Abstract

A method for communicating with a legacy terminal supporting a legacy air interface and a new terminal supporting a next generation air interface including: assigning a same carrier to the legacy terminal and the new terminal; receiving a terminal identifier and an optional payload for transmission at a MAC/RLC layer; determining if the terminal identifier is associated with the legacy terminal or the new terminal; composing, based on the determining, a burst header; formatting, a burst including the burst header and the optional payload; and transmitting the burst. In the method, the burst header is set to one of the one or more valid burst headers when the burst is associated with the legacy terminal, and the burst header is set to one of the one or more undefined burst headers when the burst is associated with the new terminal.

Claims (35)

1. A method for communicating with a legacy terminal supporting a legacy air interface and a new terminal supporting a next generation air interface at a gateway, the method comprising:

assigning a same carrier to the legacy terminal and the new terminal;

receiving a terminal identifier and an optional payload for transmission at a MAC/RLC (Media Access Layer/Radio Link Control) layer;

determining if the terminal identifier is associated with the legacy terminal or the new terminal;

composing, based on the determining, a burst header;

formatting a burst comprising the burst header and the optional payload; and

transmitting the burst on the same carrier, wherein

the legacy air interface defines one or more valid burst headers and one or more undefined burst headers,

the burst header is set, in the composing, to one of the one or more valid burst headers when the burst is associated with the legacy terminal, and

the burst header is set, in the composing, to one of the one or more undefined burst headers when the burst is associated with the new terminal.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the next generation air interface supports a MCS (Modulation and Coding Scheme) unsupported by the legacy air interface.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the next generation air interface supports a ULMAP (Uplink Map).

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least of the one or more undefined burst headers identifies an MCS unsupported by the legacy air interface.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transmitting of a portion of the burst is in a portion of the same carrier.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the same carrier comprises a 5× carrier, and the transmitting for the next generation air interface transmits a portion of the burst in a 1× carrier, a 2× carrier or the 5× carrier.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the transmitting for the legacy air interface transmits the burst in the 5× carrier.

8. A system for a gateway to communicate with a legacy terminal supporting a legacy air interface and a new terminal supporting a next generation air interface, the system comprising:

the gateway to assign a same carrier to the legacy terminal and the new terminal;

a MAC/RLC (Media Access Layer/Radio Link Control) layer

to receive a terminal identifier and an optional payload for transmission,

to determine if the terminal identifier is associated with the legacy terminal or the new terminal, and

to compose a burst header based on the association;

a burst formatter to format a burst comprising the burst header and the optional payload; and

a transmitter to transmit the burst on the same carrier, wherein

the legacy air interface defines one or more valid burst headers and one or more undefined burst headers,

the burst header is set, by the burst formatter, to one of the one or more valid burst headers when the burst is associated with the legacy terminal, and

the burst header is set, by the burst formatter, to one of the one or more undefined burst headers when the burst is associated with the new terminal.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the next generation air interface supports a MCS (Modulation and Coding Scheme) unsupported by the legacy air interface.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the next generation air interface supports a ULMAP (Uplink Map).

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein at least of the one or more undefined burst headers identifies an MCS unsupported by the legacy air interface.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the transmitter transmits a portion of the burst in a portion of the same carrier.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the same carrier comprises a 5× carrier, and the transmitter for the next generation air interface transmits a portion of the burst in a 1× carrier, a 2× carrier or the 5× carrier.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the burst header comprise public user information (PUI), an extended PUI, and an uplink map (ULMAP), and wherein the ULMAP is indicated to be present by the extended PUI.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the PUI includes Modulation Coding Scheme (MCS) information, burst duration for the optional payload, and Uplink Status Flag (USF) information.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the optional payload is modulated differently than other portions of the burst.
