Abstract

The invention provides environmentally-friendly compositions and methods for reducing the viscosity of crude oil using microorganisms and/or biosurfactants produced by microorganisms.

Claims (15)

1. A method for reducing the viscosity of oil, wherein the method comprises contacting the oil with a composition that comprises a fermentation broth in which a biosurfactant-producing yeast was cultivated, said fermentation broth comprising the biosurfactant-producing yeast in inactive form and/or one or more biosurfactants produced by the yeast; wherein the yeast is selected from Starmerella bombicola, Pseudozyma aphidis, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Pichia sydowiorum, Pichia guilliermondii , and Pichia lynferdii.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the yeast is Wickerhamomyces anomalus.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the yeast is Pichia guilliermondii.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the yeast is Starmerella bombicola.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the yeast is Pseudozyma aphidis.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises a glycolipid biosurfactant selected from sophorolipids (SLPs) and mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs).

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises the one or more biosurfactants without the yeast.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of contacting the composition with oil comprises injecting the composition into a wellbore, flowline, or oil tank.

9. The method of claim 1 , used to improve oil transmission through an oil field pipe line, tank, casing, tubing, rod, pump, and/or wellbore.

10. The method of claim 1 , used to convert a heavy asphalt portion of crude oil into lower molecular weight compounds.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is produced on-site at a distance not more than 50 miles from the site at which it is used.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of subjecting the oil to cavitation.

A method for recovering oil from oil sands comprising applying a composition that comprises a fermentation broth in which a biosurfactant-producing yeast was cultivated, said fermentation broth comprising an inactive biosurfactant-producing yeast and/or one or more biosurfactants produced by the yeast, to the oil sands; allowing the oil to detach from the sands; and piping out the oil.

The method of claim 13 , wherein the method further comprises reducing the viscosity of the oil recovered by applying a composition that comprises a fermentation broth in which a biosurfactant-producing yeast was cultivated, said fermentation broth comprising an inactive biosurfactant-producing yeast and/or one or more biosurfactants produced by the yeast, to the oil, and optionally, subjecting the oil to cavitation.

15. The method, according to claim 13 , wherein the yeast is selected from Starmerella bombicola, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Pichia sydowiorum, Pichia guilliermondii , and Pichia lynferdii ; and the biosurfactant is selected from sophorolipids (SLPs), and mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs).
