Abstract

A method of charging multiple receivers, the method includes: (i) receiving, via the communication radio, first data that allows the transmitter to determine a locations for a first receiver and a second receiver, (ii) determining waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the location of the first receiver, (iii) determining waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the location of the second receiver, (iv) causing a first subset of antennas to transmit wireless-power waves having the first waveform features to create focused energy at the location of the first receiver and (v) causing a second subset of antennas to transmit wireless-power waves having the second waveform features to create focused energy at the second location of the second receiver, where transmitting the wireless-power waves having the first waveform features occurs while transmitting the wireless-power waves having the second waveform features.

Claims (65)

1. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a wireless-power transmitter that includes a communication radio and an antenna array that is distinct from the communication radio, cause the wireless-power transmitter to:

receive, via the communication radio, first data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine a first location of a first wireless-power receiver and a second location of a second wireless-power receiver;

determine first waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the first location of the first wireless-power receiver;

determine second waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the second location of the second wireless-power receiver;

cause a first subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the first waveform features to create focused energy at the first location of the first wireless-power receiver; and

cause a second subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the second waveform features to create focused energy at the second location of the second wireless-power receiver, wherein transmitting the wireless-power waves having the first waveform features to create focused energy at the first location of the first wireless-power receiver occurs while transmitting the wireless-power waves having the second waveform features to create focused energy at the second location of the second wireless-power receiver.

2. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors of a wireless-power transmitter, also cause the wireless-power transmitter to:

receive, via the communication radio, second data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine that the first wireless-power receiver has moved from the first location to a third location, distinct from the first location and the second location:

determine third waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the third location of the first wireless-power receiver;

cause a subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the third waveform features to create focused energy at the third location of the first wireless-power receiver.

3. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 2 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors of a wireless-power transmitter, also cause the wireless-power transmitter to:

receive, via the communication radio, third data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine that the second wireless-power receiver has moved from the second location to a fourth location, distinct from the first location, second location and third location;

determine fourth waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the fourth location of the second wireless-power receiver;

cause a subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the fourth waveform features to create focused energy at the fourth location of the first wireless-power receiver.

4. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors of a wireless-power transmitter, also cause the wireless-power transmitter to:

receive, via the communication radio, third data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine a third location of a third wireless-power receiver

determine third waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the third location of the third wireless-power receiver;

cause a third subset of antennas, distinct from the first and second subsets of antennas, of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the third waveform features to create focused energy at the third location of the third wireless-power receiver.

5. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 4 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors of a wireless-power transmitter, cause the wireless-power transmitter to:

receive, via the communication radio, additional data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine that the third wireless-power receiver has moved from the third location to a fourth location, distinct from the first location, second location, and third location:

determine fourth waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the fourth location of the third wireless-power receiver;

cause a subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the fourth waveform features to create focused energy at the fourth location of the third wireless-power receiver.

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the antenna array is integrated with a light source, and the light source is configured to emit light while wireless power waves are transmitted to the first wireless-power receiver at the first location and the second wireless-power receiver at the second location.

7. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the antenna array is integrated with a ceiling-mounted structure.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the first subset of antennas and the second subset of antennas are different subsets of antennas of the antenna array.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the wireless power waves are transmitted in a radio frequency (RF) band.

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein the focused energy at the first location and the focused energy at the second location allows the first wireless-power receiver and the second wireless-power receiver to, respectively, harvest more than one watt of usable power.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors of the wireless-power transmitter, cause the wireless-power transmitter to:

adjust the first waveform features and the second waveform features to ensure compliance with electromagnetic field exposure protection standards.

12. A method of charging multiple wireless-power receivers, the method comprising:

at a wireless-power transmitter, that includes a communication radio and an antenna array that is distinct from the communication radio:

receiving, via the communication radio, first data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine a first location for a first wireless-power receiver and a second location for a second wireless-power receiver;

determining first waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the first location of the first wireless-power receiver;

determining second waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the second location of the second wireless-power receiver;

causing a first subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the first waveform features to create focused energy at the first location of the first wireless-power receiver; and

causing a second subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the second waveform features to create focused energy at the second location of the second wireless-power receiver, wherein transmitting the wireless-power waves having the first waveform features to create focused energy at the first location of the first wireless-power receiver occurs while transmitting the wireless-power waves having the second waveform features to create focused energy at the second location of the second wireless-power receiver.

13. A wireless-power transmitter, comprising:

a communication radio;

an antenna array that is distinct from the communication radio;

at least one processor;

memory storing one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for:

receiving, via the communication radio, first data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine a first location for a first wireless-power receiver and a second location for a second wireless-power receiver;

determining first waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the first location of the first wireless-power receiver;

determining second waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the second location of the second wireless-power receiver;

causing a first subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the first waveform features to create focused energy at the first location of the first wireless-power receiver; and

causing a second subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the second waveform features to create focused energy at the second location of the second wireless-power receiver, wherein transmitting the wireless-power waves having the first waveform features to create focused energy at the first location of the first wireless-power receiver occurs while transmitting the wireless-power waves having the second waveform features to create focused energy at the second location of the second wireless-power receiver.

14. The wireless-power transmitter of claim 13 , wherein the one or more programs also include instructions for:

receiving, via the communication radio, second data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine that the first wireless-power receiver has moved from the first location to a third location, distinct from the first location and the second location:

determining third waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the third location of the first wireless-power receiver;

causing a subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the third waveform features to create focused energy at the third location of the first wireless-power receiver.

15. The wireless-power transmitter of claim 14 , wherein the one or more programs also include instructions for:

receiving, via the communication radio, third data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine that the second wireless-power receiver has moved from the second location to a fourth location, distinct from the first location, second location and third location;

determining fourth waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the fourth location of the second wireless-power receiver;

causing a subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the fourth waveform features to create focused energy at the fourth location of the first wireless-power receiver.

16. The wireless-power transmitter of claim 13 , wherein the one or more programs also include instructions for:

receiving, via the communication radio, third data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine a third location of a third wireless-power receiver

determining third waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the third location of the third wireless-power receiver;

causing a third subset of antennas, distinct from the first and second subsets of antennas, of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the third waveform features to create focused energy at the third location of the third wireless-power receiver.

17. The wireless-power transmitter of claim 16 , wherein the one or more programs also include instructions for:

receiving, via the communication radio, additional data that allows the wireless-power transmitter to determine that the third wireless-power receiver has moved from the third location to a fourth location, distinct from the first location, second location, and third location:

determining fourth waveform features used to transmit wireless power waves focused at the fourth location of the third wireless-power receiver;

causing a subset of antennas of the antenna array to transmit wireless-power waves having the fourth waveform features to create focused energy at the fourth location of the third wireless-power receiver.

The wireless-power transmitter of claim 13 , wherein the antenna array is integrated with a light source, and the light source is configured to emit light while wireless power waves are transmitted to the first wireless-power receiver at the first location and the second wireless-power receiver at the second location.

19. The wireless-power transmitter of claim 13 , wherein the focused energy at the first location and the focused energy at the second location allows the first wireless-power receiver and the second wireless-power receiver to, respectively, harvest more than one watt of usable power.

20. The wireless-power transmitter of claim 13 , wherein the wireless power waves are transmitted in a radio frequency (RF) band.
