TOPICAL USE OF LEVOFLOXACIN FOR REDUCING LUNG INFLAMMATION
The present invention relates to methods and compositions for the treatment of pulmonary inflammation. In particular, methods and compositions using aerosol levofloxacin or ofloxacin to reduce pulmonary inflammation are provided.
1 . A method for treating an acute or chronic inflammation of at least a portion of a respiratory tract in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject an aerosol of a solution comprising from about 90 mg/ml to about 110 mg/ml of levofloxacin and from about 190 mM to about 210 mM of a magnesium cation, a calcium cation, a zinc cation, a copper cation, an aluminum cation, or an iron cation; to treat the inflammation.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the solution comprises about 100 mg/ml of levofloxacin and about 200 mM of the magnesium cation.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the magnesium cation is in the form of magnesium chloride.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the solution has a pH from about 5 to about 8 and an osmolality from about 300 mOsmol/kg to about 500 mOsmol/kg.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the aerosol has a mass median aerodynamic diameter from about 2 microns to about 5 microns with a geometric standard deviation less than or equal to 2.5 microns

A method for treating a pulmonary inflammation in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject an aerosol of a solution comprising from about 90 mg/ml to about 110 mg/ml of levofloxacin and from about 190 mM to about 210 mM of a magnesium cation, a calcium cation, a zinc cation, a copper cation, an aluminum cation, or an iron cation; to treat the pulmonary inflammation.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the pulmonary inflammation is an acute or chronic inflammation of a lung.
8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the pulmonary inflammation is an acute or chronic inflammation of an upper airway,
9 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the solution comprises about 100 mg/ml of levofloxacin and about 200 mM of the magnesium cation.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the magnesium cation is in the form of magnesium chloride.
11 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the solution has a pH from about 5 to about 8 and an osmolality from about 300 mOsmol/kg to about 500 mOsmol/kg.

A method for treating a pulmonary inflammation in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising administering to the subject a solution comprising from about 90 mg/ml to about 110 mg/ml of levofloxacin and from about 190 mM to about 210 mM of a magnesium cation, a calcium cation, a zinc cation, a copper cation, an aluminum cation, or an iron cation; to treat the pulmonary inflammation; wherein the subject does not have a pulmonary bacterial infection.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the solution comprises about 100 mg/ml of levofloxacin and about 200 mM of the magnesium cation.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the magnesium cation is in the form of magnesium chloride.
15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the solution has a pH from about 5 to about 8 and an osmolality from about 300 mOsmol/kg to about 500 mOsmol/kg.
