Abstract

Assisting robotic arm setup in a surgical robotic system using augmented reality can include capturing a live video of a user setting up a robotic arm in a surgical robotic system. A visual guide representing a target pose of the robotic arm can be rendered onto the live video, resulting in an augmented live video for guiding the arm setup. The augmented live video can be displayed to the user while the user is following the visual guide to set up the robotic arm. The captured live video can be continuously processed to determine whether the robotic arm has reached the target pose.

Claims (40)

1. A system for guiding setup of a surgical robotic arm having a processor configured to:

receive a live video of a user setting up the surgical robotic arm captured by a camera;

render a virtual robotic arm in a target pose that includes a position of each of a plurality of members of the virtual robotic arm, onto the live video, resulting in an augmented live video for guiding the surgical robotic arm;

stream the augmented live video as a mirror image to a display facing substantially in the same direction as the camera, to visually guide the user through arm setup to the target pose; and

indicate on the display when each of a plurality of members of the surgical robotic arm matches the target pose of the virtual robotic arm, within a tolerance.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

process the live video continuously to determine whether the surgical robotic arm is at or within the tolerance of the target pose as represented by the virtual robotic arm.

3. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

an electronic memory having stored therein:

one or more 3D models of surgical robotic arms, each surgical robotic arm being associated with one or more target poses, and

a user interface configured to provide selectable options of the one or more 3D models of the surgical robotic arms and the associated target poses.

4. The system, according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to indicate on the display when an object is detected in a calculated path between the surgical robotic arm and the target pose.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to determine an orientation or position of a surgical table or other robotic mounting hardware, and adjust the target pose of the virtual robotic arm based on the orientation or the position of the surgical table or other robotic mounting hardware.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to calculate a second target pose of the virtual robotic arm based on adjusting a saved pose of the virtual robotic arm with respect to a size of a patient.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to identify the surgical robotic arm and a surgical table by comparing and matching objects captured by the camera with 3D models of tables and robotics in computer memory.

8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the camera is a 2D camera.

9. The system according to claim 8 , wherein the processor is configured to track the surgical robotic arm and a surgical table with a 2D marker.

10. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the camera is a 3D camera with a depth sensor.

11. The system according to claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to track the surgical robotic arm and a surgical table and other objects in view, based on depth data received from the depth sensor and by comparing and matching objects captured by the camera with 3D models of tables and robotics in computer memory.

12. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to receive status from the surgical robotic arm.

13. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to determine relative depths of objects and occlude the virtual robotic arms with objects, when the objects are determined to be between the camera and the surgical robotic arm.

14. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to:

receive one or more setup videos captured by one or more additional cameras,

render one or more additional augmented surgical environment videos for guiding the surgical robotic arm, and

display one or more of the one or more of the additional augmented surgical environment videos to show different perspectives of the setting up of the surgical robotic arm.

15. The system according to claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to display all of the perspectives of the one or more additional augmented surgical environment videos.

16. The system according to claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to display a best perspective of the one or more additional augmented surgical environment videos.

17. The system according to claim 16 , wherein the processor is configured to select which of the perspectives to display based on a location of the surgical robotic arm, a location of the user, or a location of the user relative to the location of the surgical robotic arm.

18. A method for assisting setup of a surgical robotic arm, comprising:

rendering a visual guide representing a target pose that includes a position of each of a plurality of members of the surgical robotic arm onto a live video captured by a camera of a user setting up the surgical robotic arm in a surgical robotic system, resulting in an augmented live video for guiding the surgical robotic arm;

displaying the augmented live video to the user as a mirror image on a display facing substantially in a same direction as the camera;

while the user is following the visual guide to set up the surgical robotic arm, continuously processing the captured live video to determine whether the surgical robotic arm has reached the target pose; and

indicating on the display when each of the plurality of members of the surgical robotic arm is at, or within a tolerance of, the target pose.

19. A system for guiding setup of a surgical robotic arm, comprising a processor configured to:

receive live video of a user setting up the surgical robotic arm captured by a camera;

render a virtual robotic arm in a target pose, onto the live video, resulting in an augmented live video for guiding the surgical robotic arm;

calculate a path between a current pose of the surgical robotic arm and the target pose of the virtual robotic arm;

stream the augmented live video as a mirror image to a display facing substantially in the same direction as the camera, to visually guide the user through arm setup to the target pose; and

indicate on the display when a) the surgical robotic arm is at, or within a tolerance of, the virtual robotic arm at the target pose, or b) a possible collision is detected between the surgical robotic arm and an object in the calculated path.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the object is detected based on computer vision or a 3D camera.
