of claim 3 , wherein the packet router is further configured to:

transmit, via the control port, control information to the router controller, wherein the control information includes at least one of the forwarding rule, a failure indication associated with the service card, and a removal indication associated with the service card.

5. The packet router of claim 3 , wherein the packet router is further configured to:

transmit, via the service port, a dynamic rule to the router controller, wherein the dynamic rule maps a tunnel endpoint to the output port of the egress card.

6. The packet router of claim 3 , wherein the tagged GTP packet is a general packet radio service control (GTP-C) packet, and wherein the packet router is further configured to:

duplicate, by the whitelist card, the tagged GTP packet to form a duplicated GTP-C packet; and

transmit, via the mirror port, the duplicated GTP-C packet to the router controller.

7. The packet router of claim 2 , wherein the forwarding table is a native Internet Protocol (IP) table that includes a destination IP address of a network element to which the non-GTP packet is to be forwarded.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein to forward the packet to the learning port of the packet router, the packet router is further configured to:

transmit the packet from the learning port of the packet router to a router controller; and

receive, from a router controller, an additional rule based on an IP address of the packet.

The packet router of claim 1 , wherein responsive to determining that the packet is the GTP packet, the ingress card is further configured to, responsive to determining a match exists between the packet and an entry in a zoning table, tag the packet with a zone virtual local area network (VLAN) identifier from the zoning table.

10. The packet router of claim 9 , wherein, to form the tagged GTP packet, the ingress card is configured to tag the tagged GTP packet with a service instance identifier.

11. The packet router of claim 9 , further comprising:

another whitelist card, wherein the whitelist card is configured to distribute the first set of packets and the second set of packets to the other whitelist card based on the whitelist rule.

The packet router of claim 11 , wherein the forwarding rule is used to distribute the first set of packets and the second set of packets between the whitelist card and the other whitelist card based on internet protocol (IP) addresses assigned to each of the whitelist card and the other whitelist card.

13. The packet router of claim 9 , wherein the ingress card is further configured to:

forward the tagged GTP packet to the whitelist card based on the zone VLAN identifier.

14. The packet router of claim 1 , wherein the whitelist card is configured to:

filter the tagged GTP packet according to the whitelist rule, wherein the whitelist rule specifies at least one condition for filtering packets received by the whitelist card.

15. The packet router of claim 1 , wherein the service card is further configured to:

host a service instance that is configured to process a subset of the first set of packets and the second set of packets; and

store a default table and a dynamic table, wherein the default table stores at least one entry for allocating the first set of packets and the second set of packets to an output port of the egress card and the dynamic table stores at least one dynamically generated entry for overriding the at least one entry.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the service card is further configured to:

host a first service instance for processing a first subset of GTP traffic received from the first network and the second network; and

host a second service instance for processing a second subset of GTP traffic received from the first network and the second network.

17. A method, comprising:

receiving, via a first input port of a packet router, a first set of packets from a first network;

receiving, via a second input port of the packet router, a second set of packets from a second network, wherein the first set of packets is received via the first input port and the second set of packets is received via the second input port, wherein the first network implements a first communication standard and the second network implements a second communication standard, and wherein the first communication standard is different from the second communication standard;

responsive to determining, by the packet router, that a packet in the first set of packets or the second set of packets comprises a general packet radio service (GPRS) tunneling protocol (GTP) packet:

adding a tag to the GTP packet to generate a tagged GTP packet based on the first input port or the second input port;

filtering the tagged GTP packet based on a whitelist rule;

forwarding the tagged GTP packet to an egress card in the packet router based on a forwarding rule;

responsive to determining, by the packet router, that the first set of packets or second set of packets comprises a non-GTP packet, forwarding the non-GTP packet to the egress card in the packet router;

transmitting, by the egress card, the non-GTP packet to an analytic server configured to process non-GTP traffic,

wherein the method further comprises:

transmitting, by the packet router to a router controller, a status update of a component of the packet router, wherein the component comprises one of the ingress card, the whitelist card, the service card, and the egress card; and

receiving, by the packet router from the router controller, a reassignment of a second forwarding rule from the component of the packet router to another component of the packet router.

18. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored thereon program code that, when executed by a packet router comprising a first input port and a second input port, causes the packet router to perform operations comprising:

receiving a first set of packets and a second set of packets from first and second networks, respectively, wherein the first set of packets is received via the first input port and the second set of packets is received via the second input port, wherein the first set of packets and the second set of packets comprise at least one of a general packet radio service (GPRS) tunneling protocol (GTP) packet and a non-GTP packet, wherein the first network implements a first communication standard and the second network implements a second communication standard, and wherein the first communication standard is different from the second communication standard;

determining whether the first set of packets and the second set of packets includes the GTP packet or the non-GTP packet;

responsive to determining that the first set of packets or the second set of packets includes the GTP packet:

tagging the GTP packet to generate a tagged GTP packet; and

forwarding, based on at least one of a whitelist rule and a forwarding rule, the tagged GTP packet from an ingress card to an egress card of the packet router;

responsive to determining that the first set of packets or the second set of packets includes the non-GTP packet, forwarding the non-GTP packet to the egress card of the packet router;

transmitting, by the egress card, the non-GTP packet to an analytic server configured to process non-GTP traffic,

wherein the operations further comprise:

transmitting, by the packet router to a router controller, a status update of a component of the packet router, wherein the component comprises one of the ingress card, the whitelist card, the service card, and the egress card; and

receive, by the packet router from the router controller, a reassignment of a second forwarding rule from the component of the packet router to another component of the packet router.

19. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein forwarding the non-GTP packet to the egress card comprises determining whether a match exists between the packet and an entry in a forwarding table for non-GTP traffic, and wherein,

responsive to determining that the match exists, forwarding the non-GTP packet to an output port of the egress card; and

responsive to determining the match does not exist, dropping the packet or forwarding the packet to a learning port of the packet router.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 18 , the operations further comprising:

transmitting, via a control port of the packet router, control information to a router controller, wherein the control information includes at least one of a forwarding rule, a failure indication, and a removal indication.
