Abstract

A fully automated supply chain, in combination with tracking technology and the unified commerce engine (UCE) enables the exact location of every item (or each) to be tracked from the manufacturer's facility to a customer's bag. Eaches are tracked using the UCE as they move within and between one or more regional distribution centers and a market distribution center.

Claims (44)

1. A system for tracking inventory within an automated order fulfillment center, comprising:

a workstation configured to receive first and second totes, at least the first tote comprising subtotes having the inventory;

a workstation robot at the workstation configured to:

identify a subtote of the subtotes within the first tote having inventory to be transferred, and

transfer the subtote from the first tote to the second tote; and

a computer-implemented commerce engine configured to track the inventory, the commerce engine storing one or more identifiers of the subtote and the second tote, and storing an association between the subtote and the second tote in the commerce engine indicating the subtote is stored in the second tote.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor on the workstation robot or the workstation for reading the one or more identifiers on the subtotes.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the first tote comprises a product tote and the second tote comprises an order tote, the workstation robot transferring the subtotes from the product tote to the order tote, the order tote including the subtotes used to fulfill an order for eaches contained in the subtotes.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first tote comprises a first product tote and the second tote comprises a second product tote, the workstation robot transferring the subtotes from the first product tote to the second product tote in order to consolidate subtotes in the second product tote.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the workstation robot comprises a robotic arm configured to move with six degrees of freedom.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the workstation robot is a Cartesian pick and place robot with a gripper configured to move along orthogonal X, Y and Z axes.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of mobile robots for transferring totes including the first and second totes to and from the workstation.

8. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a storage rack of storage shelves, a mobile robot of the plurality of mobile robots transferring the first tote from a storage shelf of the storage shelves to the workstation.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the commerce engine is further configured to track and store data associated with the transfer of the first tote from the storage shelf to the workstation.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of mobile robots transfer the second tote containing the subtotes away from the workstation to a storage location.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the commerce engine is further configured to track and store data associated with the transfer of the second tote from the workstation to the storage location.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the storage location is a portable rack configured to be placed within a transport vehicle to transport the second tote away from the order fulfillment center.

13. A system for tracking inventory within an automated order fulfillment center, comprising:

a workstation configured to receive one of a pallet, a case and a first tote, and the workstation configured to receive a second tote, the pallet, the case or the first tote comprising the inventory of multiple stock keeping units (SKUs) and the second tote comprising subtotes;

a workstation robot at the workstation configured to:

identify inventory of one SKU from the multiple SKUs in the pallet, the case or the first tote, and

transfer the identified inventory of the selected SKU from the pallet, the case or the first tote to a subtote of the subtotes in the second tote; and

a computer-implemented commerce engine configured to track the inventory, the commerce engine storing one or more identifiers of the subtotes and the second tote, and storing an association between the subtotes and the second tote in the commerce engine indicating the subtotes are stored in the second tote.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the inventory transferred and tracked in the subtotes is comprised of different SKUs.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the commerce engine is further configured to assign a new identifier to the subtotes including the inventory of the one or more SKUs.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the commerce engine is further configured to store one or more identifiers of the pallet, the case or the first tote holding the inventory prior to the inventory being transferred into the subtotes.

The system of claim 13 , wherein the pallet, the case or the first tote comprise a product tote and the second tote comprises an order tote, the workstation robot transferring the subtotes from the product tote to the order tote, the order tote including the subtotes used to fulfill an order for the inventory contained in the subtotes.

The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more of the pallet, the case or the first tote comprise a first product tote and the second tote comprises a second product tote, the workstation robot transferring the subtotes from the first product tote to the second product tote in order to consolidate subtotes in the second product tote.

19. The system of claim 13 , wherein the workstation robot comprises a robotic arm configured to move with six degrees of freedom.

20. The system of claim 13 , wherein the workstation robot is a Cartesian pick and place robot with a gripper configured to move along orthogonal X, Y and Z axes.

21. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a plurality of mobile robots for transferring totes including the second tote to and from the workstation.

22. The system of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of mobile robots transfer the second tote containing the subtotes away from the workstation to a storage location.

23. The system of claim 22 , wherein the commerce engine is further configured to track and store data associated with the transfer of the second tote from the workstation to the storage location.

24. The system of claim 22 , wherein the storage location is a portable rack configured to be placed within a transport vehicle to transport the second tote away from the order fulfillment center.

25. A system for tracking inventory within an automated order fulfillment center, comprising:

a workstation configured to receive first and second totes, at least the first tote comprising subtotes having the inventory;

a workstation robot at the workstation configured to:

identify a subtote of the subtotes within the first tote having inventory to be transferred, and

transfer the subtote from the first tote to the second tote;

a plurality of mobile robots configured to transport the first and second totes to and from the workstation, wherein the workstation is configured to accommodate the plurality of mobile robots; and

a computer-implemented commerce engine configured to track the inventory, the commerce engine storing one or more identifiers of the subtote and the second tote, and storing an association between the subtote and the second tote in the commerce engine indicating the subtote is stored in the second tote.

26. The system of claim 25 , wherein the first and second totes are supported on first and second mobile robots of the plurality of mobile robots while the subtotes are transferred from the first tote to the second tote.

27. The system of claim 26 , wherein the workstation comprises first and second levels, and wherein the first and second mobile robots are positioned on the first level while the subtotes are transferred from the first tote to the second tote.

28. The system of claim 26 , wherein the plurality of mobile robots comprise at least a third mobile robot positioned on the second level of the workstation while the subtotes are transferred from the first tote to the second tote.
