Abstract

The present aspects relate to techniques of timing synchronization of audio and video (AV) data in a network. In particular, the techniques for a AV master to distribute AV data encoded with one or more time markers to a plurality of processing nodes. The one or more time markers may be indexed to a precision time protocol (PTP) time stamp used as a time reference. In one technique, the nodes extract the time markers to determine an offset value that is applied to a PLL to synchronize AV data packets at a distribution node or a processing node. In another technique the distribution node or the processing node determines the worst case path, which corresponds to a system offset value. The distribution node then reports the system offset value to the AV master, which in turn adjusts the phase based on the report.

Claims (42)

1. A media distribution system for synchronizing audio/video (AV) data for media playout, the system comprising:

a data encoder configured to encode AV data of a plurality of data streams to each have timestamps indexed to a universal timestamp as a time reference for a media distribution network; and

a master controller configured to:

control transmission of the plurality of data streams across a plurality of network paths to a plurality of network nodes in the media distribution network;

receive offset delay reports from the plurality of network nodes that each indicate respective delays of the plurality of network paths that are calculated based on the timestamps encoded in the respective data streams of the plurality of data streams;

calculate, based on the offset delay reports, a system offset delay value that corresponds to a worst case absolute phase offset value that is determined from a longest delay of the plurality of network paths; and

send a system offset broadcast to each of the plurality of network nodes to set respective buffers therein, with the system offset broadcast being based on the system offset delay value, such that each of the plurality of network nodes allocates sufficient memory buffer space to accommodate synching and tuning of the plurality of data streams before the media playout.

2. The media distribution system according to claim 1 , wherein the master controller is further configured to query each of the plurality of network nodes to receive the respective offset delay reports.

3. The media distribution system according to claim 1 , wherein the master controller is further configured to adjust a phase of at least one of the plurality of data streams based on the calculated system offset delay value.

4. The media distribution system according to claim 1 , wherein the master controller is further configured to determine the worst case absolute phase offset value based on a largest absolute phase offset value determined by one of the plurality of network nodes.

The media distribution system according to claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of network nodes determines a phase of the AV data included in the data stream received by the respective network node and aligns the phase of the AV data with the time reference to determine a phase offset that is included in the respective offset delay report.

The media distribution system of claim 1 , wherein the master controller include a processor configured to execute instructions stored in memory to control transmission of the plurality of data streams, calculate the system offset delay value, and send the system offset broadcast to each of the plurality of network nodes to set the respective buffers therein.

7. The media distribution system of claim 1 , wherein the system offset broadcast sets the respective buffers to allocate the sufficient memory buffer space and prevent overflow of the media stream received by the respective network node.

8. The media distribution system according to claim 1 , wherein the universal timestamp comprises a precision time protocol (PTP) timestamp.

9. A media distribution system for synchronizing audio/video (AV) data for media playout, the system comprising:

memory; and

a master controller having a processor configured to execute instructions stored in the memory that:

control transmission of a plurality of data streams having the AV data across a plurality of network paths to a plurality of network nodes in a media distribution network;

receive offset delay data from the plurality of network nodes that each indicate respective delays of the plurality of network paths that are calculated based on timestamps encoded in the respective data streams of the plurality of data streams;

calculate, based on the offset delay data, a system offset delay value that corresponds to a worst case absolute phase offset value that is determined from a longest delay of the plurality of network paths; and

send a system offset broadcast to each of the plurality of network nodes to set respective buffers therein, with the system offset broadcast being based on the system offset delay value, such that each of the plurality of network nodes allocates sufficient memory buffer space to accommodate synching and tuning of the plurality of data streams before the media playout.

10. The media distribution system according to claim 9 , further comprising a data encoder configured to encode the AV data of the plurality of data streams to each have timestamps indexed to a universal time stamp as a time reference for the media distribution network.

11. The media distribution system according to claim 10 , wherein the universal timestamp comprises a precision time protocol (PTP) timestamp.

12. The media distribution system according to claim 9 , wherein the processor of the master controller is further configured execute instructions stored in the memory that configure the master controller to query each of the plurality of network nodes to receive the respective offset delay data.

The media distribution system according to claim 9 , wherein the processor of the master controller is further configured execute instructions stored in the memory that configure the master controller to adjust a phase of at least one of the plurality of data streams based on the calculated system offset delay value.

The media distribution system according to claim 9 , wherein the processor of the master controller is further configured execute instructions stored in the memory that configure the master controller to determine the worst case absolute phase offset value based on a largest absolute phase offset value determined by one of the plurality of network nodes.

The media distribution system according to claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of network nodes determines a phase of the AV data included in the data stream received by the respective network node and aligns the phase of the AV data with the time reference to determine a phase offset that is included in the respective offset delay data.

16. The media distribution system according to claim 9 , wherein the system offset broadcast sets the respective buffers to allocate the sufficient memory buffer space and prevent overflow of the media stream received by the respective network node.

17. A media distribution system for synchronizing audio/video (AV) data for media playout, the system comprising:

means for controlling transmission of a plurality of data streams having the AV data across a plurality of network paths to a plurality of network nodes in a media distribution network;

means for receiving offset delay reports from the plurality of network nodes that each indicate respective delays of the plurality of network paths that are calculated based on timestamps encoded in the respective data streams of the plurality of data streams;

means for calculating, based on the offset delay reports, a system offset delay value that corresponds to a worst case absolute phase offset value that is determined from a longest delay of the plurality of network paths; and

means for sending a system offset broadcast to each of the plurality of network nodes to set respective buffers therein, with the system offset broadcast being based on the system offset delay value, such that each of the plurality of network nodes allocates sufficient memory buffer space to accommodate synching and tuning of the plurality of data streams before the media playout.

18. The media distribution system according to claim 17 , further comprising a data encoder configured to encode the AV data of the plurality of data streams to each have timestamps indexed to a universal time stamp as a time reference for the media distribution network.

19. The media distribution system according to claim 18 , wherein the universal timestamp comprises a precision time protocol (PTP) timestamp.

20. The media distribution system according to claim 17 , further comprising means for querying each of the plurality of network nodes to receive the respective offset delay reports.

21. The media distribution system according to claim 17 , further comprising means for adjusting a phase of at least one of the plurality of data streams based on the calculated system offset delay value.

22. The media distribution system according to claim 17 , further comprising means for determining the worst case absolute phase offset value based on a largest absolute phase offset value determined by one of the plurality of network nodes.

23. The media distribution system according to claim 17 , further comprising:

means for determining a phase of the AV data included in the data stream received by the respective network node; and

means for aligning the phase of the AV data with the time reference to determine a phase offset that is included in the respective offset delay report.

24. The media distribution system of claim 17 , wherein the system offset broadcast sets the respective buffers to allocate the sufficient memory buffer space and prevent overflow of the media stream received by the respective network node.
