Abstract

Disclosed herein are systems and methods for monitoring calibration of positron emission tomography (PET) systems. In some variations, the systems include an imaging assembly having a gantry comprising a plurality of positron emission detectors. A housing may be coupled to the gantry, and the housing may include a bore and a radiation source holder spaced away from a patient scan region within the bore. A processor may be configured to receive positron emission data from the positron emission detectors and to distinguish the positron emission data from the radiation source holder and from the patient scan region. A fault signal may be generated when the positron emission data from the radiation source holder exceeds one or more threshold parameters or criteria.

Claims (20)

1. A system comprising:

a plurality of PET detectors disposed about a patient scan region;

a light source;

a calibration radiation source holder; and

a processor configured to receive positron emission data from the plurality of PET detectors and to extract positron emission data representing positron emission activity originating from the radiation source holder, and to generate a fault signal when the extracted positron emission data fails to satisfy one or more threshold criteria.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the patient scan region is located within a bore, and the light source is attached to an internal wall of the bore.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a light-emitting diode (LED).

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the calibration radiation source holder is located away from the light source.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the light source is retained by a lighting mount and the calibration radiation source holder is attached to the lighting mount.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a PET detector temperature sensor, and wherein the processor is configured to generate the fault signal if a PET detector temperature reading exceeds a temperature threshold.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a radiation source mounted on a rotatable gantry and a radiation detector, and wherein the processor is configured to generate the fault signal if measured radiation levels exceed a radiation threshold.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the radiation detector comprises one or more of a scintillator counter, a Gieger counter, and an ionization chamber.

9. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a gantry temperature sensor, and wherein the processor is configured to generate the fault signal if a gantry temperature reading exceeds a temperature threshold.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to deactivate the plurality of PET detectors when a fault signal is generated.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to generate a visual interlock that is output to a display when a fault signal is generated.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to generate one or more of an audio output and a tactile sensory output when the fault signal is generated.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to stop an imaging and/or radiation therapy procedure when a fault signal is generated.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fault signal comprises a number of PET detectors at fault and the processor is configured to compare the number of PET detectors at fault with a predetermined threshold.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is configured to deactivate a subset of the plurality of PET detectors based on the fault signal.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to stop a radiation therapy procedure within about 0.01 seconds after the fault signal is generated.
