Abstract

A surgical stapling apparatus (stapler) is provided. The stapler includes a housing, elongated member, and a reload. A cartridge is configured to selectively couple to a first jaw member of the reload and includes one or more resilient members thereon. An anvil operably supported on a second jaw member of the reload is configured to compress one or more fasteners ejected from the cartridge. The anvil includes one or more locking members thereon. A knife is configured to translate through the cartridge and anvil when the first and second jaw members are in a closed configuration. Engagement between the knife and the resilient member(s) causes the resilient member(s) to move from an initial configuration that allows the knife to travel distally past the locking member(s) to a final configuration that allows the locking member(s) to engage the knife.

Claims (31)

1. A surgical apparatus, comprising:

an elongated member defining a longitudinal axis;

a jaw member disposed adjacent a distal end of the elongated member;

a drive member disposed at least partially within the elongated member and configured to move longitudinally relative to the elongated member, the drive member including a blocking portion; and

a latch including a locking member, the latch being movable from a blocking position where a portion of the locking member engages the blocking portion of the drive member and prevents distal translation of the drive member relative to the latch, to a non-blocking position where the portion of the locking member is free from contact with the blocking portion of the drive member and allows distal translation of the drive member relative to the latch.

2. The surgical apparatus according to claim 1 , further including a cartridge selectively engageable with the jaw member, wherein engagement between the cartridge and the jaw member causes the latch to move from the blocking position to the non-blocking position.

3. The surgical apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the first leg of the latch is parallel to the longitudinal axis when the latch is in the blocking position.

4. The surgical apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the first leg of the latch is parallel to the longitudinal axis when the latch is in the non-blocking position.

5. The surgical apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the locking member of the latch is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis when the latch is in the blocking position.

6. The surgical apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the locking member of the latch is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis when the latch is in the non-blocking position.

7. The surgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the latch includes a first leg extending from the locking member in a first direction, and a second leg extending from the locking member in the first direction, wherein a portion of the drive member is movable between the first leg of the latch and the second leg of the latch.

8. The surgical apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the latch includes a first lateral extension extending perpendicularly from the first leg.

9. The surgical apparatus according to claim 8 , further including a biasing element disposed in mechanical cooperation with the first lateral extension of the latch and configured to bias the latch toward the blocking position.

10. The surgical apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the biasing element is disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis.

11. The surgical apparatus according to claim 10 , wherein the biasing element is a compression spring.

12. The surgical apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the blocking portion of the drive member includes a surface that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

13. A lockout mechanism for use with a surgical apparatus having a jaw member, and a cartridge assembly, the lockout mechanism comprising:

a drive member including a blocking portion; and

a latch including a locking member, a first leg extending from the locking member in a first direction, and a second leg extending from the locking member in the first direction, the latch being pivotable from a blocking position where a portion of the locking member contacts the blocking portion of the drive member and prevents distal translation of the drive member relative to the latch, to a non-blocking position where the portion of the locking member is free from contact with the blocking portion of the drive member and allows distal translation of the drive member relative to the latch.

14. The lockout mechanism according to claim 13 , wherein a portion of the drive member is movable between the first leg of the latch and the second leg of the latch.

15. The lockout mechanism according to claim 13 , further including a biasing element disposed in mechanical cooperation with the a lateral extension of the latch and configured to bias the latch toward the blocking position.

16. The lockout mechanism according to claim 13 , wherein the drive member is movable along a longitudinal axis, wherein the first leg of the latch is parallel to the longitudinal axis when the latch is in the blocking position, and wherein the first leg of the latch is parallel to the longitudinal axis when the latch is in the non-blocking position.

17. A loading unit, comprising:

a cartridge assembly;

a jaw member configured to receive the cartridge assembly;

a drive member including a blocking portion; and

a latch including a locking member, the latch being pivotable between a blocking position where a portion of the locking member engages the blocking portion of the drive member and prevents distal translation of the drive member relative to the latch, and a non-blocking position where the portion of the locking member is free from contact with the blocking portion of the drive member and allows distal translation of the drive member relative to the latch;

wherein engagement between the cartridge assembly and the jaw member causes the latch to pivot from the blocking position to the non-blocking position.

18. The loading unit according to claim 17 , wherein the latch is biased toward the blocking position.

19. The loading unit according to claim 17 , wherein the latch includes a first leg extending from the locking member in a first direction, and a second leg extending from the locking member in the first direction, wherein a portion of the drive member is movable between the first leg of the latch and the second leg of the latch when the latch is in the non-blocking position.

20. The loading unit according to claim 19 , wherein the blocking portion of the drive member includes a wall oriented in a second direction, wherein the second direction is perpendicular to the first direction.
