Abstract

In various representative aspects, an apparatus for clamping and grounding solar panel frames to a mounting rail is disclosed herein. The apparatus includes a fastener with an enlarged end, and a shank, with the enlarged end having one or more sharp protrusions that resemble teeth, and a washer with one or more sharp protrusions, and an opening. When installed, the shank is inserted through the opening of the washer, the sharp protrusions of the enlarged end penetrate either the lower or upper surface of the mounting rail and the sharp protrusions of the washer penetrate the other surface of the solar panel frames while at the same time creating a grounding path through the apparatus.

Claims (53)

1. An assembly for securing solar panel mounting frames, the assembly comprising:

an electrically-conducting fastener, the fastener comprising:

a shank having a first end and a second end, and

an enlarged end positioned at the second end of the shank, wherein the enlarged end comprises a top surface, a bottom surface, and a plurality of raised ridges extending across the top surface, the plurality of raised ridges configured to penetrate a at least one surface layer of a mounting rail;

an electrically-conducting washer, the washer comprising:

a top washer surface,

a bottom washer surface,

a first side portion,

a second side portion, wherein the second side portion is opposite the first side portion,

a first downturned spacer member extending downwardly from the first side portion,

a second downturned spacer member extending downwardly from the second side portion, wherein the first downturned spacer member and the second downturned spacer member act as spacers between a pair of solar panel mounting frames,

a plurality of surface-penetrating members disposed along the first and second side portions configured to penetrate at least a surface layer of one or more of the solar panel mounting frames, wherein at least one of the plurality of surface-penetrating members is positioned on each side of both the first downturned spacer member and the second downturned spacer member, and

an opening formed through the washer between the top washer surface and the bottom washer surface, wherein the opening is configured to allow the first end of the shank to extend therethrough.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of surface-penetrating members configured to penetrate at least the surface layer of one or more solar panel mounting frames comprise tooth-shaped structures.

3. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the shank comprises an external thread extending along at least a portion thereof.

4. The assembly of claim 3 , further comprising a nut, wherein the nut comprises an internal thread such that the nut is configured to be coupled to the shank by a threaded connection.

5. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the pair of solar panel mounting frames comprises an elongated channel for receiving a solar panel.

6. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of raised ridges comprise a plurality of parallel ridges extending across the entire top surface of the enlarged end.

7. An assembly for securing solar panel mounting frames to a rail and providing a grounding path between the solar panel mounting frames and the rail, the assembly comprising:

a metallic first frame and a metallic second frame, wherein each of the metallic first frame and the metallic second frame comprises an elongated channel for receiving a solar panel;

a metallic mounting rail; and

a clamp assembly, the clamp assembly comprising:

an electrically-conducting fastener, the fastener comprising:

a shank having a first end and a second end, and

an enlarged end positioned at the second end of the shank, wherein the enlarged end comprises a top surface, a bottom surface, and a plurality of raised ridges extending across the top surface, the plurality of raised ridges configured to penetrate a surface layer of the metallic mounting rail;

an electrically-conducting washer, the washer comprising:

a top washer surface,

a bottom washer surface,

a first side portion,

a second side portion, wherein the second side portion is opposite the first side portion,

a first spacer member extending downwardly from the first side portion,

a second spacer member downwardly extending from the second side portion, wherein the first spacer member and the second spacer member are configured to act as spacers between the metallic first frame and the metallic second frame,

a plurality of sharp-edged surface-penetrating members disposed along the first and second side portions configured to penetrate a surface layer of each of the metallic first frame and the metallic second frame, wherein at least one of the plurality of surface-penetrating members is positioned on each side of both the first spacer member and the second spacer member, and

an opening formed through the washer between the top washer surface and the bottom washer surface, wherein the opening is configured to allow the first end of the shank to extend therethrough.

8. The assembly of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of surface-penetrating members configured to penetrate the surface layer of each of the metallic first frame and the metallic second frame comprise tooth-shaped structures.

9. The assembly of claim 7 , wherein the shank comprises an external thread extending along at least a portion thereof.

10. The assembly of claim 9 , further comprising a nut, wherein the nut comprises an internal thread such that the nut is configured to be coupled to the shank by a threaded connection.

11. The assembly of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of raised ridges comprise a plurality of parallel ridges extending across the entire top surface of the enlarged end.

12. A clamp assembly comprising:

an electrically-conducting fastener, the fastener comprising:

a shank having a first end and a second end, and

an enlarged end positioned at the second end of the shank, wherein the enlarged end comprises a top surface, a bottom surface, and a plurality of raised ridges extending across the top surface, the plurality of raised ridges configured to penetrate a surface layer of a mounting rail; and

an electrically-conducting washer, the washer comprising:

a top washer surface,

a bottom washer surface,

a first side portion,

a second side portion, wherein the second side portion is opposite the first side portion,

a first downturned spacer member extending downwardly from a central portion of the first side portion,

a second downturned spacer member extending downwardly from a central portion of the second side portion, wherein the first downturned spacer member and the second downturned spacer member are configured to act as spacers between a pair of metallic mounting frames,
