Abstract

Various components for artificial candles and other lighting devices are described that can be used to create a realistic flame effect in the devices. The devices include a flame element that extends upwardly from a housing. A light source can be disposed with respect to the flame element such that the flame element is illuminated. A variety of drive mechanisms could be disposed within the body of the device that can cause movement of the flame element with respect to the housing. The flame element can be coupled to a housing or mounting bracket of the device using various components to suspend the flame element within the housing.

Claims (30)

1. An electronic lighting device, comprising:

an outer shell having a top opening, wherein the outer shell comprises an elongated section and a bottom section having a smaller diameter than the elongated section;

a flame element movably positioned within the outer shell, wherein the flame element comprises an upper portion that is shaped like a real flame, the upper portion extending above the opening;

a drive mechanism positioned below the flame element configured to drive a movement of the flame element to simulate a moving flame; and

a light source configured to emit light onto the flame element;

wherein the flame element has multiple different transparency amounts on the flame element, where a first portion of the flame element is more transparent than a second portion of the flame element.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the upper portion of the flame element is more transparent than a lower portion of the flame element.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the flame element further comprises an aperture positioned at a lower portion of the flame element, and wherein the aperture extends in a line that is parallel to a surface of the upper portion of the flame element.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the flame element has multiple different colored areas on the flame element.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the flame element has areas between the multiple different colored areas that form gradients between the different colored areas on the flame element.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell comprises an uneven top ridge to mimic an appearance of a real candle.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell comprises a scented or unscented wax coating to mimic an appearance of a real candle.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a light-emitting diode (LED).

9. The device of claim 1 , comprising:

an inner layer positioned to surround an interior perimeter of the outer shell, wherein the inner layer includes an opaque material configured to prevent light from the light source being seen through the outer shell.

10. The device of claim 1 , further comprising:

an arm coupled to the outer shell to suspend the flame element within an internal cavity of the outer shell.

11. An electronic lighting device, comprising:

a housing having a top opening, wherein the housing comprises an elongated section and a bottom section having a smaller diameter than the elongated section;

a flame element at least partially extending above the top opening, wherein the flame element comprises a hollow interior and an aperture, wherein the flame element has multiple different colored areas on the flame element, and wherein the flame element has areas between the multiple different colored areas that form gradients between the different colored areas on the flame element;

a support arm coupled to the housing and extending into the hollow interior through the aperture such that the flame element is removably suspended on a first end of the support arm to move with respect to the support arm;

an electromagnet driver positioned below the flame element to drive the flame element to move with respect to the housing to simulate a movement of a real flame; and

a light source configured to emit light onto the flame element.

12. The device of claim 11 , comprising:

a lens positioned to focus the light emitted from the light source onto the flame element.

13. The device of claim 11 , comprising:

a light controlling material disposed on at least part of an inner surface of the housing to prevent the light from the light source from projecting through one or more sides of the housing.

14. The device of claim 11 , wherein the aperture is positioned at a base portion of the flame element, and wherein the support arm is positioned below the light emitted from the light source.

15. The device of claim 11 , wherein the flame element has multiple different transparency amounts on the flame element, where a first portion on the flame element has a first transparency to light, and a second section on the flame element has a second transparency light different than the first transparency to light.

16. The device of claim 11 , wherein the housing comprises an uneven top ridge to mimic an appearance of a real candle, and wherein the housing comprises a scented or unscented wax coating to mimic an appearance of a real candle.
