Abstract

A controller for a system of equipment that operate to produce or consume one or more resources includes one or more processing circuits configured to generate a resource balance constraint using a balance between a first amount of each resource and a second amount of each resource. The first amount of each resource includes at least an amount of the resource produced by the equipment. The second amount of each resource includes at least an amount of the resource consumed by the equipment. The one or more processing circuits are configured to perform a control process using the resource balance constraint to determine amounts of each resource to be produced or consumed by the equipment and operate the equipment to produce or consume the amounts of each resource determined by the control process.

Claims (54)

1. A controller for a system of equipment that operate to produce or consume one or more resources, the controller comprising one or more processing circuits configured to:

generate a resource balance constraint using a balance between a first amount of each resource and a second amount of each resource, wherein:

the first amount of each resource comprises at least a sum of an amount of the resource produced by the equipment and an amount of the resource supplied by one or more sources outside the system of equipment, wherein the resource produced by the equipment comprises hot thermal energy, hot water, cold thermal energy, cold water, electricity, or steam; and

the second amount of each resource comprises at least an amount of the resource consumed by the equipment, wherein the resource consumed by the equipment comprises electricity, water, or natural gas;

perform a control process using the resource balance constraint to determine amounts of each resource to be produced or consumed by the equipment; and

send electronic communications from the controller to a building management system configured to cause the equipment to produce or consume the amounts of each resource determined by the control process such that the equipment transforms the electricity, water, or natural gas consumed by the equipment into the hot thermal energy, hot water, cold thermal energy, cold water, electricity, or steam produced by the equipment.

2. The controller of claim 1 , wherein:

each of the one or more sources represents a utility that supplies an input resource to the system of equipment; and

the system of equipment operates to convert the input resource into an output resource.

3. The controller of claim 1 , wherein:

the first amount of each resource further comprises an amount of the resource discharged by one or more storage devices within the system of equipment; and

the second amount of each resource further comprises an amount of the resource charged into the one or more storage devices within the system of equipment.

4. The controller of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to generate the resource balance constraint using a model of the system of equipment that comprises connections between the equipment and defines which of the equipment receive input resources from other equipment within the system of equipment and which of the equipment provide output resources to other equipment within the system of equipment.

5. A controller for a system of equipment that operate to produce or consume one or more resources, the controller comprising one or more processing circuits configured to:

generate a resource balance constraint using a balance between a first amount of each resource and a second amount of each resource, wherein:

the first amount of each resource comprises at least an amount of the resource produced by the equipment, wherein the resource produced by the equipment comprises hot thermal energy, hot water, cold thermal energy, cold water, electricity, or steam; and

the second amount of each resource comprises a sum of an amount of the resource consumed by the equipment and an amount of the resource consumed by one or more sinks outside the system of equipment, wherein the resource consumed by the equipment comprises electricity, water, or natural gas;

perform a control process using the resource balance constraint to determine amounts of each resource to be produced or consumed by the equipment; and

send electronic communications from the controller to a building management system configured to cause the equipment to produce or consume the amounts of each resource determined by the control process such that the equipment transforms the electricity, water, or natural gas consumed by the equipment into the hot thermal energy, hot water, cold thermal energy, cold water, electricity, or steam produced by the equipment.

6. The controller of claim 5 , wherein:

each of the one or more sinks represents a consumer of an output resource produced by the system of equipment; and

the system of equipment operates to convert an input resource into the output resource.

7. The controller of claim 5 , wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to generate the resource balance constraint using a model of the system of equipment that comprises connections between the equipment and defines which of the equipment receive input resources from other equipment within the system of equipment and which of the equipment provide output resources to other equipment within the system of equipment.

8. A method for controlling a system of equipment that operate to produce or consume one or more resources, the method comprising:

electronically controlling the system of equipment by operating one or more of a heater subplant, a chiller subplant, a recovery chiller subplant, a cooling tower subplant, a steam subplant, or an electricity subplant of the system of equipment;

generating a resource balance constraint using a balance between a first amount of each resource and a second amount of each resource, wherein:

the first amount of each resource comprises at least a sum of an amount of the resource produced by the equipment and an amount of the resource supplied by one or more sources outside the system of equipment; and

the second amount of each resource comprises at least an amount of the resource consumed by the equipment;

performing a control process using the resource balance constraint to determine amounts of each resource to be produced or consumed by the equipment; and

automatically adjusting operation of the one or more of the heater subplant, the chiller subplant, the recovery chiller subplant, the cooling tower subplant, the steam subplant, or the electricity subplant by sending electronic communications from a building management system to the equipment such that the equipment produces or consumes the amounts of each resource determined by the control process.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

each of the one or more sources represents a utility that supplies an input resource to the system of equipment; and

the system of equipment operates to convert the input resource into an output resource.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the first amount of each resource further comprises an amount of the resource discharged by one or more storage devices within the system of equipment; and

the second amount of each resource further comprises an amount of the resource charged into the one or more storage devices within the system of equipment.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the resource balance constraint is generated using a model of the system of equipment that comprises connections between the equipment and defines which of the equipment receive input resources from other equipment within the system of equipment and which of the equipment provide output resources to other equipment within the system of equipment.

12. A method for controlling a system of equipment that operate to produce or consume one or more resources, the system of equipment comprising building equipment, the method comprising:

producing or consuming, by the system of equipment in accordance with automated electronic control, target amounts of the one or more resources, the one or more resources comprising hot thermal energy, hot water, cold thermal energy, cold water, electricity, natural gas, water, or steam; and

automatically providing the target amounts via the automated electronic control by:

generating a resource balance constraint using a balance between a first amount of each resource and a second amount of each resource, wherein:

the first amount of each resource comprises at least a sum of an amount of the resource supplied by one or more sources outside the system of equipment and an amount of the resource produced by the equipment; and

the second amount of each resource comprises at least an amount of the resource consumed by one or more sinks outside the system of equipment; and

performing a control process using the resource balance constraint to determine the target amounts of each resource to be produced or consumed by the equipment.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein:

each of the one or more sources represents a utility that supplies an input resource to the system of equipment;

each of the one or more sinks represents a consumer of an output resource produced by the system of equipment; and

the system of equipment operates to convert the input resource into the output resource.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein:

the first amount of each resource further comprises an amount of the resource discharged by one or more storage devices within the system of equipment; and

the second amount of each resource further comprises an amount of the resource charged into the one or more storage devices within the system of equipment.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein:

the resource balance constraint is generated using a model of the system of equipment that comprises connections between the equipment, the one or more sources, and the one or more sinks; and

the model defines which of the equipment receive input resources from the one or more sources and which of the equipment provide output resources to the one or more sinks.
