Abstract

In one embodiment, a device includes a stylus tip capable of communicating wirelessly with another device through a touch sensor of the other device. The stylus tip includes one or more surface areas, one or more substrates disposed along one or more of the surface areas of the stylus tip, and a plurality of electrodes disposed on or in the one or more substrates.

Claims (35)

1. A device comprising:

a stylus tip of a stylus operable to communicate wirelessly with another device through a touch sensor of the other device, the stylus tip comprising one or more surface areas;

one or more substrates disposed along one or more of the surface areas of the stylus tip; and

a plurality of electrodes disposed on or in one or more of the substrates,

wherein a first electrode and a second electrode of the plurality of electrodes are configured to transmit signals to the other device through the touch sensor and to receive signals transmitted by the other device through the touch sensor,

wherein the first electrode corresponds to a first vertical segment of the one or more substrates and the second electrode corresponds to a second vertical segment of the one or more substrates, wherein the first vertical segment and the second vertical segment extend along a central vertical axis of the stylus tip and are disposed adjacent to each other along a radial circumference of the stylus tip, and

wherein each of the first electrode and the second electrode includes multiple segments disposed in a stack along the central vertical axis to form the corresponding vertical segment.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electrodes are disposed along the radial circumference of the stylus tip as a ring surrounding the central vertical axis.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more substrates are segmented horizontally and vertically, and wherein each segment corresponds to an electrode.

4. The device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying logic that is operable when executed to dynamically configure the first electrode and the second electrode.

5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising mechanical means operable to dynamically configure the first electrode and the second electrode.

6. The device of claim 1 , further comprising electrical or electronic means operable to dynamically configure the first electrode and the second electrode.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of electrodes is operable to be dynamically configured as a drive electrode to transmit the signals or a sense electrode to receive the signals.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein each of the electrodes is operable to be dynamically configured as a ground electrode or a guard electrode.

9. A system comprising:

a device comprising a touch sensor; and

a stylus operable to communicate wirelessly with the device through the touch sensor of the device, the stylus comprising a stylus tip, the stylus tip comprising:

one or more surface areas;

one or more substrates disposed along one or more of the surface areas of the stylus tip; and

a plurality of electrodes disposed on or in one or more of the substrates,

wherein a first electrode and a second electrode of the plurality of electrodes are configured to transmit signals to the device through the touch sensor and to receive signals transmitted by the device through the touch sensor,

wherein the first electrode corresponds to a first vertical segment of the one or more substrates and the second electrode corresponds to a second vertical segment of the one or more substrates, wherein the first vertical segment and the second vertical segment extend along a central vertical axis of the stylus tip and are disposed adjacent to each other along a radial circumference of the stylus tip, and

wherein the one or more substrates are segmented horizontally and vertically, and wherein each segment corresponds to an electrode.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of electrodes are disposed along the radial circumference of the stylus tip as a ring surrounding the central vertical axis.

11. The system of claim 9 , further comprising one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying logic that is operable when executed to dynamically configure the first electrode and the second electrode.

12. The system of claim 9 , further comprising mechanical means operable to dynamically configure the first electrode and the second electrode.

13. The system of claim 9 , further comprising electrical or electronic means operable to dynamically configure the first electrode and the second electrode.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein each of the plurality of electrodes is operable to be dynamically configured as a drive electrode to transmit the signals or a sense electrode to receive the signals.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein each of the electrodes is operable to be dynamically configured as a ground electrode or a guard electrode.

16. The device of claim 9 , wherein the stylus is synchronized to the device by receiving the signals transmitted by the device.

17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the stylus is synchronized to the device through a pre-determined bit sequence transmitted by the touch sensor of the device.

18. A method executed between an active stylus and a device coupled to a touch sensor, the method comprising:

configuring a first electrode and a second electrode of a stylus tip of the active stylus to communicate wirelessly with the device through the touch sensor of the device, wherein the first electrode and the second electrode are disposed on or in one or more substrates disposed along one or more surface areas of the stylus tip, wherein the first electrode corresponds to a first vertical segment of the one or more substrates and the second electrode corresponds to a second vertical segment of the one or more substrates, wherein the first vertical segment and the second vertical segment extend along a central vertical axis of the stylus tip and are disposed adjacent to each other along a radial circumference of the stylus tip, wherein each of the first electrode and the second electrode includes multiple segments disposed in a stack along the central vertical axis to form the corresponding vertical segment;
