Abstract

An electronic dispensing machine receives a request from a server to dispense a controlled device. The request includes a selection identifier corresponding to the controlled device and a user identifier corresponding to a user account. The machine activates a dispensing mechanism ejecting a particular controlled device from a storage position in the machine, and obtains a device identifier corresponding to the controlled device. Prior to releasing the controlled device to the user, the machine links the device identifier with the user identifier, and transmits the user identifier and the linked device identifier to the server, thereby causing the controlled device to be restricted for use such that subsequent to the transmitting of the user identifier and the linked device identifier to the server, the controlled device can only be used when in proximity to the electronic mobile device associated with the user identifier.

Claims (70)

1. An electronic dispensing machine including one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:

receiving, from a server, a request to dispense a controlled device, wherein the request includes:

(i) a selection identifier corresponding to a product type of the controlled device or a storage position of the controlled device in the electronic dispensing machine; and

(ii) a user identifier corresponding to a user account associated with the request;

activating a dispensing mechanism associated with the storage position of the controlled device, thereby ejecting a particular controlled device from the storage position;

obtaining a device identifier corresponding to the particular controlled device;

prior to releasing the particular controlled device from the electronic dispensing machine:

linking the device identifier with the user identifier; and

transmitting, to the server, the user identifier and the linked device identifier, thereby causing the particular controlled device to be restricted for use, wherein subsequent to the transmitting of the user identifier and the linked device identifier to the server, the particular controlled device can only be used when in proximity to the electronic mobile device associated with the user identifier; and

releasing the particular controlled device from the electronic dispensing machine.

2. The electronic dispensing machine of claim 1 , wherein the selection identifier corresponding to the product type or the storage position of the controlled device does not include the device identifier.

3. The electronic dispensing machine of claim 1 , wherein:

the selection identifier is associated with user selection of a controlled device; and

the user selection is associated with the user account corresponding to the user identifier.

4. The electronic dispensing machine of claim 1 , wherein:

the dispensing mechanism is configured to eject the particular controlled device to a scanning location inside the electronic dispensing machine; and

obtaining the device identifier includes scanning a visual tag of the particular controlled device using an imaging device or a laser scanner disposed at the scanning location.

5. The electronic dispensing machine of claim 1 , wherein:

the dispensing mechanism is configured to eject the particular controlled device to a scanning location inside the electronic dispensing machine; and

obtaining the device identifier includes scanning an electronic tag of the particular controlled device using a near-field communication (NFC) device disposed at the scanning location.

6. The electronic dispensing machine of claim 1 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

displaying a code corresponding to the electronic dispensing machine;

wherein the code identifies the electronic dispensing machine to the server.

7. The electronic dispensing machine of claim 1 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

subsequent to transmitting the user identifier and the associated device identifier to the server, receiving an authorization communication from the server, wherein the authorization communication is conditioned on a match of the associated device identifier with a controlled device selection associated with the user identifier; and

wherein releasing the particular controlled device is in accordance with the receiving of the authorization communication.

8. The electronic dispensing machine of claim 1 , wherein the one or more programs further include instructions for:

verifying, using a drop sensor disposed inside the electronic dispensing machine, that the particular controlled device was released from the electronic dispensing machine; and

in accordance with a positive verification that the particular controlled device was released from the electronic dispensing machine, transmitting, to the server, a verification communication.

9. The electronic dispensing machine of claim 1 , wherein:

the particular controlled device is an electronic vaporizing device; and

the electronic dispensing machine controls access to the particular controlled device by conditioning release of the particular controlled device upon receipt of the request from the server.

10. A method of operating an electronic dispensing device, comprising:

receiving, from a server, a request to dispense a controlled device, wherein the request includes:

(i) a selection identifier corresponding to a product type of the controlled device or a storage position of the controlled device in the electronic dispensing machine; and

(ii) a user identifier corresponding to a user account associated with the request;

activating a dispensing mechanism associated with the storage position of the controlled device, thereby ejecting a particular controlled device from the storage position;

obtaining a device identifier corresponding to the particular controlled device;

prior to releasing the particular controlled device from the electronic dispensing machine:

linking the device identifier with the user identifier; and

transmitting, to the server, the user identifier and the linked device identifier, thereby causing the particular controlled device to be restricted for use, wherein subsequent to the transmitting of the user identifier and the linked device identifier to the server, the particular controlled device can only be used when in proximity to the electronic mobile device associated with the user identifier; and

releasing the particular controlled device from the electronic dispensing machine.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the dispensing mechanism is configured to eject the particular controlled device to a scanning location inside the electronic dispensing machine; and

obtaining the device identifier includes scanning a visual tag of the particular controlled device using an imaging device or a laser scanner disposed at the scanning location or scanning an electronic tag of the particular controlled device using a near-field communication (NFC) device disposed at the scanning location.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

subsequent to transmitting the user identifier and the associated device identifier to the server, receiving an authorization communication from the server, wherein the authorization communication is conditioned on a match of the associated device identifier with a controlled device selection associated with the user identifier; and

wherein releasing the particular controlled device is in accordance with the receiving of the authorization communication.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the particular controlled device is an electronic vaporizing device; and

the electronic dispensing machine controls access to the particular controlled device by conditioning release of the particular controlled device upon receipt of the request from the server.

14. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by an electronic dispensing machine with one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform the operations of:

receiving, from a server, a request to dispense a controlled device, wherein the request includes:

(i) a selection identifier corresponding to a product type of the controlled device or a storage position of the controlled device in the electronic dispensing machine; and

(ii) a user identifier corresponding to a user account associated with the request;

activating a dispensing mechanism associated with the storage position of the controlled device, thereby ejecting a particular controlled device from the storage position;

obtaining a device identifier corresponding to the particular controlled device;

prior to releasing the particular controlled device from the electronic dispensing machine:

linking the device identifier with the user identifier; and

transmitting, to the server, the user identifier and the linked device identifier, thereby causing the particular controlled device to be restricted for use, wherein subsequent to the transmitting of the user identifier and the linked device identifier to the server, the particular controlled device can only be used when in proximity to the electronic mobile device associated with the user identifier; and

releasing the particular controlled device from the electronic dispensing machine.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein:

the dispensing mechanism is configured to eject the particular controlled device to a scanning location inside the electronic dispensing machine; and

obtaining the device identifier includes scanning a visual tag of the particular controlled device using an imaging device or a laser scanner disposed at the scanning location or scanning an electronic tag of the particular controlled device using a near-field communication (NFC) device disposed at the scanning location.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to perform the operations of:

subsequent to transmitting the user identifier and the associated device identifier to the server, receiving an authorization communication from the server, wherein the authorization communication is conditioned on a match of the associated device identifier with a controlled device selection associated with the user identifier; and

wherein releasing the particular controlled device is in accordance with the receiving of the authorization communication.
