Abstract

Disclosed are a system and method of regulating mobile device communications while operating a motor vehicle. One example method may include determining a speed event indicating that a speed of the motor vehicle has performed at least one of exceeded a first threshold above which mobile device usage restriction policies are invoked and fallen below a second threshold allowing the mobile device restriction policies to be removed. The first threshold may be equal to or greater than the second threshold. As a result of obtaining the speed event, the method may also provide transmitting the speed event to a remote edge gateway server located remotely from the motor vehicle, which stores the speed event for reference purposes when determining a policy for routing a particular mobile device call, text message and/or mobile data session.

Claims (46)

1. A method, comprising:

retrieving, via a remote server, at least one of a speed and a location from a Responsible Driver System Sensor (RDSS) device during vehicle operation;

wherein the RDSS device is one or more of interfaced with the vehicle via a communications port or hardwired into the vehicle;

wherein the RDSS device comprises at least a processor, a radio communications system, and a non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that when executed cause the processor to report speed and location of the vehicle via the radio communications system;

wherein the speed is determined from one or more of a Global Positioning System or a speedometer of the vehicle;

wherein the location is determined from one or more of the Global Positioning System or a mobile device associated with the vehicle;

determining, by the remote server, that the mobile device is located inside the vehicle based on the vehicle location and the mobile device location; and

applying, by the remote server, one or more policies to restrict one or more of calls, data messages and mobile data usage sent and received by the mobile device based on the mobile device location being located inside the vehicle.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifying the vehicle location comprises sending a request to a mobile location center of a carrier network managing the subscription.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein responsive to identifying the vehicle location, determining whether the mobile device is within a threshold distance of the RDSS device.

4. The method of claim 1 , comprising receiving a notification at the remote server from the RDSS device that the vehicle has been activated.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the identifying the vehicle location is performed responsive to receiving the notification the vehicle is activated.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the RDSS device is in communication with the remote server via a mobile data carrier network subscription service, and the communication comprises one or more data messages sent from the RDSS device.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprising

determining the vehicle speed has reached a threshold hysteresis speed; and

responsive to determining the vehicle speed has reached the threshold hysteresis speed, performing an additional vehicle location determination.

8. The method of claim 7 , comprising

determining whether the mobile device is a greater distance from the RDSS device than previously determined from the additional vehicle location determination.

9. The method of claim 1 , comprising

determining the vehicle has reached or exceeded a threshold speed; and

responsive to reaching or exceeding the threshold speed, invoking a restriction policy to apply to the mobile device.

10. The method of claim 9 , comprising

restricting one or more of calls, data messages and mobile data usage sent and received by the mobile device.

11. A system, comprising:

a Responsible Driver System Sensor (RDSS) device;

a vehicle;

a mobile device; and

a remote server configured to

retrieve at least one of a speed and a location from the RDSS device during vehicle operation;

wherein the RDSS device is one or more of interfaced with the vehicle via a communications port or hardwired into the vehicle;

wherein the RDSS device comprises at least a processor, a radio communications system, and a non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that when executed cause the processor to report speed and location of the vehicle via the radio communications system;

wherein the speed is determined from one or more of a Global Positioning System or a speedometer of the vehicle;

wherein the location is determined from one or more of the Global Positioning System or the mobile device associated with the vehicle;

determine that the mobile device is located inside the vehicle based on the vehicle location and a mobile device location; and

apply one or more policies to restrict one or more of calls, data messages and mobile data usage sent and received by the mobile device based on the mobile device location being located inside the vehicle.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the remote server identifies the vehicle location further comprises the remote server being configured to send a request to a mobile location center of a carrier network managing the subscription.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein responsive to the vehicle location being identified, the remote server is configured to determine whether the mobile device is within a threshold distance of the RDSS device.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the remote server is configured to receive a notification from the RDSS device that the vehicle has been activated.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the vehicle location identification is performed responsive to the notification being received that the vehicle is activated.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the RDSS device is in communication with the remote server via a mobile data carrier network subscription service, and the communication comprises one or more data messages sent from the RDSS device.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the remote server is configured to

determine the vehicle speed has reached a threshold hysteresis speed; and

responsive to the vehicle speed being determined to have reached the threshold hysteresis speed, perform an additional vehicle location determination.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the remote server determines whether the mobile device is a greater distance from the RDSS device, than previously determined, from the additional vehicle location determination.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the remote server further determines the vehicle has reached or exceeded a threshold speed, and responsive to the vehicle having reached or exceeded the threshold speed, the remote server invokes a restriction policy to apply to the mobile device.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the restriction policy restricts one or more of calls, data messages and mobile data usage sent and received by the mobile device.
