Abstract

Software and lasers are used in finishing apparel to produce a desired wear pattern or other design. A technique includes determining a fabric's response to a laser, capturing an initial image of a wear pattern on a garment, and processing the initial image to obtain a working image in grayscale. The working image is further processed to obtain a difference image by comparing each pixel relative to a dark reference. The difference image is converted to a laser values image by using the previously determined fabric response to the laser.

Claims (78)

1. A method comprising:

providing a garment comprising fabric panels made from a woven material comprising a warp comprising dyed cotton yarn, wherein the fabric panels are sewn together using thread; and

on an outer surface of the garment, creating by laser a finishing pattern based on a laser input file, wherein the finishing pattern created by laser on the outer surface of the garment comprises

at a first location on the outer surface of the garment, a first amount of material has been removed by the laser,

at a second location on the outer surface of the garment, a second amount of material has been removed by the laser,

at a third location on the outer surface of the garment, a third amount of material has been removed by the laser,

the first amount of material removed is less than the second amount of material removed, and the third amount of material removed is less than the first amount of material removed and less than the second amount of material removed,

the laser input file comprises digital data that is representative of at least a portion of a finishing pattern from an existing garment, and the laser input file is created by

providing a first target image of the at least a portion of a finishing pattern from the existing garment,

processing the first target image to remove texture noise to obtain a second target image, and

determining values for the laser input file that will result in a finishing pattern on the garment to obtain an appearance similar to the first target image of the finishing pattern from the existing garment, wherein the determining values for the laser input file comprises

selecting a dark reference in the second target image of the finishing pattern from the existing garment,

for a pixel in the second target image, calculating a difference value between a pixel value and the dark reference,

storing the difference value in the laser input file, wherein the laser input file comprises a reverse image compared to the second target image, and

a first pixel in the laser input file corresponds to the first location on the outer surface of the garment and comprises a first value, and based on the first value, the laser removed the first amount of material at the first location,

a second pixel in the laser input file corresponds to the second location on the outer surface of the garment and comprises a second value, and based on the second value, the laser removed the second amount of material at the second location,

a third pixel in the laser input file corresponds to the third location on the outer surface of the garment and comprises a third value, and based on the third value, the laser removed the third amount of material at the third location,

the third location corresponds to the dark reference from the second target image, and

the first value is less than the second value, and the third value is less than the first value and less than the second value.

2. The method of claim 1 comprising:

processing the first target image using a contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization image technique.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the dark reference comprises value based on a function involving a plurality of pixels in a region of the second target image.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the garment comprises a pair of pants.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the garment comprises a pair of jeans.

6. A method comprising:

providing a garment comprising fabric panels made from a woven material comprising a warp comprising dyed cotton yarn, wherein the fabric panels are sewn together using thread; and

on an outer surface of the garment, creating by laser a finishing pattern based on a laser input file, wherein the finishing pattern created by laser on the outer surface of the garment comprises

at a first location on the outer surface of the garment, a first amount of material has been removed by the laser,

at a second location on the outer surface of the garment, a second amount of material has been removed by the laser,

at a third location on the outer surface of the garment, a third amount of material has been removed by the laser,

the first amount of material removed is less than the second amount of material removed, and the third amount of material removed is less than the first amount of material removed and less than the second amount of material removed,

the laser input file comprises digital data that is representative of at least a portion of a finishing pattern from an existing garment, and the laser input file is created by

determining a mathematical function of a laser-fabric response for the woven material of the garment,

providing a target image of the at least a portion of a finishing pattern from the existing garment, and

determining values for the laser input file that will result in a finishing pattern on the garment to obtain an appearance similar to the target image of the finishing pattern from the existing garment, wherein the determining values for the laser input file comprises

selecting a dark reference in the target image of the finishing pattern from the existing garment,

for a pixel in the target image, calculating a difference value between a pixel value and the dark reference,

storing the difference value in difference file, and

using the difference file and the mathematical function of a laser-fabric response, generating the laser input file,

wherein a first pixel in the laser input file corresponds to the first location on the outer surface of the garment and comprises a first value, and based on the first value, the laser removed the first amount of material at the first location,

a second pixel in the laser input file corresponds to the second location on the outer surface of the garment and comprises a second value, and based on the second value, the laser removed the second amount of material at the second location,

a third pixel in the laser input file corresponds to the third location on the outer surface of the garment and comprises a third value, and based on the third value, the laser removed the third amount of material at the third location,

the third location corresponds to the dark reference from the target image, and

the first value is less than the second value, and the third value is less than the first value and less than the second value.

