Abstract

In some embodiments, a phased array antenna, includes a plurality of antenna modules arranged in an antenna lattice configuration to form the phased array antenna, wherein an antenna module of the plurality of antenna modules includes an antenna element packaged together with an amplifier.

Claims (26)

1. A phased array antenna, comprising:

a plurality of antenna elements arranged in an antenna lattice configuration to form the phased array antenna, wherein at least some antenna elements of the plurality of antenna elements are physically rotated relative to other antenna elements of the plurality of antenna elements;

wherein a sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements in the antenna lattice configuration is grouped in a grouping, and wherein each respective antenna module in the grouping is physically rotated relative to one or more adjacent antenna elements in the grouping by a determined degree of rotation.

2. The phased array antenna of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the antenna lattice configuration is a circular pattern defining a plurality of concentric circles of antenna elements.

3. The phased array antenna of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the antenna lattice configuration is a space tapered configuration.

4. The phased array antenna of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the antenna lattice configuration is a two-dimensional (2-D) array.

5. The phased array antenna of claim 1 , wherein the sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements in the grouping are electrically excited by an electrical phase shift equal to the determined degree of rotation.

6. The phased array antenna of claim 1 , wherein the grouping includes adjacent relationships between all of the sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements within a specific area, and wherein the determined degree of rotation between adjacent antenna elements of the sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements is equal to 360 degrees divided by a number of antenna elements in the grouping.

7. The phased array antenna of claim 1 , wherein the grouping is a ring arrangement of antenna elements, and wherein the determined degree of rotation is equal to an angular distance between adjacent antenna elements of the sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements in the ring arrangement.

8. The phased array antenna of claim 1 , wherein the grouping includes adjacent relationships between antenna elements of the sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements within a specific area, and wherein the determined degree of rotation between adjacent antenna elements is equal to 360 degrees divided by a number of antenna elements in the grouping, wherein the grouping comprises a ring arrangement of antenna elements with other groupings, and wherein a degree of rotation of the grouping is equal to an angular distance between adjacent groupings in the ring arrangement.

9. A phased array antenna, comprising:

a plurality of antenna elements arranged in an antenna lattice configuration to form the phased array antenna, wherein at least some antenna elements of the plurality of antenna elements are physically rotated relative to other antenna elements of the plurality of antenna elements;

wherein an antenna element of the plurality of antenna elements further includes a support structure and an amplifier, the amplifier and the support structure disposed at a same side of the antenna element.

10. A method for arranging a plurality of antenna elements comprising a phased array antenna, the method comprising:

distributing the plurality of antenna elements in an antenna lattice configuration, an antenna module of the plurality of antenna elements including an antenna element, an amplifier, and a support structure;

orienting at least some antenna elements of the plurality of antenna elements distributed in the antenna lattice configuration to have a different physical angular orientation relative to other antenna elements of the plurality of antenna elements; and

connecting the plurality of antenna elements to a carrier.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein distributing the plurality of antenna elements comprises distributing at least a portion of the plurality of antenna elements in a circular pattern defining a plurality of concentric circles of antenna elements.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein orienting at least some antenna elements comprises orienting a sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements in the antenna lattice configuration grouped in a grouping, wherein respective antenna elements of the sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements in the grouping are adjacent to each other, and wherein each respective antenna module in the grouping is physically rotated relative to one or more adjacent antenna elements in the grouping by a determined degree of rotation.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising applying signals to the antenna elements in the grouping, wherein the signals include an electrical phase shift associated with the respective determined degree of rotation.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the determined degree of rotation comprises 360 degrees divided by a number of antenna elements in the grouping.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements in the grouping comprise antenna elements in at least two different circular patterns of a concentric circular arrangement of the antenna lattice configuration.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the determined degree of rotation for at least some of the antenna elements in the grouping comprises 360 degrees divided by a number of antenna elements in the grouping plus 360 degrees divided by a number of antenna elements within a particular circular pattern in which the at least some of the antenna elements in the grouping are located.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the sub-set of the plurality of antenna elements in the grouping comprises antenna elements in a particular circular pattern of a concentric circular arrangement of the antenna lattice configuration.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein connecting the plurality of antenna elements to the carrier comprises physically and electrically coupling each antenna module of the plurality of antenna elements to the carrier.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein connecting the plurality of antenna elements to the carrier comprises physically and electrically coupling the support structure of each antenna module of the plurality of antenna elements to the carrier.
