Abstract

Load-carrying apparatus, assemblies, and subterranean drilling systems may include a support ring with a plurality of contact elements coupled to the support ring. The plurality of contact elements may have a surface exhibiting a partially cylindrical shape.

Claims (40)

1. A load-carrying apparatus, comprising:

an inner assembly comprising:

an inner support ring positioned circumferentially about an inner ring axis; and

a first plurality of superhard contact elements coupled to the inner support ring, each of the first plurality of superhard contact elements having a superhard contact surface, the superhard contact surface of each of the first plurality of superhard contact elements comprising a convex partial-cylindrical surface substantially centered about the inner ring axis; and

an outer assembly comprising:

an outer support ring positioned circumferentially about an outer ring axis; and

a second plurality of superhard contact elements coupled to the outer support ring, each of the second plurality of superhard contact elements having a superhard contact surface;

wherein the superhard contact surface of each of the second plurality of superhard contact elements comprises a partial-spherical surface.

2. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the superhard contact surface of each of the first plurality of superhard contact elements collectively define an overall convex cylindrical shape.

3. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the partial-spherical surface of each of the superhard contact surface of the second plurality of superhard contact elements contacts a respective portion of the convex partial-cylindrical surface of the superhard contact surface of an opposed one of the first plurality of superhard contact elements.

4. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the inner support ring is configured to tilt relative to the outer support ring while the second plurality of superhard contact elements and the first plurality of superhard contact elements remain in contact with each other.

5. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the first plurality of superhard contact elements and each of the second plurality of superhard contact elements comprises a polycrystalline diamond table bonded to a substrate, the polycrystalline diamond table comprising the superhard contact surface.

6. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the convex partial-cylindrical surface of the superhard contact surface of the first plurality of superhard contact elements comprises a first cross section exhibiting a curvature and a second cross section exhibiting a substantially planar profile.

7. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of superhard contact elements and the second plurality of superhard contact elements comprise at least one of a polycrystalline diamond table, a carbide material, or a nitride material.

8. A load-carrying apparatus, comprising:

a first assembly comprising:

a first support ring positioned circumferentially around a first ring axis; and

one or more contact elements coupled to the first support ring, the one or more contact elements each having a contact surface, the contact surface of each of the one or more contact elements exhibiting a partial-cylindrical surface; and

a second assembly comprising:

a second support ring positioned circumferentially around a second ring axis; and

one or more contact elements coupled to the second support ring, the one or more contact elements each having a contact surface, the contact surface of each of the one or more contact elements coupled to the second support ring opposing a respective one of the partial-cylindrical surface of the one or more contact elements coupled to the first support ring, wherein the contact surface of each of the one or more contact elements coupled to the second support ring comprises a partially spherical surface.

9. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the contact surface of each of the one or more contact elements coupled to the first support ring collectively define a cylindrical outer surface substantially centered about the first ring axis.

10. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the contact surface of at least one of the one or more contact elements coupled to the first support ring contacts the contact surface of an opposing one of the one or more contact elements coupled to the second support ring.

11. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the first support ring is received at least partially within the second support ring.

12. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the first support ring is configured to tilt relative to the second support ring.

13. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the one or more contact elements coupled to the first support ring and the one or more contact elements coupled to the second support ring comprise at least one of a polycrystalline diamond table, a carbide material, or a nitride material.

14. The load-carrying apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the partial-cylindrical surface of the one or more contact elements coupled to the first support ring comprises a convex cylindrical surface.

15. A subterranean drilling system, comprising:

an output shaft operable to apply torque to a rotary drill tool, the output shaft operably coupled to a load-carrying apparatus, the load-carrying apparatus comprising:

an inner assembly comprising:

an inner support ring; and

a first plurality of superhard contact elements coupled to the inner support ring, each of the first plurality of superhard contact elements having a superhard contact surface, the superhard contact surface of each of the first plurality of superhard contact elements defining a partial-cylindrical outer surface; and

an outer assembly comprising:

an outer support ring; and

a second plurality of superhard contact elements coupled to the outer support ring, each of the second plurality of superhard contact elements having a superhard contact surface;

wherein the superhard contact surface of each of the second plurality of superhard contact elements defines an inner surface substantially centered about an outer ring axis and opposing the partial-cylindrical outer surface of the inner assembly, and wherein the superhard contact surface of each of the second plurality of superhard contact elements comprises a partially spherical surface or a planar surface.

16. The subterranean drilling system of claim 15 , wherein the superhard contact surface of each of the first plurality of superhard contact elements comprises a convex surface.

17. The subterranean drilling system of claim 15 , wherein the first plurality of superhard contact elements and the second plurality of superhard contact elements comprise at least one of a polycrystalline diamond table, a carbide material, or a nitride material.

18. The subterranean drilling system of claim 15 , wherein the superhard contact surface of each of the second plurality of superhard contact elements comprises the partially spherical surface.

19. The subterranean drilling system of claim 15 , wherein the inner assembly is configured to tilt relative to the outer assembly such that the inner assembly is circumferentially centered about a different axis than the outer assembly.
