Abstract

A staple cartridge assembly is disclosed comprising one or more wire staples and one or more staples formed from a sheet of material.

Claims (48)

1. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal cartridge axis;

a longitudinal slot defined in said deck, wherein said longitudinal slot is configured to receive a firing member;

a first longitudinal row of staple cavities; and

a second longitudinal row of staple cavities;

a sled movable toward said distal end by the firing member during a firing stroke;

a plurality of first staples removably stored in said first longitudinal row of staple cavities, wherein each said first staple comprises a first geometry;

a plurality of staple drivers configured to support said first staples, wherein said sled is configured to engage said staple drivers to eject said first staples from said first longitudinal row of staple cavities during the firing stroke; and

a plurality of second staples removably stored in said second longitudinal row of staple cavities, wherein each said second staple comprises an integrally-formed driver and comprises a second geometry and bowed shape when at least viewed from the top of said deck, wherein each said second staple comprises a second geometry, wherein said second geometry is different than said first geometry, and wherein said sled is configured to directly engage said integrally-formed drivers of said second staples and eject said second staples from said second longitudinal row of staple cavities during the firing stroke.

2. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said second longitudinal row of staple cavities is intermediate said first longitudinal row of staple cavities and said longitudinal slot.

The staple cartridge assembly of claim 2 , wherein said bowed shape comprises a first leg extending laterally from said integrally-formed driver and a second leg extending laterally from said integrally-formed driver, and wherein said first leg and said second leg are closer to said longitudinal slot than said integrally-formed driver.

The staple cartridge assembly of claim 2 , wherein said bowed shape comprises a first leg extending laterally from said integrally-formed driver and a second leg extending laterally from said integrally-formed driver, and wherein said integrally- formed driver is closer to said longitudinal slot than said first leg and said second leg.

5. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 2 , wherein said first longitudinal row of staple cavities has a first distal end, wherein said second longitudinal row of staple cavities has a second distal end, and wherein said first distal end is distal to said second distal end.

6. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said integrally-formed driver comprises a cam surface positioned at an incline to said longitudinal cartridge axis.

The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein each said first staple is a wire staple comprising a first wire staple leg, a second wire staple leg, and a wire base connecting said first wire staple leg and said second wire staple leg, and wherein each said staple driver comprises a cradle defined therein configured to receive a said wire base.

8. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , wherein said first geometry comprises a V-shaped configuration.

9. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , wherein each said second staple is comprised of a metal stock material.

10. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said bowed shape comprises a first leg extending laterally from said integrally-formed driver and a second leg extending laterally from said integrally-formed driver.

11. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cutting member;

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis;

a longitudinal slot defined in said deck, wherein said longitudinal slot is configured to receive said cutting member;

a first longitudinal row of staple cavities; and

a second longitudinal row of staple cavities;

a sled movable toward said distal end by said cutting member during a firing stroke;

a plurality of first staples removably stored in said first longitudinal row of staple cavities, wherein each said first staple comprises a first form;

a plurality of staple drivers configured to support said first staples, wherein said sled is configured to engage said staple drivers to eject said first staples from said first longitudinal row of staple cavities during said firing stroke; and

a plurality of second staples removably stored in said second longitudinal row of staple cavities, wherein said second staples comprise a bowed shape when at least viewed from the top of said deck and a second form different than the first form, and wherein said sled is configured to directly engage said second staples and eject said second staples from said second longitudinal row of staple cavities during said firing stroke.

12. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 11 , wherein each said second staple comprises a cam surface positioned at an incline.

13. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 11 , wherein each said first staple is a wire staple comprising a first wire staple leg, a second wire staple leg, and a wire base connecting said first wire staple leg and said second wire staple leg, and wherein each said staple driver comprises a cradle defined therein configured to receive a said wire base.

14. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 13 , wherein said first form comprises a V-shaped configuration.

15. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 11 , wherein each said second staple comprises a metal stock material.

16. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal cartridge axis;

a longitudinal slot defined in said deck, wherein said longitudinal slot is configured to receive a firing member;

a first longitudinal row of staple cavities; and

a second longitudinal row of staple cavities;

a sled movable toward said distal end by the firing member during a firing stroke;

a plurality of first staples removably stored in said first longitudinal row of staple cavities, wherein each said first staple comprises a first geometry;

a plurality of staple drivers configured to support said first staples, wherein said sled is configured to engage said staple drivers to eject said first staples from said first longitudinal row of staple cavities during the firing stroke; and

a plurality of second staples removably stored in said second longitudinal row of staple cavities, wherein each said second staple comprises an integrally-formed driver and comprises a bowed shape, wherein said second staples are bowed in a direction transverse to said longitudinal cartridge axis, wherein each said second staple comprises a second geometry, wherein said second geometry which is different than said first geometry, and wherein said sled is configured to directly engage said integrally-formed drivers of said second staples and eject said second staples from said second longitudinal row of staple cavities during the firing stroke.

17. The staple cartridge of claim 16 , wherein the integrally-formed driver of each said second staple comprises a cam surface positioned at an incline to said longitudinal cartridge axis.

The staple cartridge of claim 16 , wherein each said first staple is a wire staple comprising a first wire staple leg, a second wire staple leg, and a wire base connecting said first wire staple leg and said second wire staple leg, and wherein each said staple driver comprises a cradle defined therein configured to receive a said wire base.

19. The staple cartridge of claim 18 , wherein said first geometry comprises a V-shaped configuration.

20. The staple cartridge of claim 16 , wherein each said second staple comprises a metal stock material.
