Abstract

Disclosed is a system for storage management comprising: receiving capacity information within a predetermined time period from a plurality of storage in a first appliance pool and a second appliance pool, each having a plurality of storage systems; tracking a first capacity limit of the first storage system in the first appliance pool based on the capacity information; performing a first capacity prediction of the first storage system based on the tacked result of the first storage system, wherein the first capacity prediction indicating when the first storage system will be out of space based on the capacity information and the tracked result; generating a first recommendation indicating when an extra capacity of the first storage system should be added based on one or more attributes including the first capacity prediction; and presenting the first recommendation with one or more options.

presenting, by the server to the user, the second recommendation with one or more options including adding the one or more storage systems.

3. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the one or more attributes include capacity predictions of all storage systems in the first appliance pool.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the one or more attributes include an estimated capacity needed.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the one or more properties include replication, encryption, or a combination thereof.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising;

displaying, by the server to the user, the fourth recommendation with one or more options including migrating the first M-tree in the first storage system to the second storage system in the first appliance pool.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the one or more attributes include the tracked result of the first capacity limit of the first storage system, one or more properties, stream counts used by the first M-tree, a network bandwidth requirement, a timing of backups, a resource availability, content overlap between the first M-tree on the first storage system and the second storage system.

8. A non-transitory machine-readable medium having instructions stored therein, which when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations, the operations comprising:

receiving, by a server, capacity information within a predetermined time period from a plurality of storage in a first appliance pool and a second appliance pool, each having a plurality of storage systems, wherein the first appliance pool includes a first storage system and a second storage system;

tracking, by the server, a first capacity limit of the first storage system in the first appliance pool based on the capacity information;

performing, by the server, a first capacity prediction of the first storage system based on a tracked result of the first capacity limit of the first storage system, wherein the first capacity prediction indicating when the first storage system will be out of space based on the capacity information and the tracked result of the first capacity limit of the first storage system;

generating, by the server, a first recommendation indicating when an extra capacity of the first storage system should be added based on one or more attributes including the first capacity prediction;

presenting, by the server to a user, the first recommendation with one or more options;

receiving, by the server, a request from the user to create a new M-tree in the first appliance pool; and

determining, by the server, a target storage system within the first appliance pool to create the new M-tree based on the one or more attributes including a backup schedule and one or more properties needed including retention lock.

9. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

in response to determining that all storage systems in the first appliance pool are approaching their maximum capacity, generating, by the server, a second recommendation including an alert to ask a user to add one or more storage systems; and

presenting, by the server to the user, the second recommendation with one or more options including adding the one or more storage systems.

10. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 8 ,

wherein the one or more attributes include capacity predictions of all storage systems in the first appliance pool.

11. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the one or more attributes include an estimated capacity needed.

12. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the one or more properties include replication, encryption, or a combination thereof.

13. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise;

generating, by the server, a fourth recommendation indicating a first M-tree in the first storage system should migrate to the second storage system within the first appliance pool based on the one or more attributes including the first capacity prediction; and

displaying, by the server to the user, the fourth recommendation with one or more options including migrating the first M-tree in the first storage system to the second storage system in the first appliance pool.

14. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the one or more attributes include the tracked result of the first capacity limit of the first storage system, one or more properties, stream counts used by the first M-tree, a network bandwidth requirement, a timing of backups, a resource availability, content overlap between the first M-tree on the first storage system and the second storage system.
