Abstract

A client determines that a user is attempting to access media program recommendations. In response to the determination, the client attempts to collect media program recommendations to be presented to the user. Media program recommendations may be derived locally by the client, by the client and a multimedia device locally connected with the client, by the client and one or more additional devices, etc. In some embodiments, in response to receiving a query from the client, one or more recipient devices or servers identify media program recommendations in a plurality of trending categories. The media program recommendations may be selected based at least in part on EPG data and audience research and measurement data. The media program recommendations collected by the client are presented to the user for further exploration. The client may be one of mobile phones, tablet computers, etc.

generating, for simultaneous display at the computing device with the identifiers for the first selected portion of media content items of the first category, identifiers for media content items of a second category of trending media content items, wherein the overlay does not obscure the identifiers for the media content items of the second category.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

generating, for simultaneous display at the computing device with the identifiers for the first selected portion of media content items and the identifiers for media content items of the second category, identifiers for media content items of a third category of trending media content items, wherein the overlay does not obscure the identifiers for the media content items of the second category or the identifiers for the media content items of the third category.

12. A system comprising:

a computer memory storing instructions; and

control circuitry configured to execute the instructions stored in the computer memory to:

determine a first category of trending media content items, wherein the first category corresponds to a content type;

retrieve a user's viewing preference for a particular category of media content items, wherein the particular category corresponds to a content characteristic;

in response to retrieving the user's viewing preference for the particular category of media content items, select a first portion of media content items from the first category of trending media content items based on the user's viewing preference, wherein the first selected portions of media content items correspond to the particular category;

generate, for display at a computing device, identifiers for the first selected portion of media content items along with first information identifying the first category of trending media content items;

cause an overlay comprising a plurality of selectable genre identifiers to be displayed, wherein causing the overlay to be displayed comprises:

determining whether the computing device comprises a display of a relatively smaller size or a display of a relatively larger size;

in response to determining that the computing device comprises a display of a relatively smaller size, causing the overlay to be of a first size and causing the overlay of the first size to obscure each of the displayed identifiers for the first selected portion of media content items; and

in response to determining that the computing device comprises a display of a relatively larger size, causing the overlay to be of a second size,

wherein a first ratio of the first size to a size of the display of the computing device of the relatively smaller size exceeds a second ratio of the second size to a size of the display of the computing device of the relatively larger size;

filter the first selected portions of media content items based on a genre corresponding to a particular genre identifier, of the plurality of selectable genre identifiers, that is selected via a user interface; and

generate, for display at the computing device, the filtered portion of media content items for the first category of trending media content items, along with the first information.
