Abstract

An instrument and method for tissue thermotherapy including an inductive heating means to generate a vapor phase media that is used for interstitial, intraluminal, intracavity or topical tissue treatment. In one method, the vapor phase media is propagated from a probe outlet to provide a controlled vapor-to-liquid phase change in an interface with tissue to thereby apply ablative thermal energy delivery.

Claims (14)

1. A medical system for ablation of a targeted site in a lumen in a gastrointestinal tract of a patient, the medical system comprising:

a catheter having a handle coupled to an elongate member with a working end, the catheter having a first flow channel extending from the handle to the working end, the elongate member having a length suited for introduction into the lumen to the targeted site in the gastrointestinal tract;

an energy source configured to convert a media into a heated flow media and configured to deliver the heated flow media through the elongate member to the working end using the first flow channel;

a second flow channel extending from the handle to the working end and configured to allow outflow of the heated flow media from the working end;

at least one expandable structure carried by the working end to circumferentially contact walls of the gastrointestinal tract, wherein the at least one expandable structure when expanded prevents the heated flow media from contacting an adjacent surface of the gastrointestinal tract; and

a controller operatively connected to a pressure source to expand the at least one expandable structure and operatively connected to the energy source for controlling a delivery of the heated flow media through the first flow channel to ablate a thin layer of the targeted site.

2. The medical system of claim 1 wherein the heated flow media has a temperature of at least 60 degrees C.

3. The medical system of claim 1 wherein the energy source is configured to control at a rate of a flow of the heated flow media.

4. The medical system of claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to provide a pressure in the gastrointestinal tract between 0.1 psi and 20 psi.

5. The medical system of claim 1 wherein each expandable structure comprises a balloon.

6. The medical system of claim 1 further comprising at least one of a pressure sensor and a temperature sensor carried in the catheter.

7. The medical system of claim 6 wherein the controller is configured to modulate a parameter of the heated flow media delivery in response to signals from at least one of the pressure sensor and the temperature sensor carried in the catheter.

8. The medical system of claim 1 further comprising a visualization element carried by the catheter to visualize the gastrointestinal tract.

9. The medical system of claim 1 further comprising an accelerometer carried by the working end.
