Abstract

A patient support for supporting a patient includes an inflatable mattress defining a support surface and a pneumatic system for inflating the inflatable mattress. The pneumatic system includes a pressurized reservoir for holding pressurized air and selectively releases pressurized air from the reservoir to the mattress.

Claims (35)

1. A patient mattress comprising: a plurality of inflatable bladders, each bladder of the inflatable bladders having an upwardly facing bladder wall providing a patient facing side for supporting the patient on the patient mattress and a cavity; the inflatable bladders being formed from a first sheet of elastomeric material joined with a second sheet to form a matrix with the inflatable bladders, wherein the inflatable bladders are arranged in rows and columns, the rows extending across a width of the mattress, and the columns extending along a length of the mattress, with at least a first group of the inflatable bladders in fluid communication with each of the other bladders in the first group of the inflatable bladders wherein when a patient lies on a set of the first group of the inflatable bladders, pressure in the set of the first group of the inflatable bladders is redistributed to bladders surrounding in the set of the first group of the inflatable bladders; a pressure sensitive sensor disposed and overmolded on a top side of said upwardly facing bladder wall of each of the inflatable bladders of the first group of the inflatable bladders; a pneumatic control system; a controller in communication with the pneumatic control system and the sensors to monitor pressure in communication and to control the pneumatic control system to control inflation of the first group of the inflatable bladders, and the controller configured to adjust or control the pressure distribution in the first group of the inflatable bladders based on input from the sensors.

The patient mattress according to claim 1 , wherein the first sheet includes a plurality of sacs, the sacs forming the inflatable bladders, and wherein the first sheet is joined with the second sheet around the sacs of at least the first group of the inflatable bladders with intermittent gaps to form passageways there between for at least the first group of the inflatable bladders to allow air flow between the inflatable bladders of the first group of the inflatable bladders.

3. The patient mattress according to claim 1 , wherein the first sheet comprises a gelatinous elastomeric material.

4. The patient mattress according to claim 3 , wherein the second sheet comprises a gelatinous elastomeric sheet with a layer of non-woven material to limit stretch of the second sheet.

5. The patient mattress according to claim 1 , wherein the first sheet is joined with the second sheet by welds.

6. The patient mattress according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second sheets are mechanically coupled together.

7. The patient mattress according to claim 1 , further comprising a bed based control board, and wherein the controller is in communication with the bed based control board controller and configured to transmit information or receive information relative to the mattress.

8. The patient mattress according to claim 1 , further comprising a display, wherein the controller is in communication with the display and configured to display information relative to the mattress at the display.

9. The patient mattress according to claim 8 , wherein the display is configured to provide a user interface to control the mattress.

The patient mattress according to claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to inflate the inflatable bladders between two volumes, each volume being less than their full volume so that the inflatable bladders are in an un-stretched state when inflated and unloaded by a patient wherein the upwardly facing bladder walls of the inflatable bladders are not distended.

11. A patient mattress comprising:

a plurality of inflatable bladders, each bladder of the inflatable bladders having an upwardly facing bladder wall providing a patient facing side for supporting the patient on the patient mattress and a cavity;

the inflatable bladders being formed from a first sheet of elastomeric material joined with a second sheet to form a matrix with the inflatable bladders, wherein the inflatable bladders are arranged in rows and columns, the rows extending across a width of the mattress, and the columns extending along a length of the mattress, with at least a first group of the inflatable bladders in fluid communication with each of the other bladders in the first group of the inflatable bladders wherein when a patient lies on a set of the first group of the inflatable bladders, pressure in the set of the first group of the inflatable bladders is redistributed to bladders surrounding in the set of the first group of the inflatable bladders;

a pressure sensitive sensor supported by a top side of said upwardly facing bladder wall of each of the inflatable bladders of the first group of the inflatable bladders;

a pneumatic control system;

a controller in communication with the pneumatic control system and the sensors to monitor pressure in communication and to control the pneumatic control system to control inflation of the first group of the inflatable bladders, and the controller configured to adjust or control the pressure distribution in the first group of the inflatable bladders based on input from the sensors; and wherein the second sheet is less stretchy than the first sheet.

12. A patient mattress comprising:

a plurality of inflatable bladders, each bladder of the inflatable bladders having an upwardly facing bladder wall providing a patient facing side for supporting the patient on the patient mattress and a cavity;

the inflatable bladders being formed from a first sheet of elastomeric material joined with a second sheet to form a matrix with the inflatable bladders, wherein the inflatable bladders are arranged in rows and columns, the rows extending across a width of the mattress, and the columns extending along a length of the mattress, with at least a first group of the inflatable bladders in fluid communication with each of the other bladders in the first group of the inflatable bladders wherein when a patient lies on a set of the first group of the inflatable bladders, pressure in the set of the first group of the inflatable bladders is redistributed to bladders surrounding in the set of the first group of the inflatable bladders;

a pressure sensitive sensor supported by said upwardly facing bladder wall of each of the inflatable bladders of the first group of the inflatable bladders;

a pneumatic control system;

a controller in communication with the pneumatic control system and the sensors to monitor pressure in communication and to control the pneumatic control system to control inflation of the first group of the inflatable bladders, and the controller configured to adjust or control the pressure distribution in the first group of the inflatable bladders based on input from the sensors;

a display, wherein the controller is in communication with the display and configured to display information relative to the mattress at the display, wherein the display displays an immersion map of a patient supported on the mattress.

13. A patient mattress comprising: a first sheet; a second sheet joined with the first sheet to form a plurality of chambers there between to form a plurality of inflatable bladders, wherein the first sheet and the second sheet form there between a plurality of passageways in fluid communication with the inflatable bladders, with each inflatable bladder being independently inflatable and controllable, and each passageway having an inlet; and a valve in fluid communication with each bladder of the plurality of the inflatable bladders via a respective inlet of the inlets for controlling flow of air into the plurality of the inflatable bladders.

14. The patient mattress according to claim 13 , wherein each valve is in communication with a respective inlet via tubing.

15. The patient mattress according to claim 13 , wherein each valve is independently controlled.

16. The patient mattress according to claim 13 , wherein the first sheet and the second sheet form a cushioning layer having an underside, and the inlets are located at an underside of the cushioning layer.

17. The patient mattress according to claim 13 , wherein each valve is in close proximity to a respective inlet.

18. A method of forming a patient mattress comprising the steps of: forming a first sheet with a plurality of sacs; providing a second sheet; joining the first sheet to the second sheet, each sac forming an upper wall of a bladder, and the upper walls having a top side for facing a patient supported thereon; and providing and overmolding a sensor on the top side of the upper walls of the bladders.

19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein said forming the first sheet includes injection molding or thermoforming the first sheet with the plurality of sacs.

20. A method of forming a patient mattress comprising the steps of:

forming a first sheet with a plurality of sacs;

providing a second sheet;

joining the first sheet to the second sheet, each sac forming an upper wall of a bladder, and the upper walls having a top side for facing a patient supported thereon; and

providing a sensor at or in the top side of the upper walls of the bladders, wherein said providing a second sheet includes providing a sheet having less stretch than the first sheet.
