Abstract

A system for split-frequency amplification, preferably including: one or more primary-band amplification stages, one or more secondary-band amplification stages, one or more band-splitting filters, and/or one or more signal couplers. An analog canceller including one or more split-frequency amplifiers. A mixer including one or more split-frequency amplifiers. A voltage-controlled oscillator including one or more split-frequency amplifiers. A method for split-frequency amplification, preferably including: receiving an input signal, separating the input signal into signal portions, and/or amplifying the signal portions, and optionally including combining the amplified signal portions and/or providing one or more output signals.

Claims (81)

1. A system for split-frequency amplification, comprising:

a plurality of circuit branches, the plurality comprising a first branch and a second branch;

an input coupler that:

receives an input signal comprising a first band and a second band; and

couples a respective portion of the input signal onto each circuit branch of the plurality; and

an output coupler that:

receives a plurality of output signals from the plurality of circuit branches; and

combines the plurality of output signals into an output signal;

wherein:

the first band comprises a first frequency and does not comprise a second frequency lower than the first frequency;

the second band comprises the second frequency and does not comprise the first frequency;

the first branch comprises:

a first high-pass filter (HPF) defining a first cutoff frequency between the first and second frequencies; and

a first amplifier stage coupled to the first HPF, wherein the first amplifier stage receives a first portion of the input signal and amplifies the first portion into a first amplified signal of the plurality of amplified signals;

the second branch receives a second portion of the input signal and generates, based on the second portion of the input signal, a second output signal of the plurality of output signals, wherein the second portion exhibits a different spectral characteristic than the first portion; and

the second branch is electrically connected in parallel with the first branch between the input coupler and the output coupler.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a second amplifier stage on the second branch, wherein:

the second amplifier stage receives the second portion of the input signal and amplifies the second portion into the second output signal;

the first amplifier stage exhibits a first spectral response; and

the second amplifier stage exhibits a second spectral response substantially different from the first spectral response.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein:

the first amplifier stage exhibits a first high-frequency gain at the first frequency;

the second amplifier stage exhibits a second low-frequency gain at the second frequency; and

the second amplifier stage exhibits a second high-frequency gain at the first frequency, wherein the second high-frequency gain is substantially less than the first high-frequency gain and is substantially less than the second low-frequency gain.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the second high-frequency gain is less than the second low-frequency gain by more than 6 dB.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second branch comprises a first low-pass filter (LPF) defining a second cutoff frequency between the first and second frequencies.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the second cutoff frequency is substantially greater than the first cutoff frequency.

7. The system of claim 6 , further comprising a second amplifier stage on the second branch, wherein:

the second amplifier stage receives the second portion of the input signal and amplifies the second portion into the second output signal;

the first amplifier stage exhibits a first spectral response; and

the second amplifier stage exhibits a second spectral response substantially different from the first spectral response.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first amplifier stage receives the first portion of the input signal from the first HPF.

9. A system for split-frequency amplification, comprising:

a plurality of circuit branches, the plurality comprising a first branch and a second branch;

an input coupler that:

receives an input signal comprising a first band and a second band; and

couples a respective portion of the input signal onto each circuit branch of the plurality, the input signal; and

an output coupler that:

receives a plurality of output signals from the plurality of circuit branches; and

combines the plurality of output signals into an output signal;

wherein:

the first band comprises a first frequency and does not comprise a second frequency;

the second band comprises the second frequency and does not comprise the first frequency;

the first branch comprises:

a first filter defining a first cutoff frequency between the first and second frequencies; and

a first amplifier stage coupled to the first filter, wherein the first amplifier stage receives a first portion of the input signal and amplifies the first portion into a first amplified signal of the plurality of amplified signals;

the second branch receives a second portion of the input signal and generates, based on the second portion of the input signal, a second output signal of the plurality of output signals, wherein the second portion exhibits a different spectral characteristic than the first portion; and

the second branch is electrically connected in parallel with the first branch between the input coupler and the output coupler.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the second branch comprises a second filter defining a second cutoff frequency between the first and second frequencies.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second cutoff frequency is substantially different from the first cutoff frequency.

12. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a second amplifier stage on the second branch, wherein:

the second amplifier stage receives the second portion of the input signal and amplifies the second portion into the second output signal;

the first amplifier stage exhibits a first spectral response; and

the second amplifier stage exhibits a second spectral response substantially different from the first spectral response.

The system of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of circuit branches further comprises a third branch, the third branch comprising a third amplifier stage that receives a third portion of the input signal and amplifies the third portion into a third output signal of the plurality of output signals.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein:

the second frequency is lower than the first frequency; and

the first filter comprises a first high-pass filter (HPF).

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first amplifier stage receives the first portion of the input signal from the first filter.

16. A method for split-frequency amplification, comprising:

receiving an input signal comprising a first band and a second band;

separating the input signal into a plurality of signal portions comprising a first portion and a second portion;

at a first filter, spectrally filtering the first portion such that a second band intensity of the second band within the first portion is reduced relative to a first band intensity of the first band within the first portion;

at a first amplifier, amplifying the first portion;

at a second amplifier separate from the first amplifier, amplifying the second portion; and

after spectrally filtering the first portion and amplifying the first and second portions, combining the plurality of signal portions into an output signal.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein:

the first band comprises a first frequency and does not comprise a second frequency lower than the first frequency;

the second band comprises the second frequency and does not comprise the first frequency; and

the first filter comprises a high-pass filter (HPF) defining a first cutoff frequency between the first and second frequencies.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein:

the first amplifier exhibits a first high-frequency gain at the first frequency;

the second amplifier exhibits a second low-frequency gain at the second frequency; and

the second amplifier exhibits a second high-frequency gain at the first frequency, wherein the second high-frequency gain is substantially less than the first high-frequency gain and is substantially less than the second low-frequency gain.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein:

the first amplifier comprises an MOS-based amplifier stage; and

the second amplifier comprises a BJT-based amplifier stage.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein:

the first amplifier exhibits a first noise power in the first band and exhibits a second noise power in the second band; and

the second amplifier exhibits a third noise power, greater than the first noise power, in the first band and exhibits a fourth noise power, lesser than the second noise power, in the second band.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first filter spectrally filters the first portion before the first amplifier amplifies the first portion.
