Abstract

In some embodiments, a spinal stabilization system may be formed in a patient using quick-connect sleeve assemblies. Each quick-connect sleeve assembly can be coupled to a bone fastener assembly in a fast and intuitive way. In one embodiment, a quick-connect sleeve assembly has a detachable member and a movable member. Both members engage a collar of the bone fastener assembly. In one embodiment, the engagement can be locked via one or more locking features to facilitate screwing a bone fastener of the bone fastener assembly onto a vertebral body in a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Each quick-connect sleeve assembly has a low profile and is particularly shaped for minimally invasive entry.

Claims (35)

1. A quick-connect sleeve assembly, comprising:

a detachable member having a cylindrical body, at least one channel contained within a sidewall of said cylindrical body, a second end being configured for coupling to a collar of a bone fastener assembly; and

a movable member having a head portion, a body portion, and at least one locking feature for latching onto said detachable member with a push motion, a twist motion, or a combination thereof;

wherein said at least one channel of said detachable member is configured to accommodate said body portion of said movable member;

wherein said second end of said detachable member is configured for coupling to the collar of the bone fastener assembly; and

wherein, in a first position associated with a first window, a distal end of said body portion of said movable member is not configured to engage said collar of said bone fastener assembly and, in a second position associated with a second window, the distal end of said body portion of said movable member is configured to engage said collar through said at least one channel of said detachable member to inhibit translational motion of said collar relative to said detachable member and wherein the at least one channel extends between the first and second positions to inhibit rotational motion of said movable member relative to said detachable member.

2. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and second windows are positioned on said cylindrical body and wherein the first and second windows are aligned with the at least one channel.

3. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 2 , wherein said first and second windows are configured for revealing selective areas of said body portion of said movable member inside sidewall of said cylindrical body of said detachable member.

4. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 3 , wherein said selective areas of said body portion of said movable member include said at least one locking feature.

5. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 2 , wherein at least one of said first and second windows and the at least one channel are each configured to accommodate said at least one locking feature.

6. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 2 , wherein said first and second windows minimize weight of said detachable member, wherein the at least one locking feature comprises at least one locking tab, and wherein the sidewall of the cylindrical body comprises at least one groove that engages the at least one locking feature of the movable member.

7. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said detachable member has at least one mating feature corresponding to said at least one locking feature of said movable member.

8. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one channel of the detachable member has two channels extending along an inner surface of said cylindrical body, and said body portion of said movable member has two prongs, wherein the two channels are configured to receive the prongs and wherein said two channels of said detachable member is configured to receive and allow said two prongs of said movable member to engage said collar of said bone fastener assembly.

9. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 8 , wherein said at least one locking feature is an integral part of at least one of said two prongs of said movable member.

10. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one locking feature is an integral part of said body portion of said movable member.

11. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one locking feature is an integral part of said head portion of said movable member.

12. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said head portion of said movable member has a twistable element.

13. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein a first end of said detachable member is configured to accommodate said at least one locking feature of said movable member.

14. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said push motion results in the at least one locking feature moving one or more clicks, which are achieved by spring tension.

15. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said second end of said detachable member is configured for detachably coupling to said collar of said bone fastener assembly by moving said movable member one click.

16. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 1 , wherein said second end of said detachable member is configured for detachably coupling to said collar of said bone fastener assembly by moving said movable member one click.

17. A spinal implantation system, comprising:

at least one rod;

two or more bone fastener assemblies for fixing said at least one rod onto two or more vertebral bodies, each bone fastener assembly including a collar; and

two or more quick-connect sleeve assemblies for anchoring said two or more bone fastener assemblies onto said two or more vertebral bodies in a minimally invasive procedure, each quick-connect sleeve assembly comprising:

a detachable member having a cylindrical body, a channel extending longitudinally along an inner surface of said cylindrical body, a second end being configured for coupling to the collar of one of the two or more bone fastener assemblies; and

a movable member having a head portion, a body portion, and a locking feature for latching onto said detachable member, the body portion configured to be received within a first end of said detachable member, the locking feature engageable with a mating feature on the first end to hinder rotational movement of the movable member; and

wherein, in a first position associated with a first window, a distal end of said body portion of said movable member is not configured to engage said collar of said bone fastener assembly and the distal end of said body portion of said movable member is not configured to engage said collar of said bone fastener assembly and, in a second position associated with a second window, the distal end of said body portion of said movable member is configured to engage said collar through said detachable member to prevent rotational motion of said collar relative to said detachable member and wherein the channel extends between the first and second positions to inhibit rotational motion of said movable member relative to said detachable member.

18. The spinal implantation system of claim 17 , wherein said second end of said detachable member is configured for coupling to said collar of each said bone fastener assembly by advancing said movable member one click, wherein the locking feature comprises at least one locking tab, and wherein a sidewall of the cylindrical body comprises at least one groove that engages the at least one locking feature of the movable member, and wherein said at least one locking feature of said movable member is configured to allow said movable member to securely latch onto said detachable member at one click.

19. A quick-connect sleeve assembly, comprising:

a detachable member having a cylindrical body, at least one channel contained within a sidewall of said cylindrical body, and first and second windows positioned on said cylindrical body;

a movable member having a head portion, a body portion, and at least one locking feature for latching onto said detachable member with a push motion, a twist motion, or a combination thereof;

wherein the sidewall of the cylindrical body comprises at least one groove extending between and aligned with the first and second windows that engages the at least one locking feature of the movable member; and

wherein a distal end of said body portion of said movable member is configured to engage a collar of a bone fastener assembly through displacement of the locking feature along said at least one groove of said detachable member to inhibit translational motion of said collar relative to said detachable member.

20. The quick-connect sleeve assembly of claim 19 , wherein a second end of said detachable member is configured for coupling to a collar of a bone fastener assembly; wherein said at least one channel of said detachable member is configured to accommodate said body portion of said movable member, wherein, in a first position associated with the first window, the distal end of said body portion of said movable member is not configured to engage said collar of said bone fastener assembly and, in a second position associated with the second window, the distal end of said body portion of said movable member is configured to engage said collar, and wherein the at least one channel extends between the first and second positions to inhibit rotational motion of said movable member relative to said detachable member.
