Abstract

A clathrate of 1-methylcyclopropene with α-cyclodextrin, obtained as a solid particulate product, is modified by comminuting, classifying, or both to obtain a modified particulate. When subjected to identical atmospheric disgorgement conditions of humidity and temperature, identical masses of the modified and unmodified particulates exhibit different rates of 1-methylcyclopropene disgorgement. Specifically, we have found that a smaller mean particle size is inversely related to a greater rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release.

1. A method of modifying a rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release from a particulate product consisting essentially of a 1-methylcyclopropene clathrate of α-cyclodextrin, the method comprising

subjecting an amount of a particulate product having a first mean particle size and consisting essentially of a 1-methylcyclopropene clathrate of α-cyclodextrin to a set of disgorgement conditions while measuring a first rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release therefrom;

classifying an additional amount of the particulate product to obtain a classified particulate portion thereof, the obtained classified particulate portion consisting essentially of the 1-methylcyclopropene clathrate of α-cyclodextrin and having a second mean particle size that differs by at least 20% from the first mean particle size; and

subjecting the obtained classified particulate portion consisting essentially of the 1-methylcyclopropene clathrate of α-cyclodextrin to the set of disgorgement conditions while measuring the rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release therefrom,

wherein the measured rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release from the particulate product is different from the measured rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release from the obtained classified particulate portion.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the second mean particle size of the obtained classified particulate portion is 20% to 200% higher the first mean particle size of the particulate product.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the second mean particle size of the obtained classified particulate portion is 20% to 99.9% lower than the first mean particle size of the particulate product.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the measured rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release from the obtained classified particulate portion is faster than the measured rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release from the particulate product.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the measured rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release from the obtained classified particulate portion is slower than the measured rate of 1-methylcyclopropene release from the particulate product.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the obtained classified particulate portion is a first classified particulate portion, wherein the first classified particulate portion has a mean particle size between 3 μm and 15 μm as determined by a volume-based method.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the volume-based method is light scattering.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising comminuting the additional amount of the particulate product prior to classifying.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the comminuting is grinding, fluidized bed milling, jet milling, ultrasonic milling, ball milling, hammer milling, cryogenic milling, or a combination thereof.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the classifying is sieving, gravitational separation, fluidized bed separation, or a combination thereof.

11. The method of claim 6 wherein the first classified particulate portion has a mean particle size of 3 μm, 4 μm, 5 μm, 6 μm, 7 μm, 8 μm, 9 μm, 10 μm, 11 μm, 12 μm, 13 μm, 14 μm, or 15 μm as determined by the volume-based method.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the obtained classified particulate portion is a first classified particulate portion, and the method further comprises obtaining a second classified particulate portion.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising admixing 1 to 1000 parts by weight of the obtained classified particulate portion with about 1 to 1000 parts by weight of the particulate product to obtain a combined modified particulate.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the method further comprises obtaining a third classified particulate portion, wherein each of the first, second, and third classified particulate portions has a different mean particle size as determined by the volume-based method.

15. The method of claim 12 comprising combining the first classified particulate portion with the second classified particulate portion to obtain a combined modified particulate.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the combining is admixing 1 to 1000 parts by weight of the first classified particulate portion with about 1 to 1000 parts by weight of the second classified particulate portion.

17. The method of claim 14 further comprising combining one or more of the first, second, or third classified particulate portions with the particulate product to obtain a combined modified particulate.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the combining is admixing 1 to 1000 parts by weight of the first, second, or third classified particulate portion with about 1 to 1000 parts by weight of the particulate product.

19. The method of claim 13 further comprising subjecting the combined modified particulate to the set of disgorgement conditions.
