Abstract

In one aspect, authentication information is received from a first processing device in a second processing device, and a digital signature is generated in the second processing device by signing data that incorporates at least a portion of the received authentication information. The received authentication information is generated at least in part from a secret seed stored in the first processing device. The received authentication information may be combined with the digital signature generated by the second processing device to form a joint signature that is transmitted to an authentication server. In an illustrative embodiment, the received authentication information comprises a tokencode and the digital signature is generated by signing data that incorporates the tokencode. The data that is signed to generate the digital signature may comprise an electronic document having the tokencode appended thereto.

Claims (46)

1. A method comprising the steps of:

generating authentication information in a first processing device;

receiving data to be signed from a second processing device;

generating a digital signature in the first processing device by signing the received data utilizing at least a portion of the authentication information;

wherein the step of generating the digital signature in the first processing device further comprises generating the digital signature only after the first processing device receives out-of-band verification of the data to be signed;

wherein receiving the data to be signed from the second processing device comprises:

selectively activating a radio of the first processing device to enable bidirectional communication between the first processing device and the second processing device; and

utilizing the activated radio of the first processing device to process one or more probe requests from the second processing device, the one or more probe requests comprising at least a portion of the data to be signed; and

wherein the out-of-band verification is based at least in part on capturing, utilizing a camera of the first processing device, an image of data displayed on a screen of the second processing device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the received data comprises an electronic document or a hash of an electronic document.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the out-of-band verification provides the first processing device with evidence that the data to be signed has one or more characteristics perceptible to a user that requested generation of the digital signature.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the out-of-band verification of the data to be signed comprises receiving a biometric sample from a user that requested generation of the digital signature.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the out-of-band verification comprises activation of a user interface feature of the first processing device.

6. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory processor-readable storage medium having stored therein program code of one or more software programs, wherein the program code when executed by a first processing device causes the first processing device:

to generate authentication information in the first processing device;

to receive data to be signed from a second processing device;

to generate a digital signature in the first processing device by signing the received data utilizing at least a portion of the authentication information;

wherein generating the digital signature in the first processing device further comprises generating the digital signature only after the first processing device receives out-of-band verification of the data to be signed;

wherein receiving the data to be signed from the second processing device comprises:

selectively activating a radio of the first processing device to enable bidirectional communication between the first processing device and the second processing device; and

utilizing the activated radio of the first processing device to process one or more probe requests from the second processing device, the one or more probe requests comprising at least a portion of the data to be signed; and

wherein the out-of-band verification is based at least in part on capturing, utilizing a camera of the first processing device, an image of data displayed on a screen of the second processing device.

7. An apparatus comprising:

a first processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory;

the first processing device being configured:

to generate authentication information in the first processing device;

to receive data to be signed from a second processing device;

to generate a digital signature in the first processing device by signing the received data utilizing at least a portion of the authentication information;

wherein generating the digital signature in the first processing device further comprises generating the digital signature only after the first processing device receives out-of-band verification of the data to be signed; and

wherein receiving the data to be signed from the second processing device comprises:

selectively activating a radio of the first processing device to enable bidirectional communication between the first processing device and the second processing device; and

utilizing the activated radio of the first processing device to process one or more probe requests from the second processing device, the one or more probe requests comprising at least a portion of the data to be signed; and

wherein the out-of-band verification is based at least in part on capturing, utilizing a camera of the first processing device, an image of data displayed on a screen of the second processing device.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the out-of-band verification comprises verification of geolocation of the first processing device relative to the second processing device.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the out-of-band verification comprises monitoring wireless communications between the second processing device and a display associated with the second processing device.

10. The computer program product of claim 6 wherein the received data comprises an electronic document or a hash of an electronic document.

11. The computer program product of claim 10 wherein the out-of-band verification provides the first processing device with evidence that the data to be signed has one or more characteristics perceptible to a user that requested generation of the digital signature.

12. The computer program product of claim 6 wherein the out-of-band verification of the data to be signed comprises receiving a biometric sample from a user that requested generation of the digital signature.

13. The computer program product of claim 6 wherein the out-of-band verification comprises activation of a user interface feature of the first processing device.

14. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the received data comprises an electronic document or a hash of an electronic document.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the out-of-band verification provides the first processing device with evidence that the data to be signed has one or more characteristics perceptible to a user that requested generation of the digital signature.

16. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the out-of-band verification of the data to be signed comprises receiving a biometric sample from a user that requested generation of the digital signature.

17. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the out-of-band verification comprises activation of a user interface feature of the first processing device.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the out-of-band verification comprises matching at least a portion of the received data to be signed with at least a portion of the data in the captured image.

19. The computer program product of claim 6 wherein the out-of-band verification comprises matching at least a portion of the received data to be signed with at least a portion of the data in the captured image.

20. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the out-of-band verification comprises matching at least a portion of the received data to be signed with at least a portion of the data in the captured image.
