Abstract

Mitigating website privacy issues by automatically identifying cookie sharing risks in a cookie ecosystem. In some embodiments, a method may include generating, by the computing device, a cookie tree representing cookies created on a web browser while browsing a website. The cookie tree may include nodes representing organizations. The cookie tree may further include hierarchical edges between the nodes representing creation chains of the nodes. The method may also include determining, by the computing device, a creator, a sender, and a receiver of each of the cookies. The method may further include mitigating, by the computing device, website privacy issues based on the creator, sender, and receiver of each of the cookies.

Claims (73)

1. A computer-implemented method for mitigating website privacy issues by automatically identifying cookie sharing risks in a cookie ecosystem, at least a portion of the method being performed by a computing device comprising one or more processors, the computer-implemented method comprising:

generating, by the computing device, a cookie tree representing cookies created on a web browser while browsing a website, the cookie tree comprising nodes representing organizations and hierarchical edges between the nodes representing creation chains of the nodes;

determining, by the computing device, a creator, a sender, and a receiver of each of the cookies, wherein the creator, the sender, and the receiver are organizations that are represented by nodes in the cookie tree and the receiver of each of the cookies is an organization other than the website; and

mitigating, by the computing device, website privacy issues based on the creator, sender, and receiver of each of the cookies.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the mitigating of the website privacy issues comprises:

blocking one or more of the cookies;

disabling one or more of the cookies;

preventing creation of one or more cookies that are similar to one or more of the cookies;

alerting an administrator regarding one or more of the cookies; or

some combination thereof.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the determining of the creator of each of the cookies comprises determining that the creator is:

a first party creator in which the website sets the cookie for the website;

a third party creator in which a third-party resource that is loaded externally from the website sets the cookie for a third party; or

a ghostwriter creator in which a third-party resource that is loaded externally from the website sets the cookie for the website.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the determining of the sender of each of the cookies comprises determining that the sender is:

an own sender in which the cookie is sent by a node that created the cookie;

an in-chain sender in which the cookie is sent by a node that is in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie; or

an off-chain sender in which the cookie is sent by a node that is not in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the determining of the receiver of each of the cookies comprises determining that the receiver is:

an own receiver in which the cookie is received by a node that created the cookie;

an in-chain receiver in which the cookie is received by a node that is in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie; or

an off-chain receiver in which the cookie is received by a node that is not in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying, on a computing device display, the creator, the sender, and the receiver of each of the cookies.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the generating of the cookie tree further comprises mapping multiple domains to a single organization.

One or more non-transitory computer-readable media comprising one or more computer readable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a computing device, cause the computing device to perform a method for mitigating website privacy issues by automatically identifying cookie sharing risks in a cookie ecosystem, the method comprising:

generating, by the computing device, a cookie tree representing cookies created on a web browser while browsing a website, the cookie tree comprising nodes representing organizations and hierarchical edges between the nodes representing creation chains of the nodes;

determining, by the computing device, a creator, a sender, and a receiver of each of the cookies, wherein the creator, the sender, and the receiver are organizations that are represented by nodes in the cookie tree and the receiver of each of the cookies is an organization other than the website; and

mitigating, by the computing device, website privacy issues based on the creator, sender, and receiver of each of the cookies.

9. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 8 , wherein the mitigating of the website privacy issues comprises:

blocking one or more of the cookies;

disabling one or more of the cookies;

preventing creation of one or more cookies that are similar to one or more of the cookies;

alerting an administrator regarding one or more of the cookies; or

some combination thereof.

10. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 8 , wherein the determining of the creator of each of the cookies comprises determining that the creator is:

a first party creator in which the website sets the cookie for the website;

a third party creator in which a third-party resource that is loaded externally from the website sets the cookie for a third party; or

a ghostwriter creator in which a third-party resource that is loaded externally from the website sets the cookie for the website.

11. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 10 , wherein the determining of the sender of each of the cookies comprises determining that the sender is:

an own sender in which the cookie is sent by a node that created the cookie;

an in-chain sender in which the cookie is sent by a node that is in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie; or

an off-chain sender in which the cookie is sent by a node that is not in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie.

12. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 11 , wherein the determining of the receiver of each of the cookies comprises determining that the receiver is:

an own receiver in which the cookie is received by a node that created the cookie;

an in-chain receiver in which the cookie is received by a node that is in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie; or

an off-chain receiver in which the cookie is received by a node that is not in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie.

13. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 8 , further comprising displaying, on a computing device display, the creator, the sender, and the receiver of each of the cookies.

14. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 8 , wherein the generating of the cookie tree further comprises mapping multiple domains to a single organization.

15. A computing device comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more non-transitory computer-readable media comprising one or more computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the computing device to perform a method for mitigating website privacy issues by automatically identifying cookie sharing risks in a cookie ecosystem, the method comprising:

generating a cookie tree representing cookies created on a web browser while browsing a website, the cookie tree comprising nodes representing organizations and hierarchical edges between the nodes representing creation chains of the nodes;

determining a creator, a sender, and a receiver of each of the cookies, wherein the creator, the sender, and the receiver are organizations that are represented by nodes in the cookie tree and the receiver of each of the cookies is an organization other than the website; and

mitigating website privacy issues based on the creator, sender, and receiver of each of the cookies.

16. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the mitigating of the website privacy issues comprises:

blocking one or more of the cookies;

disabling one or more of the cookies;

preventing creation of one or more cookies that are similar to one or more of the cookies;

alerting an administrator regarding one or more of the cookies; or

some combination thereof.

17. The computing device of claim 15 , wherein the determining of the creator of each of the cookies comprises determining that the creator is:

a first party creator in which the website sets the cookie for the website;

a third party creator in which a third-party resource that is loaded externally from the website sets the cookie for a third party; or

a ghostwriter creator in which a third-party resource that is loaded externally from the website sets the cookie for the website.

18. The computing device of claim 17 , wherein the determining of the sender of each of the cookies comprises determining that the sender is:

an own sender in which the cookie is sent by a node that created the cookie;

an in-chain sender in which the cookie is sent by a node that is in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie; or

an off-chain sender in which the cookie is sent by a node that is not in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie.

19. The computing device of claim 18 , wherein the determining of the receiver of each of the cookies comprises determining that the receiver is:

an own receiver in which the cookie is received by a node that created the cookie;

an in-chain receiver in which the cookie is received by a node that is in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie; or

an off-chain receiver in which the cookie is received by a node that is not in a creation chain of the node that created the cookie.

20. The computing device of claim 15 , further comprising displaying, on a computing device display, the creator, the sender, and the receiver of each of the cookies.
