Abstract

In one aspect, a method includes determining that a content-presentation device has tuned to a channel while a content-distribution system is transmitting, on the channel, a first content segment. The method also includes using historical content consumption data associated with the content-presentation device to determine that an end-user associated with the content-presentation device intends to watch a second content segment that the content-distribution system is scheduled to transmit after the first content segment, determining that the end-user associated with the content-presentation device is not interested in watching a remainder of the first content segment, and, in response to determining that the end-user intends to watch the second content segment and is not interested in watching the remainder of the first content segment, performing an action that facilitates the content-presentation device presenting supplemental content during at least a portion of the remainder of the first content segment.

Claims (50)

1 . A method comprising:

determining that a content-presentation device has tuned to a channel while a content-distribution system is transmitting, on the channel, a first content segment of a linear sequence of content, wherein the content-distribution system is scheduled to transmit a second content segment of the linear sequence of content after the first content segment;

in response to determining that the content-presentation device has tuned to the channel while the content-distribution system is transmitting the first content segment, and while the content-presentation device is receiving the first content segment:

using historical content consumption data associated with the content-presentation device to determine that an end-user associated with the content-presentation device intends to watch the second content segment, and

determining that the end-user associated with the content-presentation device is not interested in watching a remainder of the first content segment; and

in response to determining, while the content-presentation device is receiving the first content segment, that the end-user intends to watch the second content segment and is not interested in watching the remainder of the first content segment, performing an action that facilitates the content-presentation device presenting supplemental content during at least a portion of the remainder of the first content segment.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second content segment sequentially follows the first content segment in the linear sequence of content, and

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein using the historical content consumption data associated with the content-presentation device to determine that the end-user associated with the content-presentation device intends to watch the second content segment comprises:

determining that the historical content consumption data indicates that the end-user has viewed at least a threshold number of content segments related to the second content segment.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the end-user associated with the content-presentation device is not interested in watching the remainder of the first content segment comprises:

determining a remaining time period until a start-time at which the second content segment is scheduled to be received by the content-presentation device, and

determining that the remaining time period is less than a predefined time period,

in response to determining that the remaining time period is less than the predefined time period, determining that the end-user associated with the content-presentation device is not interested in watching the remainder of the first content segment.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the predefined time period is five minutes until the start-time at which the second content segment is scheduled to be received by the content-presentation device.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the linear sequence of content comprises, in sequential order, the first content segment, an advertisement block comprising one or more advertisement segments, and the second content segment, and

wherein performing the action that facilitates the content-presentation device presenting the supplemental content during at least the portion of the remaining time period of the first content segment comprises performing an action that facilitates the content-presentation device presenting the supplemental content during at least the portion of the remaining time period of the first content segment such that the content-presentation device stops presenting the supplemental content at approximately the same time as a start-time at which the advertisement block is scheduled to be received by the content-presentation device.

10 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, having stored thereon program instructions that, upon execution by a processor, cause performance of a set of operations comprising:

determining that a content-presentation device has tuned to a channel while a content-distribution system is transmitting, on the channel, a first content segment of a linear sequence of content, wherein the content-distribution system is scheduled to transmit a second content segment of the linear sequence of content after the first content segment;

in response to determining that the content-presentation device has tuned to the channel while the content-distribution system is transmitting the first content segment, and while the content-presentation device is receiving the first content segment:

using historical content consumption data associated with the content-presentation device to determine that an end-user associated with the content-presentation device intends to watch the second content segment, and

determining that the end-user associated with the content-presentation device is not interested in watching a remainder of the first content segment; and

in response to determining, while the content-presentation device is receiving the first content segment, that the end-user intends to watch the second content segment and is not interested in watching the remainder of the first content segment, performing an action that facilitates the content-presentation device presenting supplemental content during at least a portion of the remainder of the first content segment.

11 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the second content segment sequentially follows the first content segment in the linear sequence of content, and

wherein performing the action that facilitates the content-presentation device presenting the supplemental content during at least the portion of the remainder of the first content segment comprises performing an action that facilitates the content-presentation device modifying at least a portion of the remainder of the first content segment with the supplemental content.

12 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein performing the action that facilitates the content-presentation device modifying at least the portion of the remainder of the first content segment with the supplemental content comprises performing an action that facilitates the content-presentation device replacing at least the portion of the remainder of the first content segment with the supplemental content.

13 .
