Abstract

A portable information handling system user interface adapts based upon a position of a keyboard, such as a position detected by accelerations, Hall sensors, ambient light sensors and/or touchscreen display touches. In one example embodiment, a visual indication presented at a display aids end user location of a keyboard in a hidden position, such as a sliding keyboard disposed under a housing portion or a membrane keyboard integrated in a housing portion lower surface and exposed by a disconnect and flip motion.

Claims (32)

1. A method for information handling system keyboard detection, the method comprising:

disposing a first display portion over a first side of a first housing portion;

disposing a second display portion over a first side of a second housing portion;

rotationally coupling the first and second housing portions to each other;

coupling a keyboard to the second side of the second housing portion;

sensing accelerations associated with the first housing portion, the second housing portion and the keyboard; and

detecting a transition of the keyboard between hidden and exposed positions by comparing the accelerations;

detecting a perpendicular acceleration vector between the keyboard and the first housing portion;

confirming the transition with ambient light sensors disposed in the first housing portion and second housing portion;

separating the first and second housing portions from each other at the hinge; and

flipping the orientation of the second housing portion relative to the first housing portion to expose the keyboard.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the detecting a transition further comprises:

detecting a perpendicular acceleration vector between the keyboard and the first housing portion; and

confirming the transition with a Hall sensor disposed between the keyboard and the second housing portion.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

turning off presentation of visual images at the second display portion; and

presenting stacked icons at the first display portion representing visual images turned off from the second display portion.

4. A method for information handling system keyboard detection, the method comprising:

disposing a first display portion over a first side of a first housing portion;

disposing a second display portion over a first side of a second housing portion;

rotationally coupling the first and second housing portions to each other;

coupling a keyboard to the second side of the second housing portion;

sensing accelerations associated with the first housing portion, the second housing portion and the keyboard; and

detecting a transition of the keyboard between hidden and exposed positions by comparing the accelerations;

sensing a keyboard hidden position with a Hall sensor disposed between the second housing portion and keyboard;

presenting at the second display portion an indicator of the keyboard position;

de-coupling the keyboard from the second housing portion;

coupling the keyboard to a second side of the first housing portion in a hidden position; and

presenting at the first display portion an indicator of the keyboard position.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

sensing movement of the keyboard from the hidden position to an exposed position; and

in response to the sensing, removing the indicator of the keyboard position.
