Abstract

Various surgical hubs and data stripping methods are disclosed. The surgical hub comprises a processor and a memory coupled to the processor. The memory stores instructions executable by the processor to interrogate a modular device coupled to the processor via a modular communication hub. The modular device is a source of data sets that include patient identity data and surgical procedure data. The processor also executes instructions to: receive a data set from the modular device; discard the patient identity data and any portion of the surgical procedure data that identifies the patient from the data set; extract anonymous data from the data set and create an anonymized data set; and configure operation of the surgical hub or the modular device based on the anonymized data set.

Claims (59)

1. A surgical system configured to enhance a patient's privacy during a surgical procedure, the surgical system comprising:

a surgical instrument configured for use during the surgical procedure;

a database configured to store a medical record associated with the patient; and

a surgical hub configured to be communicably coupled to the surgical instrument and the database, wherein the surgical hub comprises a memory and a control circuit configured to:

receive the medical record from the database;

determine that the medical record comprises medical information and personal information associated with the patient;

remove the medical information from the medical record;

generate an anonymous data file that exclusively comprises the medical information;

generate a recommended action for the surgical instrument based, at least in part, on the anonymous data file;

temporarily store the personal information in the memory;

generate a reassembled data file comprising the personal information temporarily stored in the memory and the medical information; and

delete the personal information temporarily stored in the memory of the surgical hub.

The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the database is further configured to store a key that uniquely identifies the medical record, wherein the control circuit is further configured to receive the key from the database, and wherein the generation of the reassembled data file is based, at least in part, on the key.

3. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to:

receive a signal from the surgical instrument, wherein the signal is associated with information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure;

determine that the information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure comprises personal patient information and medical patient information associated with the patient based, at least in part, on the received signal;

remove the medical patient information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure from the personal patient information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure; and

modify the anonymous data file to further comprise the medical patient information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure.

4. The surgical system of claim 3 , wherein the medical patient information generated by the surgical instrument comprises a surgical outcome.

5. The surgical system of claim 4 , further comprising a cloud-based analytics subsystem configured to analyze surgical outcome data, wherein the control circuit is further configured to transmit the anonymous data file to the cloud-based analytics subsystem.

The surgical system of claim 5 , wherein the cloud-based analytics subsystem is separated from the surgical hub and the database by a hospital data barrier, and wherein data located outside the hospital data barrier exclusively comprises medical information associated with the patient to maintain anonymity.

The surgical system of claim 6 , wherein the database is further configured to store a key that uniquely identifies the medical record, wherein the control circuit is further configured to access the medical record, and wherein accessing the medical record is based, at least in part, on the key.

8. The surgical system of claim 7 , wherein the memory is configured to locally store the key in an encrypted format.

9. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the recommended action comprises a suggested configuration for the surgical instrument.

10. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the recommended action comprises a suggested operation for the surgical instrument.

11. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the medical information comprises at least one of: a diagnosis associated with the patient, a pre-operative treatment associated with the patient, or a patient parameter that alone cannot be used to ascertain an identity of the patient, or combinations thereof.

12. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the personal information comprises at least one of: an age of the patient, an employer of the patient, a body mass index of the patient, or a patient parameter that alone can be used to ascertain an identity of the patient, or combinations thereof.

13. A surgical hub configured to enhance a patient's privacy during a surgical procedure, wherein the surgical hub is configured to be communicably coupled to a surgical instrument and a database configured to store a medical record associated with the patient, the surgical hub comprising:

a memory; and

a control circuit configured to:

receive the medical record from the database;

determine that the medical record comprises medical information and personal information associated with the patient;

remove the medical information from the medical record;

generate an anonymous data file that exclusively comprises the medical information;

generate a recommended action for the surgical instrument based, at least in part, on the anonymous data file;

temporarily store the personal information in the memory;

generate a reassembled data file comprising the personal information temporarily stored in the memory and the medical information; and

delete the personal information temporarily stored in the memory of the surgical hub.

14. The surgical hub of claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is further configured to:

receive a signal from the surgical instrument, wherein the signal is associated with information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure;

determine that the information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure comprises personal patient information and medical patient information associated with the patient based, at least in part, on the received signal;

remove the medical patient information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure from the personal patient information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure; and

modify the anonymous data file to further comprise the medical patient information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure.

15. The surgical hub of claim 13 , further comprising a cloud-based analytics subsystem configured to analyze surgical outcome data, wherein the control circuit is further configured to transmit the anonymous data file to the cloud-based analytics subsystem.

16. The surgical hub of claim 15 , wherein the cloud-based analytics subsystem is separated from the surgical hub by a hospital data barrier, and wherein data located outside the hospital data barrier exclusively comprises medical information associated with the patient to maintain anonymity.

17. A method of enhancing a patient's privacy during a surgical procedure, wherein data external to a data barrier is anonymous, and wherein the surgical procedure comprises a surgical hub configured to be communicably coupled to a database configured to store a medical record and a surgical instrument, the method comprising:

retrieving a medical record from the database;

determining that the medical record comprises medical information and personal information associated with the patient;

removing the medical information from the medical record;

generating an anonymous data file that exclusively comprises the medical information;

generating a recommended action for the surgical instrument based, at least in part, on the anonymous data file;

storing, temporarily, the personal information in the surgical hub;

generating a reassembled data file comprising the personal information temporarily stored in the surgical hub and the medical information; and

deleting the personal information temporarily stored in the surgical hub.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

receiving a signal from the surgical instrument, wherein the signal is associated with information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure;

determining that the information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure comprises personal patient information and medical patient information associated with the patient based, at least in part, on the received signal;

removing the medical patient information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure from the personal patient information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure; and

modifying the anonymous data file to further comprise the medical patient information generated by the surgical instrument during the surgical procedure.