7. The method of claim 6 comprising:

processing the target image using a contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization image technique.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the dark reference comprises value based on a function involving a plurality of pixels in a region of the target image.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein the dark reference comprises value based on a function involving a plurality of pixels in a region of the target image.

10. The method of claim 6 wherein the garment comprises a pair of pants.

11. The method of claim 6 wherein the garment comprises a pair of jeans.

12. A method comprising:

providing a garment comprising fabric panels made from a first material comprising a warp comprising dyed cotton yarn, wherein the fabric panels are sewn together using thread; and

on an outer surface of the garment, creating by laser a finishing pattern based on a laser input file, wherein the finishing pattern created by laser on the outer surface of the garment comprises

at a first location on the outer surface of the garment, a first amount of material has been removed by the laser,

at a second location on the outer surface of the garment, a second amount of material has been removed by the laser,

at a third location on the outer surface of the garment, a third amount of material has been removed by the laser,

the first amount of material removed is less than the second amount of material removed, and the third amount of material removed is less than the first amount of material removed and less than the second amount of material removed,

the laser input file comprises digital data that is representative of a finishing pattern from an existing garment made from a second material, the first material comprises a different fabric characteristic from the second material, and the laser input file is created by

capturing a target image of the finishing pattern from the existing garment of the second material, and

determining values for the laser input file that will result in a finishing pattern on the first material to obtain an appearance similar to the target image of the finishing pattern from the existing garment of the second material, wherein the determining values for the laser input file comprises

selecting a dark reference in the target image of the finishing pattern from the existing garment of the second material,

for a pixel in the target image, calculating a difference value between a pixel value and the dark reference, and

storing the difference value in the laser input file, wherein the laser input file comprises a reverse image compared to the target image,

a first pixel in the laser input file corresponds to the first location on the outer surface of the garment and comprises a first value, and based on the first value, the laser removed the first amount of material at the first location,

a second pixel in the laser input file corresponds to the second location on the outer surface of the garment and comprises a second value, and based on the second value, the laser removed the second amount of material at the second location,

a third pixel in the laser input file corresponds to the third location on the outer surface of the garment and comprises a third value, and based on the third value, the laser removed the third amount of material at the third location,

the third location corresponds to the dark reference from the target image, and

the first value is less than the second value, and the third value is less than the first value and less than the second value.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the warp is ring dyed using an indigo dye,

based on the laser input file, selected amounts of material have been removed by the laser from the surface of the first material at different pixel locations of the garment, and

for lighter pixel locations of the finishing pattern, a greater amount of the dyed cotton warp yarn is removed, while for darker pixel locations of the finishing pattern, a lesser amount of the dyed cotton warp yarn is removed.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the finishing pattern created extends across portions of the garment where two or more fabric panels are joined together by thread by exposing these portions to the laser.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein the first material comprises a weft comprising yarn that has not been dyed.

16. The method of claim 12 wherein for the portions of the garment exposed to the laser where the fabric panels are joined, the thread used to join together the fabric panels comprises cotton.

17. The method of claim 12 wherein the finishing pattern on the outer surface of the garment was created by a single pass of the laser.

18. The method of claim 12 wherein the finishing pattern on the outer surface of the garment was created by multiple passes of the laser.

19. The method of claim 12 wherein the capturing a target image of the finishing pattern from the existing garment of the second material comprises using contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization image processing.

20. The method of claim 12 wherein to create the finishing pattern on the outer surface of the garment, different laser levels are obtained by varying an output of the laser by altering a characteristic of the laser comprising at least one of a frequency, period, pulse width, power, duty cycle, or burning speed.
