Abstract

An in-wall power adapter configured to control an application of power to a load is described. The in-wall power adapter comprises a first plurality of contact elements accessible on an outer surface of the in-wall power adapter, the first plurality of contact elements comprising a first contact element configured to receive a power signal; a second plurality of contact elements configured to be coupled to a control attachment for routing the power signal to a load; and a housing having a planar surface for receiving a wall plate adapted to be coupled to the in-wall power adapter; wherein the planar surface comprises a recess for receiving a flange of a control attachment adapted to be coupled to the in-wall power adapter.

Claims (36)

1. An in-wall power adapter configured to control an application of power to a load, the in-wall power adapter comprising:

a first plurality of contact elements accessible on an outer surface of the in-wall power adapter, the first plurality of contact elements comprising a first contact element configured to receive a power signal;

a second plurality of contact elements configured to be coupled to a control attachment for routing the power signal to the control attachment; and

a housing having a planar surface and adapted to receive a wall plate adapted to be coupled to the in-wall power adapter;

wherein the planar surface comprises a recess for receiving a flange of the control attachment adapted to be coupled to the in-wall power adapter; and

wherein the flange comprises a detachable flange, and the control attachment is prevented from being removed when the flange is attached to the control attachment and the wall plate is attached to the in-wall power adapter.

2. The in-wall power adapter of claim 1 , further comprising an outlet that is coupled to receive the power signal, wherein the outlet is adapted to receive a plug.

3. The in-wall power adapter of claim 2 , wherein the outlet is adapted to extend through an opening of the wall plate coupled to the in-wall power adapter.

4. The in-wall power adapter of claim 1 , further comprising the control attachment having a third plurality of contact elements coupled to the second plurality of contact elements.

5. The in-wall power adapter of claim 4 , further comprising a wall plate, when the control attachment can be removed from the in-wall power adapter when the flange is detached from the control attachment.

6. The in-wall power adapter of claim 5 , wherein the in-wall power adapter comprises an outlet, and the outlet extends through an opening of the wall plate.

7. The in-wall power adapter of claim 5 wherein the flange is covered by the wall plate and prevents the control attachment from being removed when the flange is attached to the control attachment and the wall plate is attached to the in-wall power adapter.

8. An in-wall power adapter configured to control an application of power to a load, the in-wall power adapter comprising:

a first plurality of contact elements accessible on an outer surface of the in-wall power adapter, the first plurality of contact elements comprising a first contact element configured to receive a power signal;

an outlet adapted to receive a plug;

a second plurality of contact elements configured to be coupled to a control attachment for routing the power signal to the control attachment; and

a housing having a planar surface and adapted to receive a wall plate adapted to be coupled to the in-wall power adapter;

wherein the planar surface comprises a recess for receiving a flange of the control attachment adapted to be coupled to the in-wall power adapter; and

wherein the flange comprises a detachable flange, and the control attachment is prevented from being removed when the flange is attached to the control attachment and the wall plate is attached to the in-wall power adapter.

9. The in-wall power adapter of claim 8 , wherein the outlet is adapted to extend through an opening of the wall plate.

10. The in-wall power adapter of claim 8 , further comprising the control attachment having a third plurality of contact elements coupled to the second plurality of contact elements.

11. The in-wall power adapter of claim 10 , further comprising the wall plate, wherein the control attachment can be removed from the in-wall power adapter when the flange is detached from the control attachment.

12. The in-wall power adapter of claim 11 , wherein the control attachment comprises an outlet, and the outlet extends through an opening of the wall plate.

13. The in-wall power adapter of claim 11 wherein the flange is covered by the wall plate and prevents the control attachment from being removed when the flange is attached to the control attachment and the wall plate is attached to the in-wall power adapter.

14. A method of implementing an in-wall power adapter configured to control an application of power to a load, the method comprising:

providing a first plurality of contact elements accessible on an outer surface of the in-wall power adapter, the first plurality of contact elements comprising a first contact element configured to receive a power signal;

configuring a second plurality of contact elements to be coupled to a control attachment for routing the power signal to the control attachment; and

providing a housing having a planar surface adapted to receive a wall plate adapted to be coupled to the in-wall power adapter;

wherein the planar surface comprises a recess for receiving a flange of the control attachment adapted to be coupled to the in-wall power adapter; and

wherein the flange comprises a detachable flange, and the control attachment is prevented from being removed when the flange is attached to the control attachment and the wall plate is attached to the in-wall power adapter.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising providing an outlet on the in-wall power adapter and coupled to receive the power signal, wherein the outlet is adapted to receive a plug.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the outlet is adapted to extend through an opening of the wall plate coupled to the in-wall power adapter.

17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising receiving the control attachment having a third plurality of contact elements coupled to the second plurality of contact elements, wherein the power signal is provided to the control attachment.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising receiving a wall plate that is attached to the in-wall power adapter.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the control attachment can be removed from the in-wall power adapter through an opening of the wall plate when the flange is detached from the control attachment.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein the flange is covered by the wall plate and prevents the control attachment from being removed when the wall plate is attached to the in-wall power adapter.
