Abstract

A system and method for managing a reduction in capacity of a memory sub-system. An example method involving a memory sub-system: detecting a failure of a plurality of memory devices of the set, wherein the failure causes data of the plurality of memory devices to be inaccessible; determining the capacity of the set of memory devices has changed to a reduced capacity; notifying a host system of the reduced capacity, wherein the notifying indicates a set of storage units comprising the data that is inaccessible; recovering the data of the set of storage units from the host system after the failure; and updating the set of memory devices to store the recovered data and to change the capacity to the reduced capacity.

Claims (49)

1. A system comprising:

a set of memory devices comprising a capacity; and

a processing device, operatively coupled with the set of memory devices, to perform operations comprising:

detecting a failure of a plurality of memory devices of the set, wherein the failure causes data of the plurality of memory devices to be inaccessible;

determining the capacity of the set of memory devices has changed to a reduced capacity;

notifying a host system of the reduced capacity, wherein the notifying indicates a set of storage units comprising the data that is inaccessible;

recovering the data of the set of storage units from the host system after the failure; and

updating the set of memory devices to store the recovered data and to change the capacity to the reduced capacity.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the failure of the plurality of memory devices of the set comprises a hardware failure of at least one of a connector, a communication channel, or a die.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the notifying comprises the processing device transmitting a message that indicates to the host system a set of logical blocks that comprises the data that is inaccessible.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the notifying comprises the processing device transmitting a message that indicates to the host system a set of one or more zones that comprise the data that is inaccessible.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system comprises a solid state drive (SSD) and wherein the processing device is a memory controller of the solid state drive.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the recovering further comprises the processing device recovering a portion of the data that is inaccessible using parity data stored on the set of memory devices.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

locking a failed portion of the at least one memory device, wherein the locking comprises a write lock that enables reads by the host system and disables writes by the host system;

providing the host system with recovered data in response to a read request for the failed portion;

deleting data of the at least one memory device; and

generating parity data for the set of memory devices based on the reduced capacity.

8. A method comprising:

detecting a failure of a plurality of memory devices of a set of memory devices, wherein the failure causes data of the plurality of memory devices to be inaccessible;

determining a capacity of the set of memory devices has changed to a reduced capacity;

notifying, by a processing device, a host system of the reduced capacity, wherein the notifying indicates a set of storage units comprising the data that is inaccessible;

recovering the data of the set of storage units from the host system after the failure; and

updating, by the processing device, the set of memory devices to store the recovered data and to change the capacity to the reduced capacity.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the failure of the plurality of memory devices of the set comprises a hardware failure of at least one of a connector, a communication channel, or a die.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the notifying comprises the processing device transmitting a message that indicates to the host system a set of logical blocks that comprises the data that is inaccessible.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the notifying comprises the processing device transmitting a message that indicates to the host system a set of one or more zones that comprise the data that is inaccessible.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the processing device is a memory controller of the solid state drive.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the recovering further comprises the processing device recovering a portion of the data that is inaccessible using parity data stored on the set of memory devices.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

locking a failed portion of at least one memory device of the set, wherein the locking comprises a write lock that enables reads by the host system and disables writes by the host system;

providing the host system with recovered data in response to a read request for the failed portion;

deleting data of the at least one memory device; and

generating parity data for the set of memory devices based on the reduced capacity.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions, which when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to perform operations comprising:

detecting a plurality of failures of a set of memory devices, wherein a first failure causes data of a first memory device to be inaccessible and a second failure causes data of a second memory device to be inaccessible;

determining a capacity of the set of memory devices has changed to a reduced capacity after each of the plurality of failures;

notifying, by a processing device, a host system of the reduced capacity after each of the plurality of failures, wherein the notifying indicates a set of storage units affected by the respective failure;

recovering data of the set of storage units from the host system after each of the plurality of failures; and

updating, after each of the plurality of failures, the set of memory devices to store the recovered data and to reduce the capacity.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the first failure comprises a hardware failure of at least one of a connector, a communication channel, or a die.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the notifying comprises the processing device transmitting a message that indicates to the host system a set of logical blocks that comprises the data of the first memory device that is inaccessible.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the notifying comprises the processing device transmitting a message that indicates to the host system a set of one or more zones that comprise the data of the first memory device that is inaccessible.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the processing device is a memory controller of a solid state drive.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , further comprising:

locking a failed portion of at least one memory device of the set, wherein the locking comprises a write lock that enables reads by the host system and disables writes by the host system;

providing the host system with recovered data in response to a read request for the failed portion;

deleting data of the at least one memory device; and

generating parity data for the set of memory devices based on the reduced capacity.
