Abstract

A surgical simulation system is provided. The system includes at least one simulated body organ placed upon the base of an organ tray and at least one covering layer placed over the simulated body organ. At least one of the simulated body organ and covering layer includes electro-conductive gel that is operably severable under application of electrical current to simulate electrosurgery in a training environment. The training environment comprises a top cover connected to and spaced apart from a base to define an internal cavity that is partially obstructed from direct observation by a practitioner. The tray, simulated body organs and covering layer are placed inside the internal cavity for the practice of laparoscopic surgical procedures.

Claims (28)

1 . A surgical simulation system, comprising:

a module support that has one or more receiving portions formed in the module support, wherein the module support has at least a first layer and a second layer, wherein the second layer supports the first layer; and

one or more tumor modules that are configured to fit in the one or more receiving portions of the module support, wherein the one or more tumor modules are interchangeable,

wherein the first layer of the module support is made of a material that is severable via electrical current to allow for removal of at least one of the one or more tumor modules from the module support thereby simulating electrosurgery.

2 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 further comprising a covering layer, wherein the covering layer is placed over at least a portion of the surgical simulation system and severable via an electrical current.

3 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein the first layer comprises a conductive gel configured to be severed via electrical current.

4 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein the first layer is calendared or press-formed so as to have a texture or finish thereby appearing to be naturally occurring.

5 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein the first layer is a combination of the conductive gel and non-conductive layers.

6 . The surgical simulation system of claim 5 , wherein portions of the non-conductive layers are mechanically dissectible in order to expose the conductive gel.

7 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein the first layer, the second layer, and the module support are each made of different materials relative to each other.

8 . The surgical simulation system of claim 7 , wherein the first layer is an elastomeric material.

9 . The surgical simulation system of claim 7 , wherein the second layer is a foam material.

10 . The surgical simulation system of claim 7 , wherein the module support is a polymeric material.

11 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein the module support further comprises a sheet of elastomeric material.

12 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein the first layer has a plurality of strong and weak regions configured to be dissected via mechanical dissecting instruments or scissors.

13 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more receiving portions each have different thicknesses, and wherein the one or more of tumor modules each have different sizes and are configured to fit in specific receiving portions.

14 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein the module support is configured to be housed within an internal cavity of a surgical training device, the surgical training device comprising:

a base, and

a top cover connected to and spaced apart from the base to define the internal cavity between the top cover and the base, wherein the internal cavity being at least partially obstructed from direct observation by a user.

15 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more tumor modules comprise one or more tumors embedded therein, the one or more tumors configured to be excised and removed.

16 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein a receiving portion in the second layer of the module support has a different shape than a receiving portion in the first layer of the same module support.

17 . The surgical simulation system of claim 1 , wherein the module support has a planar shape.

18 . A surgical simulation system, comprising:

a module support having one or more receiving portions; and

one or more interchangeable tumor modules embedded within the module support,

wherein at least a portion of the module support is severable via electrical current to allow for removal of at least one of the one or more interchangeable tumor modules.

19 . The surgical simulation system of claim 18 further comprising adhesives placed along a trajectory to simulate a particular procedure.

20 . The surgical simulation system of claim 18 wherein at least a portion of the one or more interchangeable tumor modules comprises non-conductive regions to define a predetermined pathway between the non-conductive regions to simulate pathways encountered in real surgery for practicing electrosurgical activity.
