Abstract

The present invention provides a four-sided scanning system for vehicles that uses a combination of backscatter and transmission based X-ray imaging to achieve material discrimination. In one embodiment, the system is designed as a mobile, drive-through system, which can be folded and stowed in a truck and can be conveniently deployed at any place when required.

a second set of backscatter detectors disposed at least partially within the second plane and configured to receive the second X-rays scattered from the object as it moves through the inspection area;

a third X-ray source positioned within a horizontal base along the direction of travel and configured to generate third X-rays into the inspection area and toward the object;

a third set of backscatter detectors positioned within the horizontal base and configured to receive the third X-rays scattered from the object as it travels through the inspection area, wherein an operation of the first X-ray source and the second X-ray source are synchronized; and

a controller configured to execute programmatic instructions that, when executed, receive data from the first set of backscatter detectors, receive data from the second set of backscatter detectors, receive data from the third set of backscatter detectors and generate one or more images.

2. The X-ray scanning system of claim 1 , wherein the first X-rays, the second X-rays, and the third X-rays each comprise a range of energies, ranging from less than 10 keV to 2 MeV.

10. The X-ray scanning system of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to temporally synchronize a readout of data from the second set of backscatter detectors with a location of a second pencil beam comprising the second X-rays.

11. The X-ray scanning system of claim 10 , wherein the controller is configured to temporally synchronize a readout of data from the third set of backscatter detectors with a location of a third pencil beam comprising the third X-rays.

12. The X-ray scanning system of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor to measure a speed of the object and wherein the controller is configured to receive data indicative of the speed of the object and modulate a pulse rate of at least one of the first X-ray source, the second X-ray source, or the third X-ray source based on the data indicative of the speed.

13. The X-ray scanning system of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor to measure a speed of the object and wherein the controller is configured to execute a plurality of programmatic instructions that, when executed, cause the controller to receive data indicative of the speed of the object and cause a speed of rotation of a collimator located in at least one of the first X-ray source, second X-ray source, or third X-ray source to modulate based on the data indicative of the speed.

14. The X-ray scanning system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first X-ray source, second X-ray source or third X-ray source comprises a first rotating collimator having a first opening and a second collimator having a second opening and positioned proximate the first rotating collimator, wherein the first opening and the second opening have different angular positions relative to each other, and wherein the first rotating collimator in combination with the second collimator collimate at least one of the first X-rays into a first pencil beam, the second X-rays into a second pencil beam, or the third X-rays into a third pencil beam.
