Abstract

Embodiments of systems and methods for managing an Information Handling System (IHS) using a workspace orchestration system are described. In an illustrative, non-limiting embodiment, an IHS may include computer-executable instructions to, communicate with an operating system (OS) of the IHS to register for receiving one or more event messages, and communicate with the workspace to receive one or more event message subscriptions associated with an application configured in the workspace. The instructions are configured to store the one or more event message subscriptions at a specified location such that, when an event message is received from the OS, and when one the received event message comprises one of the event message subscriptions associated with the application, send the event message to the workspace.

Claims (37)

1. An Information Handling System (IHS) configured to provide a workspace orchestration service for managing deployment of hardware-based workspaces, the IHS comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor, the memory having program instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by the processor, cause the IHS to:

instantiate a hardware-based workspace on a client IHS:

communicate with an Operating System (OS) of the client IHS to register for receiving one or more event messages;

send the one or more event messages to a kernel interface service that forwards the one or more event messages to a kernel of the OS;

communicate with the hardware-based workspace to receive one or more event message subscriptions associated with an application configured in the hardware-based workspace;

store the one or more event message subscriptions at a specified location; and

in response to an event message received from the OS matching at least one of the one or more event message subscriptions associated with the application, send the event message to the hardware-based workspace, wherein the event message indicates a change to a hardware parameter of hardware-based workspace to be implemented in firmware while the hardware-based workspace is running.

2. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the change comprises a network communication setting.

3. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the event message comprises a hardware level event message.

4. The IHS of claim 3 , wherein the hardware level event message comprises an Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) event message.

5. The IHS of claim 3 , wherein the hardware level event message comprises a battery event associated with the IHS.

6. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions, upon execution, cause the IHS to use the kernel interface service to notify the OS of the actions taken by the kernel via the workspace orchestration service.

7. The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the hardware level event message comprises a lid state associated with the IHS.

8. The IHS of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of the workspaces, wherein the program instructions, upon execution, cause the IHS to determine a subset of the plurality of workspaces that are configured to receive the event message, and send the event message to the subset of workspaces.

9. A method, comprising:

instantiate a hardware-based workspace on a client Information Handling System (IHS) communicating with an Operating System (OS) of the client IHS to register for receiving one or more event messages;

sending the one or more event messages to a kernel interface service that forwards the one or more event messages to a kernel of the OS;

communicating with the hardware-based workspace to receive one or more event message subscriptions associated with an application configured in the hardware-based workspace;

storing the one or more event message subscriptions at a specified location; and

in response to an event message received from the OS matching at least one of the one or more event message subscriptions associated with the application, sending the event message to the hardware-based workspace, wherein the event message indicates a change to a hardware parameter of hardware-based workspace to be implemented in firmware while the hardware-based workspace is running.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the change comprises a number of processor cores used by the hardware-based workspace.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the event message comprises an hardware level event message, and wherein the workspace comprises a hardware level based workspace.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the hardware level event message comprises an Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) event message.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising using the kernel interface service to notify the OS of the actions taken by the kernel via the workspace orchestration service.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising determining a subset of a plurality of the workspaces that are configured to receive the event message, and sending the event message to the subset of workspaces.

15. A hardware memory device having program instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by a processor of an Information Handling System (IHS), cause the IHS to:

instantiate a hardware-based workspace on a client IHS:

communicate with an Operating System (OS) of the client IHS to register for receiving one or more event messages;

send the one or more event messages to a kernel interface service that forwards the one or more event messages to a kernel of the OS;

communicate with the hardware-based workspace to receive one or more event message subscriptions associated with an application configured in the hardware-based workspace;

store the one or more event message subscriptions at a specified location; and

in response to an event message received from the OS comprising at least one of the one or more event message subscriptions associated with the application, send the event message to the hardware-based workspace, wherein the event message indicates a change to a hardware parameter of hardware-based workspace to be implemented in firmware while the hardware-based workspace is running.

16. The hardware memory device of claim 15 , wherein the change comprises a memory allocation.

17. The hardware memory device of claim 15 , wherein the event message comprises an hardware level event message.

18. The hardware memory device of claim 15 , wherein the program instructions, upon execution by the processor, further cause the IHS to use the kernel interface service to notify the OS of the actions taken by the kernel via a workspace orchestration service.
