Abstract

The invention provides compositions comprising one or more bacterial strains for treating preventing diarrhea and/or constipation.

Claims (23)

.- 34 . (canceled)

. A method of treating or preventing diarrhea associated with Enterobacteriaceae infection in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising a bacteria strain of the genus Blautia,

wherein the bacteria strain comprises a 16S rRNA gene having at least 95% sequence identity to the polynucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:5,

wherein the subject has an Enterobacteriaceae infection, and wherein the administering is effective to treat or prevent diarrhea in the subject.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the administering reduces the level of Enterobacteriaceae in the gastrointestinal tract.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition comprises from about 1×10 9 to about 1×10 12 colony forming units (CFU) of the bacteria strain.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition comprises from about 1×10 3 to about 1×10 11 CFU per gram (CFU/g) of the bacteria strain with respect to a total weight of the pharmaceutical composition.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the Enterobacteriaceae is E. coli.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the subject is a human.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is formulated for oral administration.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is formulated for rectal administration.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is formulated as a suppository.

. The method of claim 43 , wherein the suppository comprises cocoa butter, suppocire, witepsol, glycero-gelatin, polyethylene glycol, or soap glycerin.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the bacteria strain is lyophilized.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition further comprises a lyoprotectant.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the subject is currently receiving an antibiotic treatment.

. The method of claim 47 , wherein the antibiotic is fluoroquinolone, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin or rifaximin.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the bacteria strain comprises a 16S rRNA gene having at least 98% sequence identity to the polynucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:5.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the bacteria strain comprises a 16S rRNA gene having the polynucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:5.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition comprises a single bacteria strain of the genus Blautia.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition comprises the bacteria strain of the genus Blautia as part of a microbial consortium.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the bacteria strain is of the species Blautia hydrogenotrophica.

. The method of claim 35 , wherein the bacteria strain is the strain deposited under accession number DSM 10507/14294.
