Abstract

A solar module architecture features a plurality of photovoltaic strips separated from a cell workpiece. The cell workpiece comprises alignment mark(s) located in cell quadrants close to the workpiece edge. According to specific embodiments, an alignment mark is positioned at a break in a bus bar. As a result of this location, in the assembled solar module containing the separated strip, the alignment mark is hidden from view by an overlapping module element. In particular embodiments, the overlapping module element is another separated PV strip in a shingled configuration.

Claims (26)

1 . An apparatus comprising:

a solar module including an alignment mark located on a front side for reference during fabrication, the alignment mark being hidden from view of the solar module.

2 . An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a first element, wherein the alignment mark is hidden from view as being overlapped by the first element.

3 . An apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the first element comprises a first separated photovoltaic (PV) strip overlapping the alignment mark.

4 . An apparatus as in claim 3 further comprising a second separated PV strip, wherein the alignment mark is present on the second separated PV strip overlapped by the first separated PV strip in a shingled configuration.

5 . An apparatus as in claim 4 wherein the alignment mark is located proximate to a bus bar on a front side of the second separated PV strip.

6 . An apparatus as in claim 5 wherein the alignment mark is present at a break of the bus bar.

7 . An apparatus as in claim 6 wherein the alignment mark is a circle.

8 . An apparatus as in claim 7 wherein the circle has a diameter of a width of the bus bar.

9 . An apparatus as in claim 5 wherein:

the second separated PV strip comprises a conductive finger of a width smaller than a width of the bus bar;

the conductive finger intersects the bus bar; and

the conductive finger does not intersect the alignment mark.

10 . An apparatus as in claim 5 wherein the conductive finger and the alignment mark are formed of a same conductive material.

11 . An apparatus as in claim 5 further comprising a locating feature defined by a shape of the bus bar.

12 . A method comprising:

referencing an alignment mark on a workpiece to process a photovoltaic (PV) element; and

fabricating a solar module to include the PV element such that the alignment mark is not visible from a front side of the solar module.

13 . A method as in claim 12 wherein fabricating the solar module comprises overlapping the alignment mark with another element of the solar module.

14 . A method as in claim 13 wherein the other element comprises a first separated PV strip overlapping the alignment mark.

15 . A method as in claim 14 wherein the PV element comprises a second separated PV strip overlapped by the first separated PV strip in a shingled configuration.

16 . A method as in claim 12 wherein processing the photovoltaic element comprises forming the alignment mark and a bus bar at a same time.

17 . A method as in claim 16 wherein the alignment mark and the bus bar are formed by printing.

18 . A method as in claim 16 wherein the alignment mark and the bus bar are formed by electroplating.

19 . A method as in claim 12 wherein the alignment mark is located in a quadrant of the workpiece.

20 . A method as in claim 12 wherein one dimension of the alignment mark is the same as one dimension of the bus bar.
