Abstract

A bed rail having a guard frame that prevents a child from rolling off a bed and a pair of legs that extend between the mattress and box spring. The guard frame swings between up and down positions and is pivotally connected to the legs via a first junction. A second junction locks the guard frame to the legs. The second junction includes a rotatable seat that engages a pin extending from the guard frame. The bed rail further includes a strap that engages a proximal end of a leg, a distal end of the leg, and an anchor, which engages the side of the bed opposite of the bed rail.

Claims (10)

1. In combination with a bed, a bed rail for preventing a child from rolling off the bed, with the bed having a mattress and a base, with the mattress being on the base, with the bed having first and second sides that are opposite of each other, with the bed having a sleeping surface, with the bed rail comprising:

a) a guard frame that includes an up position and a down position, with the guard frame in the up position confronting the first side of the bed and extending upwardly beyond the sleeping surface, and with the guard frame in the down position confronting the first side of the bed and extending downwardly;

b) a pair of legs for being disposed between the mattress and base;

c) a first connection between each of the legs and the guard frame, with the first connection comprising a pivot between said leg and the guard frame such that the guard frame can swing between the up and down positions; and

d) a second connection between each of the legs and the guard frame, with the second connection comprising:

i) a member engaged to and extending from the guard frame; and

ii) a seat for the member, with the seat pivotably engaged to said leg and pivotable between an open position and a locked position, the member being engagable and disengagable from the seat when the seat is in the open position such that the guard frame is swingable when the seat is in the open position, the guard frame being prevented from swinging when the seat is in the locked position and the member is in the seat.

2. In combination with a bed, a bed rail for preventing a child from rolling off the bed, with the bed having a mattress and a base, with the mattress being on the base, with the bed having first and second sides that are opposite of each other, with the bed having a sleeping surface, with the bed rail comprising: a) a guard frame that includes an up position and a down position, with the guard frame in the up position confronting the first side of the bed and extending upwardly beyond the sleeping surface, and with the guard frame in the down position confronting the first side of the bed and extending downwardly; b) a pair of legs for being disposed between the mattress and base; c) a first connection between each of the legs and the guard frame, with the first connection comprising a pivot between said leg and the guard frame such that the guard frame can swing between the up and down positions; d) a second connection between each of the legs and the guard frame, with the second connection having an open position and a locked position, the open position permitting the guard frame to swing relative to the legs, the locked position locking the guard frame in the up position; and e) wherein the leg includes a tube portion and a proximal end, the proximal end including a housing, the housing comprising: i) an outer housing sidewall having an outer opening through which said pivot extends; ii) an inner housing sidewall having an outer opening through which said pivot extends; and iii) a shaft engaged to each of the outer and inner housing sidewalls and further engaged to the second connection; f) the tube portion engaging a receptacle of the housing, the tube portion extending between the mattress and base, and g) wherein the guard frame includes a rail portion that swings to and away from the mattress, with the rail portion being an outermost rail portion, and with the entire housing being outwardly of the outermost rail portion along a longitudinal axis of the rail portion.

3. In combination with a bed, a bed rail for preventing a child from rolling off the bed, with the bed having a mattress and a base, with the mattress being on the base, with the bed having first and second sides that are opposite of each other, with the bed having a sleeping surface, with the bed rail comprising: a) a guard frame that includes an up position and a down position, with the guard frame in the up position confronting the first side of the bed and extending upwardly beyond the sleeping surface, and with the guard frame in the down position confronting the first side of the bed and extending downwardly; b) a pair of legs for being disposed between the mattress and base; c) a first connection between each of the legs and the guard frame, with the first connection comprising a pivot between said leg and the guard frame such that the guard frame can swing between the up and down positions; d) a second connection between each of the legs and the guard frame, with the second connection having an open position and a locked position, the open position permitting the guard frame to swing relative to the legs, the locked position locking the guard frame in the up position; e) wherein the leg includes a proximal end, the proximal end including a housing, the housing comprising: i) an outer housing sidewall; ii) an inner housing sidewall; iii) a front wall; iv) a top wall; v) a bottom wall, the front wall, top wall, and bottom wall spacing the outer and inner housing sidewalls apart; and vi) a receptacle; f) wherein the leg includes a tube portion, the tube portion engaging the receptacle of the housing, the tube portion extending between the mattress and base; and g) wherein the guard frame includes a rail portion that swings to and away from the mattress, with the rail portion being an outermost rail portion, and with the entire housing being outwardly of the outermost rail portion along a longitudinal axis of the rail portion.

4. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the member comprises a pin having a head, and wherein the seat that is pivotable engages therein the head of the pin of the member.
