Abstract

A portable information handling system interacts with haptic devices of a game controller though a direct wired interface when the game controller couples to opposing sides of the information handling system and through a wireless interface when the game controller couples to a bridge having a wired interface to communicate with the game controller and a wireless interface to communicate with the information handling system. The haptic devices provide a first haptic response associated with a desired vibration for a weight of game controller and information handling system when the game controller couples directly to the information handling system, and a second haptic response associated with the desired vibration for a weight of the game controller and bridge when the game controller couples directly to the bridge for wireless communication with the information handling system.

Claims (63)

1. An information handling system comprising:

a main housing;

a main processor disposed in the main housing and operable to execute instructions that process information;

a memory disposed in the main housing and interfaced with the main processor, the memory operable to store the instructions and information;

a main wired link interfaced with the main processor and exposed at the main housing at a main port to communicate information through the main port;

a bridge housing;

a bridge processor disposed in the bridge housing and operable to execute instructions that process information;

a bridge wired link interfaced with the bridge processor and exposed at the bridge housing at a bridge port to communicate information through the bridge port;

a controller housing configured to selectively couple and decouple with the main housing and the bridge housing;

a controller processor disposed in the controller housing and operable to execute instructions that process information and to accept inputs at an input device integrated with the controller housing;

a controller wired link interfaced with the controller processor and exposed at the controller housing at a controller port to communication information through the controller port;

a haptic device interfaced with the controller processor and operable to generate variable amounts of vibration in response to a command by the controller processor; and

a non-transitory memory storing instructions that when executed on one or more of the main processor, the bridge processor and the controller processor command the haptic device to generate a first vibration response when the main housing and controller ports couple to each other and a second vibration response when the controller ports couple to the bridge housing.

2. The information handling system of claim 1 further comprising:

a main wireless communication device disposed in the main housing and interfaced with the main processor, the main wireless communication device operable to communicate information as wireless signals;

a bridge wireless communication device disposed in the bridge housing and interfaced with the bridge processor, the bridge wireless communication device operable to communication information as wireless signals; and

a non-transitory memory interfaced with the bridge processor and storing instructions that execute on the bridge controller to communicate information between the main processor and the controller processor when the bridge wired link interfaces with the controller wired link.

3. The information handling system of claim 2 wherein the controller processor generates the second vibration response when the bridge wired link couples with the controller wired link.

4. The information handling system of claim 3 wherein the first and second vibration responses are variable responses proportional to a weight of the main housing and the bridge housing.

The information handling system of claim 3 further comprising one or more accelerometers operable to measure vibration, one or more of the main processor, controller processor and the bridge processor interfacing with the one or more accelerometers to adjust the first and second vibration responses so that vibration experienced by an end user is substantially equal when the main housing couples to the controller housing and when the bridge housing couples to the controller housing.

6. The information handling system of claim 3 wherein the haptic device comprises an eccentric rotating mass and the first and second vibration responses comprise first and second rotational speeds.

7. The information handling system of claim 3 further comprising an accelerometer and gyroscope operable to detect a rotational orientation of the controller housing, the haptic device providing vibration about first and second axes based at least in part upon detected orientation.

8. The information handling system of claim 3 further comprising a display integrated in the main housing and operable to present visual images in response to inputs made at the controller housing.

The information handling system of claim 3 further comprising first and second controller housings, each controller housing having a controller processor, controller wired link and a haptic device, the first and second controller housings configured to couple to opposing sides of the main housing and opposing sides of the bridge housing.

10. A method for providing haptic feedback at an input device associated with an information handling system, the method comprising:

coupling a controller to a side of the information handling system to communicate information between the controller and information handling system through a wired interface;

separating the controller from the information handling system;

coupling the controller to a side of a bridge to physically to communicate information between the controller and the information handling system through the bridge;

providing a first haptic response at the controller when the controller communicates through the wired interface; and

providing a second haptic response at the controller when the controller communicates through the bridge.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

monitoring vibration associated with the first and second haptic responses based upon accelerations sensed at the controller; and

adjusting the first and second haptic responses to have a substantially similar vibration based upon a weight associated with the controller.

12. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

generating the first haptic response by rotating an off-balance weight at a first rotational velocity; and

generating the second haptic response by rotating the off balance weight at a second rotational velocity.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the first and second rotational velocities are proportional to a weight of the controller configured to couple to the information handling system relative to the bridge.

14. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

coupling the controller to a side of a bridge to communicate information between the controller and the bridge through a bridge wired interface; and

wirelessly communicating between the controller and the information handling system through the bridge.

15. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

coupling first and second controllers to opposing sides of the information handling system, the first controller physically aligning a first wired interface to communicate with the information handling system, the second controller physically aligning a second wired interface to communicate with the information handling system;

communicating inputs from the first and second controllers to the information handling system through the first and second wired interface;

commanding the first haptic response from the information handling system through the first and second wired interface;

separating the first and second controllers from the information handling system;

coupling the first and second controllers to opposing sides of a bridge, the first controller physically aligning the first wired interface to communicate with the bridge, the second controller physically aligning the second wired interface to communicate with the bridge;

communicating inputs from the first and second controllers to the bridge through the first and second wired interfaces;

communicating the inputs from the bridge to the information handling system through a wireless interface;

commanding the second haptic response from the information handling system to the bridge through the wireless interface; and

commanding the second haptic response from the bridge to the first and second controllers through the first and second wired interface.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein:

the first haptic response comprises rotating an off-balance weight at a first speed; and

the second haptic response comprises rotating the off balance weight at a second speed.

17. A gaming system comprising:

a housing;

a processor disposed in the housing and operable to execute instructions;

a non-transitory memory storing instructions that when executed on the processor:

command a haptic device to provide a first haptic response when activated in response to commands received from an information handling system when the housing is directly coupled to the information handling system; and

command the haptic device to provide a second haptic response when activated in response to commands received from an information handling system when the housing is directly coupled to a bridge, wherein the bridge communicates wirelessly with the information handling system.

18. The game controller of claim 17 wherein the first and second haptic responses comprise rotating an off balance weight at first and second rotational velocities.

19. The game controller of claim 17 wherein:

the information handling system communicates the command to the processor through a wired interface when the housing is directly coupled to the information handling system; and

the information handling system communicates the command to the bridge when the housing is directly coupled to the bridge and the bridge communicates the command to the processor.
