Abstract

An example method includes displaying, via a visualization device and overlaid on a portion of an anatomy of a patient viewable via the visualization device, a virtual model of the portion of the anatomy obtained from a virtual surgical plan for an orthopedic joint repair surgical procedure to attach a prosthetic to the anatomy; and displaying, via the visualization device and overlaid on the portion of the anatomy, a virtual guide that guides at least one of preparation of the anatomy for attachment of the prosthetic or attachment of the prosthetic to the anatomy.

Claims (39)

1. A method comprising:

storing a virtual surgical plan for an orthopedic surgery, wherein the virtual surgical plan for the orthopedic surgery includes information defining a plurality of steps of the orthopedic surgery and includes information that specifies that a first surgical item is to be used in a specific step of the orthopedic surgery, wherein the plurality of steps defined by the virtual surgical plan include the specific step;

determining, by a processing device, that a surgeon is currently using a second surgical item;

selecting, by the processing device, based on the information in the virtual surgical plan that specifies that the first surgical item is to be used in the specific step and based on the determination that the surgeon is currently using the second surgical item, the first surgical item in a kit that includes a plurality of surgical items, wherein the first surgical item is usable for the specific step of the orthopedic surgery and the plurality of surgical items in the kit includes one or more of surgical tools or surgical implants; and

causing, by the processing device, a mixed reality (MR) visualization device to present virtual information that identifies to a user the first surgical item among the plurality of surgical items as being usable for the specific step of the orthopedic surgery, wherein the virtual information is presented on or adjacent a position of the first surgical item visible via the MR visualization device and the virtual information comprises one or more of a virtual halo, an outline, or highlighting.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual information further comprises one or more of: one or more marks or text.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

causing an MR visualization presented by the MR visualization device to include a first virtual checklist item in a checklist of the steps of the orthopedic surgery, the first virtual checklist item comprising text describing the specific step of the orthopedic surgery;

detecting a command to mark the specific step of the orthopedic surgery complete; and

based on the command:

storing data indicating that the specific step is complete; and

causing the MR visualization device to present a second virtual checklist item in the checklist, the second virtual checklist item comprising text describing another step of the orthopedic surgery;

selecting, based on the virtual surgical plan, a third surgical item in the kit; and

causing the MR visualization device to present virtual information that identifies the selected third surgical item among the plurality of surgical items, wherein the virtual information that identifies the selected third surgical item is presented on or adjacent a position of the selected third surgical item visible through the MR visualization device.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, during performance of the specific step of the orthopedic surgery, verifying that the surgeon is using the first surgical item.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein verifying that the surgeon is using the first surgical item comprises performing visual object detection of the first surgical item with cameras of the MR visualization device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing the MR visualization device to present virtual information to indicate previously used surgical items in the plurality of surgical items while the plurality of surgical items are positioned in the kit, wherein the kit is a tray or box.

7. A mixed reality system comprising:

a memory that stores at least a portion of a virtual surgical plan for an orthopedic surgery, wherein the virtual surgical plan for the orthopedic surgery includes information defining a plurality of steps of the orthopedic surgery and includes information that specifies that a first surgical item is to be used in a specific step of the orthopedic surgery, wherein the plurality of steps defined by the virtual surgical plan include the specific step;

one or more processing devices configured to:

determine that a surgeon is currently using a second surgical item; and

select, based on the information in the virtual surgical plan that specifies that the first surgical item is to be used in the specific step and based on the determination that the surgeon is currently using the second surgical item, the first surgical item in a kit that includes a plurality of surgical items, wherein the first surgical item is usable for the specific step of the orthopedic surgery and the plurality of surgical items in the kit include one or more of surgical tools or surgical implants; and

a Mixed Reality (MR) visualization device for wear by a user, wherein the MR visualization device is configured to present virtual information that identifies to the user the first surgical item among the plurality of surgical items as being usable for the specific step of the orthopedic surgery, wherein the virtual information is presented on or adjacent a position of the first surgical item visible through the MR visualization device and the virtual information comprises one or more of a virtual halo, an outline, or highlighting.

8. The mixed reality system of claim 7 , wherein the virtual information further comprises one or more of: one or more marks or text.

9. The mixed reality system of claim 7 , wherein the MR visualization device is configured to include a first virtual checklist item in a checklist of the steps of the orthopedic surgery in an MR visualization presented by the MR visualization device, the first virtual checklist item comprising text describing the specific step of the orthopedic surgery, and

the one or more processing devices are configured to:

detect a command to mark the specific step of the orthopedic surgery complete; and

based on the command:

store data indicating that the specific step is complete; and

cause the MR visualization device to present a second virtual checklist item in the checklist, the second virtual checklist item comprising text describing another step of the orthopedic surgery;

select, based on the virtual surgical plan, a third surgical item in the kit; and

cause the MR visualization device to present virtual information that identifies the selected third surgical item among the plurality of surgical items, wherein the virtual information that identifies the selected third surgical item is presented on or adjacent a position of the selected third surgical item visible through the MR visualization device.

10. The mixed reality system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more processing devices are further configured to verify, during performance of the specific step of the orthopedic surgery, that the surgeon is using the first surgical item.

11. The mixed reality system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processing devices are configured to, as part of verifying that the surgeon is using the first surgical item, perform visual object detection of the first surgical item with cameras of the MR visualization device.

12. The mixed reality system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more processing devices are further configured to cause the MR visualization device to present virtual information to indicate previously used surgical items in the plurality of surgical items while the plurality of surgical items are positioned in the kit, wherein the kit is a tray or box.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause one or more processing devices to:

store a virtual surgical plan for an orthopedic surgery, wherein the virtual surgical plan for the orthopedic surgery includes information defining a plurality of steps of the orthopedic surgery and includes information that specifies that a first surgical item is to be used in a specific step of the orthopedic surgery, wherein the plurality of steps defined by the virtual surgical plan include the specific step;

select, based on the information in the virtual surgical plan that specifies that the first surgical item is to be used in the specific step and based on a determination that a surgeon is currently using a second surgical item, the first surgical item in a kit that includes a plurality of surgical items, wherein the first surgical item is usable for the specific step of the orthopedic surgery and the plurality of surgical items in the kit includes one or more of surgical tools or surgical implants; and

cause a mixed reality (MR) visualization device to present virtual information that identifies to a user the first surgical item among the plurality of surgical items as being usable for the specific step of the orthopedic surgery, wherein the virtual information is presented on or adjacent a position of the first surgical item visible through the MR visualization device and the virtual information comprises one or more of a virtual halo, an outline, or highlighting.
