Abstract

Tissue engineering devices and methods employing scaffolds made of absorbable material for use in the human body for tissue genesis and regenerative and cellular medicine including breast reconstruction and cosmetic and aesthetic procedures and supplementing organ function in vivo.

Claims (26)

1. An implantable prosthesis comprising:

a tissue infiltratable scaffold of biocompatible material having a proximal end, a distal end spaced from the proximal end, and a hollow core extending through the scaffold along a core axis from the proximal end to the distal end, the scaffold including a plurality of chambers circumferentially arranged around the core axis, each of the plurality of chambers extending in a corresponding outward radial direction away from the hollow core, the scaffold further including a proximal opening at the proximal end and a distal opening at the distal end, the proximal and distal openings being aligned with each end of the hollow core to allow access to the hollow core; and

a first layer of biocompatible material located at the proximal end of the scaffold, the first layer being oriented in a direction transverse to the core axis and having a first opening aligned with the proximal opening of the scaffold to permit access to the hollow core from the proximal end.

2. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of chambers extends along a corresponding chamber axis which is transverse to the core axis.

3. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 2 , wherein each chamber axis extends in a different radial direction relative to each other.

4. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of chambers is open in the corresponding outward radial direction.

5. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of chambers has a size which increases in the corresponding outward radial direction.

6. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of chambers has a width which increases in the corresponding outward radial direction.

7. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the scaffold has a frusto-conical shape.

8. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the scaffold has a spherical shape.

9. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the scaffold has a tubular shape.

10. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the scaffold has a planar configuration at the proximal end and/or the distal end.

11. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , further comprising a second layer of biocompatible material located at the distal end of the scaffold, the second layer being oriented in a direction transverse to the core axis and having a second opening aligned with the distal opening of the scaffold to permit access to the hollow core from the distal end.

12. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the scaffold is formed of absorbable material.

13. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the scaffold is formed of mesh fabric.

14. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 13 , wherein the mesh fabric is tissue infiltratable.

15. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 13 , wherein the scaffold includes a plurality of sheets of mesh fabric.

16. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 15 , wherein the plurality of sheets of mesh fabric are connected together to form the plurality of chambers.

17. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the first layer is formed of absorbable material.

18. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the first layer is formed of mesh fabric.

19. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 18 , wherein the mesh fabric is tissue infiltratable.

20. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 11 , wherein the second layer is formed of absorbable material.

21. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 11 , wherein the second layer is formed of mesh fabric.

22. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 21 , wherein the mesh fabric is tissue infiltratable.

23. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of chambers are tissue infiltratable.

24. The implantable prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the scaffold is configured to augment and/or reconstruct an anatomical shape of a human breast.
