Extended buffering determination by a session management function
A session management function (SMF) sends, to an access and mobility management function (AMF), a first message for user plane activation of a wireless device. The first message comprises an identifier of a packet data unit session of the wireless device. A second message is received from the AMF and in response to the wireless device being unreachable. The second message is used to determine an extended buffering time. A third message is sent to a user plane function (UPF). The third message comprises the extended buffering time and indicates buffer downlink data of the wireless device.
1. A method, comprising:
sending, by a session management function (SMF) to an access and mobility management function (AMF), a first message for user plane activation of a wireless device, the first message comprising an identifier of a packet data unit session of the wireless device;
receiving, by the SMF from the AMF and in response to the wireless device being unreachable, a second message to determine an extended buffering time; and
sending, by the SMF to a user plane function (UPF), a third message comprising the extended buffering time and indicating to buffer downlink data of the wireless device.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, by the SMF, the extended buffering time in response to receiving the second message.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first message comprises a subscription permanent identifier.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second message comprises:
the extended buffering time; and
a packet count parameter.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein sending the third message is in response to receiving, by the SMF, the second message, the second message comprising:
the extended buffering time; and
a packet count parameter.
6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving, by the SMF from the AMF, an indication of wireless device reachability.
7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising sending, by the SMF to the wireless device via the AMF, the downlink data.
8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, by the SMF, a second data buffer expiration time parameter based on the extended buffering time.
9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising retaining, by the SMF, the second data buffer expiration time parameter.
10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising receiving, by the SMF from the UPF, the downlink data.
11. A apparatus, comprising:
one or more processors; and
memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause a session management function (SMF) to:
send, to an access and mobility management function (AMF), a first message for user plane activation of a wireless device, the first message comprising an identifier of a packet data unit session of the wireless device;
receive, from the AMF and in response to the wireless device being unreachable, a second message to determine an extended buffering time; and
send, to a user plane function (UPF), a third message comprising the extended buffering time and indicating to buffer downlink data of the wireless device.
12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the SMF to determine the extended buffering time in response to receiving the second message.
13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first message comprises a subscription permanent identifier.
14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the second message comprises:
the extended buffering time; and
a packet count parameter.
15. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein sending the third message is in response to receiving the second message, the second message comprising:
the extended buffering time; and
a packet count parameter.
16. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the SMF to receive, from the AMF, an indication of wireless device reachability.
17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the SMF to send the downlink data to the wireless device via the AMF.
18. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the SMF to determine a second data buffer expiration time parameter based on the extended buffering time.
19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the SMF to retain the second data buffer expiration time parameter.
20. A system, comprising:
a wireless device; and
an apparatus, comprising:
one or more processors; and
memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause a session management function (SMF) to:
send, to an access and mobility management function (AMF), a first message for user plane activation of the wireless device, the first message comprising an identifier of a packet data unit session of the wireless device;
receive, from the AMF and in response to the wireless device being unreachable, a second message to determine an extended buffering time; and
send, to a user plane function (UPF), a third message comprising the extended buffering time and indicating to buffer downlink data of the wireless device.
