Abstract

Methods and apparatus for providing circadian-friendly LED light sources are disclosed. A light source is formed to include a first LED emission (e.g., one or more LEDs emitting a first spectrum) and a second LED emission (e.g., one or more LEDs emitting a second spectrum) wherein the first and second LED emissions are combined in a first ratio and in a second ratio such that while changing from the first ratio to the second ratio the relative circadian stimulation is varied while maintaining a color rendering index above 80.

Claims (17)

1. A backlight for emitting emitted light comprising:

at least a first light emitting circuit and a second light emitting circuit; and

a controller for discretely powering said at least first light emitting circuit and second light emitting circuit in two modes, a low CS mode and a normal mode;

wherein in said normal mode, a first emitted light is emitted, said first emitted light has a first correlated color temperature (CCT), a first illuminance of about 50 lux to about 5000 lux, and a first CS;

wherein in said low CS mode, a second emitted light is emitted, said second emitted light has a second correlated color temperature (CCI), a second illuminance of about 50 lux to about 5000 lux, and a second CS;

wherein said second CS is no greater than about 50% of said first CS; and

wherein said first and second CCTs are at least 2500K.

2. The backlight of claim 1 , wherein said first and second CCTs are about the same.

3. The backlight of claim 1 , wherein said first and second illuminances are about the same.

4. The backlight of claim 1 wherein said second CS is no greater than about 20% of said first CS.

5. The backlight of claim 1 , wherein said first light emitting circuit comprises at least one light-emitting diode or one laser diode emitting having a peak wavelength in a range 380 440 nm, said second light emitting circuit has an emission spectrum having a peak between 500 nm and 550 nm.

6. The backlight of claim 1 , wherein said first light emitting circuit does not emit light with a peak wavelength greater than 440 nm and less than 500 nm.

7. The backlight of claim 1 , wherein said first light emitting circuit has an SPD in a spectral region between 440 nm and 480 nm and a power in the SPD between 440 nm and 480 nm is less than 2% of a power of the SPD between 380 nm and 780 nm.

8. The backlight of claim 1 , wherein said first and second emitted lights each has a CRI Ra higher than 80 and a CRI Ra higher than 0.

9. The backlight of claim 1 , wherein said first and second emitted lights each has a CRI Ra higher than 80.

10. The backlight of claim 1 , wherein said certain first and second CCTs are at least 2700 K, and said first and second emitted lights having a Duv +/−0.01 from the Planckian locus.

11. The backlight of claim 1 , wherein the illuminance is a retinal illuminance.
