Abstract

Systems and methods are described for a media guidance application (e.g., implemented on a user device) that improves quality of service while streaming code-agnostic content by optimizing buffering based on bit rate.

Claims (33)

1 - 51 . (canceled)

52 . A method comprising:

accessing a manifest file, wherein the manifest file enables a device to request a plurality of segments of a media asset;

determining, based on a profile, that a particular segment of the plurality of segments of the media asset is unlikely to be viewed;

causing the device that is playing the media asset based on the manifest file not to buffer data of the particular segment, wherein the manifest file is usable by the device to play the particular segment; and

causing the device to play the media asset based on the manifest file.

53 . The method of claim 52 , wherein the device is not blocked from playing the particular segment.

54 . The method of claim 52 , further comprising causing the device to automatically skip playing of the particular segment.

55 . The method of claim 54 , further comprising: in response to receiving a command to rewind the media asset, causing the device to play the particular segment, after causing the device to automatically skip playing of the particular segment, wherein the particular segment is played based on the manifest file.

56 . The method of claim 54 , further comprising causing the device, based on the manifest file, to buffer another segment of the plurality of segments of the media asset that is different from the particular segment of the plurality of segments.

57 . The method of claim 52 , further comprising:

transmitting the manifest file to the device.

58 . The method of claim 52 , wherein the manifest file comprises metadata information for each segment of the plurality of segments.

59 . The method of claim 58 , wherein the metadata information comprises at least one of size of a segment, length of a segment, and indication of bit rate of a segment.

60 . The method of claim 58 , wherein the metadata information indicates a buffering priority for each segment of the plurality of segments.

61 . The method of claim 52 , wherein causing the device to play the media asset based on the manifest file comprises causing the device to play a segment from a buffer or from a remote device.

62 . A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

access a manifest file, wherein the manifest file enables a device to request a plurality of segments of a media asset;

determine, based on a profile, that a particular segment of the plurality of segments of the media asset is unlikely to be viewed; and

cause the device that is playing the media asset based on the manifest file not to buffer data of the particular segment, wherein the manifest file is usable by the device to play the particular segment; and

a communications circuitry configured to:

cause the device to play the media asset based on the manifest file.

63 . The system of claim 62 , wherein the manifest file does not block playing of the particular segment by the device.

64 . The system of claim 62 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to cause the device to automatically skip playing of the particular segment.

65 . The system of claim 64 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to: in response to receiving a command to rewind the media asset, cause the device to play the particular segment, after causing the device to automatically skip playing of the particular segment, wherein the particular segment is played based on the manifest file.

66 . The system of claim 64 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to cause the device, based on the manifest file, to buffer another segment of the plurality of segments of the media asset that is different from the particular segment of the plurality of segments.

67 . The system of claim 62 , wherein the communications circuitry is further configured to:

transmit the manifest file to the device.

68 . The system of claim 62 , wherein the manifest file comprises metadata information for each segment of the plurality of segments.

69 . The system of claim 68 , wherein the metadata information comprises at least one of size of a segment, length of a segment, and indication of bit rate of a segment.

70 . The system of claim 68 , wherein the metadata information indicates a buffering priority for each segment of the plurality of segments.

71 . The system of claim 62 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to cause the device to play the media asset based on the manifest file by causing the device to play a segment from a buffer or from a remote device.
