Abstract

When mobile terminated devices sleep, the devices might not be reachable when needed, for instance when the device is a recipient of data from a third party server. As described herein, a third party application server may inform the network that it has data to send to a particular UE or group of UEs. In an example, the mobile core network (MCN) may use information from the third party server to ensure that the UE is awake when it needs to be. For example, a given UE or group of UEs can be prevented from entering a sleep state before a data transfer is completed.

Claims (26)

1. A method performed by an apparatus connected to a network, the method comprising:

receiving a first data delivery request message that indicates at least one user equipment (UE) that is to be a recipient of data during a data transfer from a third party server, wherein the first data delivery request message further indicates time window information for the data transfer; and

based on the first data delivery request message, performing an action to ensure that the at least one UE is prevented from entering a first sleep mode at a time when the third party server is scheduled to perform the data transfer, wherein paging occasions for the at least one UE are limited in the first sleep mode.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a virtualized network function.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first sleep mode is a Power Savings Mode (PSM) in which the at least one UE does not listen to for pages.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the action to ensure that the at least one UE is prevented from entering the PSM at the time when the third party server is scheduled to perform the data transfer comprises adjusting one of a tracking area update timer or an active timer.

The method of claim 3 , wherein the action to ensure that the at least one UE is prevented from entering the PSM at the time when the third party server is scheduled to perform the data transfer comprises rejecting a timer value that is proposed by the at least one UE during a tracking area update.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein the action to ensure that the at least one UE is prevented from entering the PSM at the time when the third party server is scheduled to perform the data transfer comprises sending the time window information to a mobility management function.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first sleep mode is an extended idle mode discontinuous reception (eDRX) feature.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the action to ensure that the at least one UE is prevented from using the eDRX feature at the time when the third party server is scheduled to perform the data transfer comprises informing the at least one UE that the eDRX feature is disabled.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the action to ensure that the at least one UE is prevented from using the eDRX feature at the time when the third party server is scheduled to perform the data transfer comprises sending the time window information to a mobility management function.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a mobility management function.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first data delivery request message is received from a subscriber server.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is a subscriber server.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first data delivery request message is received from an exposure function.

14. A method performed by an apparatus connected to a network, the method comprising:

receiving a first data delivery request message that indicates at least one user equipment (UE) that is to be a recipient of data during a data transfer from a third party server, wherein the first data delivery request message further indicates time window information for the data transfer; and

based on the first data delivery request message, performing an action to ensure that the at least one UE is prevented from releasing a radio resource control (RRC) Connection that is usable for the data transfer.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the apparatus is a virtualized network function.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the apparatus is a mobility management function.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first data delivery request message is received from a subscriber server.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the action to ensure that the at least one UE is prevented from releasing the RRC Connection that is usable for the data transfer comprises sending a message to a base station that identifies the at least one UE and provides time information.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the message instructs the base station to maintain the RRC connection for a duration indicated in the time window information.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the apparatus is a subscriber server.

21. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first data delivery request message is received from an exposure function.

22. The method of claim 14 , wherein the action to ensure that the at least one UE is prevented from releasing the RRC Connection that is usable for the data transfer comprises sending the time window information to a mobility management function.
